Delilah

People’s honest opinions on name [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] with Nn [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] for [name_m]Archie[/name_m]'s sister! Surname is [name_m]Williams[/name_m]! I love the sound of [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] but not sure i actually like the look of it written down? I want something not really heard of but not too weird! [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is looking at 2nd choice…

Some people have very strong opinions about the name-- I’m not one of them. The biblical allusion doesn’t bother me at all, but it always bring to mind that song by the Plain White Ts which then gets stuck in my head for like the next six hours.

I think it’s a lovely name and I love [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] as a nn. I’m in love with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] too.

I personally do not like the name. I’m sure you will meet some that don’t know that [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] was a {lets say} not so honorable girl in the Bible… but that doesn’t make up for the population on the world who does know the meaning of the name. I personally wouldn’t put that on my child even if it doesn’t personally bother me (because you don’t know how she will feel later on in life) but hey you can do whatever you like

I think you could use [name_f]Lilah[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], or [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] on it’s own though… [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is pretty too! GL

I like the melodic double l’s, and I’m fond of [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Leila[/name_f], [name_f]Kelilah[/name_f]*, [name_f]Laurel[/name_f], [name_f]Lilac[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], etc. - sorry I’ll stop now - but I just can’t bring myself to like [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], it’s got a lot of cultural baggage for me and seems like a strange choice to put on a little girl. I’d actually understand taking that as one’s own name, but not giving it to a daughter.

I do like [name_f]Delia[/name_f] and [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] though.

And I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f], it’s beautiful.

*Doesn’t rhyme with [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]. It has a lee-la sound in it.

I absolutely love the name [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]… I think it’s pretty, unique and has a solid history as it is an older name.

I also like the name [name_f]Luna[/name_f] but not as much as I like the name [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]

[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] is beautiful! Also, my dog’s name is [name_f]Lila[/name_f], named after a best friend growing up, so I have good feelings towards the name, however you choose to spell it! [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is always on the top list for me

I’m one of those who have issues with the Biblical connotations. However, a bigger issue for me is that flippin’ song! I know a little [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] and I sing it every single time. Needless to say her mother is not amused. I also sing Come on [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] to my friend [name_f]Eileen[/name_f] too, so maybe it’s just me.

I have no idea who she was or what the biblical meaning is? Could someone tell me? Everytime I look for means I just get “queen of the night” of “long hair” ?!

In the Old Testament, [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] cuts [name_m]Samson[/name_m]'s hair, thus draining him of his strength and betraying his trust, for money. She is regarded as a temptress.

On a separate note, I wouldn’t let the Biblical thing bother you (unless of course you’re religious). Names like [name_f]Jezebel[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] and [name_f]Lillith[/name_f] are used, and they have far worse connotations.

I am not particularly religious… And if I’m honest that’s not as bad as I thought there could be a lot worse meanings? Is it just me who thinks this!

I’d argue that two of those don’t.

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f], as far as I understand (I’m not [name_m]Christian[/name_m]) reformed, was saved, was a friend/follower of [name_m]Jesus[/name_m]? [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] didn’t repent or change or have any positive growth? [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] certainly doesn’t reference someone who betrayed her own husband to be tortured, imprisoned, and blinded?

And [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is loaded but at least mult-faceted - the folklore surrounding her is that she was [name_m]Adam[/name_m]'s first wife and wanted to be his equal, i.e. would not submit to him. [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] wasn’t strong, she was just bought.

Respectfully, I guess I don’t see those as the same at all. But I think [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] is the most popular of all of them in the US so maybe it bothers me more than many people. I’m not trying to attack anyone.

I love the name [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] for its beauty, but for people who are religious, it has very, very negative connotations. ‘Temptress’ is the PC way of putting it. Seductress. Vamp. Worse. By ‘queen of the night’ they must mean ‘lady of the night’, if ya know what I mean. And [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is such a lovely name on its own that doesn’t carry all that weight.

You could always defend the name by pointing out that every biblical character is a tool unto God’s purpose regardless of the role they play, but why choose a name you have to defend in the first place? It’s right up there with [name_m]Cain[/name_m], [name_f]Jezebel[/name_f] and [name_m]Judas[/name_m] on the list of ‘just don’t’ names to me.

Sorry! [name_m]Just[/name_m] want to be honest because I know when I have mentioned liking it my family members and friends reacted very strongly and negatively, and I think the child would have a lot to overcome in terms of first impressions.

As far as I know the name Lillith doesn’t appear in the Bible and Magdelena refers to Mary of Magdelane, a follower of Christ, so not at all the same thing.

Dahlia is similar and pretty.

I love [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], it’s pretty and feminine and the nn [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] is beautiful! I honestly don’t care about any negative religious associations. Lots of names have bad connotations to lots of people, but if you like them, then that’s all that matters! My sister’s bf’s son is called [name_m]Cain[/name_m] (though I believe it’s spelled differently), and he’s a lovely boy and I do not immediately think of “[name_m]Cain[/name_m] and [name_m]Abel[/name_m]” when I hear his name. I would also use other so-called “bad” names from the Bible, though many are not my style. If you love the name, then use it, it is your choice and no-one else’s!
