I’ll use [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] for a future girl.
It sounds positively feminine to my ears but it’s a solid unisex choice for most.
If [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is what you like then use it.
Also,[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]Harley[/name_u] is great.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] seems perfectly unisex to me, especially with the boyish nickname Phoen/[name_u]Finn[/name_u]. I do prefer [name_m]Felix[/name_m] though, if that’s an option.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is a difficult one I spent a long time thinking about too. Technically it’s my second favourite name, and I was set on using [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] someday, but I decided against it for the reasons @tfzolghadr mentioned. That wasn’t the only reason I let [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] go (he was actually too popular for me), but it was a significant contribution.
That being said, I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is perfectly usable for boys, as well as girls. I think it’s a strong name as you mentioned, but has an element of softness and a wonderful image that doesn’t always come across in boys’ names. I’m not too familiar with the Australian popularity lists, but I know in the US and UK it sits pretty well in unusual but familiar territory.
As for nicknames, I absolutely love Phin/[name_u]Finn[/name_u]. I know some find it a stretch, but out loud it definitely works in my opinion. I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]Harley[/name_u] is a great combo, [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] would be lovely too.
I think it’s usable, strong, unique, and the imagery is great. This name is all boy to me, I’ve never heard it on a girl. [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]Harley[/name_u] is a little much for me, but [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is perfect!!

I appreciate the comments above. However, to me, [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] sounds like a boy/unisex name, and I considered it for my son. It doesn’t feel feminine at all, but then again that is just my context (I get that it may be different in, for example, [name_f]China[/name_f].) I think it is very useable on a boy living in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u].
I’ve never met a female [name_m]Pheonix[/name_m] but would mind it on either sex
I love [name_u]Finn[/name_u] or [name_u]Niko[/name_u] as nicknames
[name_m]Pheonix[/name_m] [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] would be great
[name_f]May[/name_f] also suggest [name_m]Harland[/name_m] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] “[name_u]Harley[/name_u]”
I love [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], especially on a boy. It has minimal usage here and the usage it does have is usually on boys, so I think it leans more towards a boy name. I also like [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]Harley[/name_u]!
I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is firmly unisex. It’s one of the few names where I would have no suppositions about the sex of the bearer. I love it on a boy and think it’s totally usable!
I got a mix of opinions and replies, which is great, thank you all so much!
I do prefer [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u], but my number one name right now is [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Rodney[/name_m], and I don’t want to use it twice (not that I’m pregnant, just a name fanatic!). I also really like the nickname “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]”, I think it makes the name a little more masculine.
I’m so surprised by some of these responses! I have never heard of [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] being used as a girl’s name.
I went to school with a male [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and I taught a male [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. I think it works well with currently popular names and never seemed weird to me.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] sounds so cute.
My cousins name is [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and it fits her perfectly.
Might not want it if you live in arizona though.
I love [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]!
To me it is definitely a boy name.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is 100% boy to me, I live in the US. I personally wouldn’t use it but it’s definitely usable. [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is handsome.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] sounds more to the masculine side to me, though I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a girl [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. I much prefer it on a boy though.
It is an awkward one to give a middle name though. I’d just choose significant over flow, as flow doesnt matter that much. [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] does sound amazing though
For me [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] sounds masculine (I’m in upstate [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m] in the US). [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is a more masculine nickname even if it’s not as intuitive as [name_u]Fee[/name_u]/Phee or [name_f]Nix[/name_f], both of which sound more feminine to me.
The only [name_u]Harley[/name_u] I know is a girl so if you are using unisex [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] as a first, I say go for a very masculine middle.
