Delilah

I suppose this is a more family/political question but I’d be very grateful for any thoughts. I adore this name and desperately want it for my girl’s name BUT… my mother in law claims it will start an enormous family row as her half sister has called her child [name]Delilah[/name] (child is now 12ish) and that name now ‘belongs’ to her. I actually rather suspect she just doesn’t like the name much and is throwing obstacles in my path!

I can’t really ask the mother’s permission because she’s the type to raise an objection purely because she’s been asked. I’m rather gutted to have to lose out on my favourite name just because someone we never see and never have contact with might throw a hissy fit.

But… am I wrong? [name]Do[/name] you feel it is wrong for me to call the baby the same name as my husbands (half) cousin?

I think that’s ridiculous… it isn’t even a close family member (ie; baby-to-be’s first cousin) and you are probably right that your [name]MIL[/name] might not be fond of it and is just deterring you. [name]Delilah[/name] is an awesome name and you should use it if you love it. If her half sister has a problem, let her look like the child when she makes a fuss. Chances are, the 12 year old would get a kick out of a new baby sharing her name.

[name]Hi[/name] there! I’m with CardiganGirl (cute name!) on this , but this one’s totally up to you.

  1. [name]Do[/name] you care if this petty half-cousin never speaks to you again and goes completely bonkers as a result of you naming your little girl [name]Delilah[/name]?

  2. [name]Do[/name] you care if your mother-in-law becomes angry with you upon learning that you’ve “stolen” the name from your, uh, not-so-balanced half-cousin?

  3. [name]Do[/name] you care that you may possibly end up seeing less of both your delightful half-cousin and your mother-in-law if you use [name]Delilah[/name]?

  4. If you answered “No” to the above, I think you should totally use [name]Delilah[/name]!

Good luck!

Oh brilliant. Thank you so much all of you. I was hoping I wasn’t mad in thinking this unreasonable! I really don’t care about the mother being miffed and I’m sure my mother in law was just trying to guide me away from a name she wasn’t wild about and putting a political spin on it.

She’ll have to be a bold little girl to carry off [name]Delilah[/name] but I do love it.

Thank you again, immensely.

I don’t know your family, of course, but I think a husband’s half cousin is so distant, there’s nothing wrong with it. [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] is lovely, so I would say use it unless it would cause to much strife

I’d say go for it! The MIL is being ridiculous. [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] is a very pretty name, I even have [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] on my own list.
