Delores and Desirée

I haven’t seen much of these two names on nameberry. I accept I could just be missing them.
Usually shortened to Del and Des, they are worth fond reflection. ‘Dolly’ is a great short version of Delores. They were popular in my grandmother’s era.
Berries any thoughts?

I know a Delores/Dolores who is probably in her early twenties now! I’ve always liked it because of her. But I much prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f] to the other nns you mentioned… [name_f]Desirée[/name_f] doesn’t do much for me though—I prefer [name_f]Renée[/name_f], [name_f]Esmée[/name_f], [name_f]Marée[/name_f], etc.,

Mmm [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is delightful. A pretty nickname/short version makes a difference. [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] evokes images of young women around the forties with lots of curly hair and dancing the jitterbug. It’s probably from the music “Hello Dolly.”

[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] doesn’t really appeal to me sound-wise. [name_f]Desiree[/name_f] sounds nice but all I see is desire which feels too sexy. Actually [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] makes me think of pain :joy: due to Spanish.

I love Dolores - I think it’s really romantic and due to a comeback soon! Plus the nickname Dolly is adorable. Delores, on the other hand, eeh. I really dislike that spelling, if I’m being honest.

Desiree is alright. It feels quite dated to me, though I can appreciate its history, like the namesake of Desiree Clary. I think it might have a revival someday, but not in the next 10 years.

I had to google @hellobanjo. No Spanish… got it now

[name_f]My[/name_f] teacher was [name_u]Del[/name_u] - [name_f]Delores[/name_f]: must have been where I started to use the variant spelling.
Behind the Name-
[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] Means “sorrows”, from the Spanish title of the Virgin [Mary] [name_f]María[/name_f] de los Dolores*, meaning “Mary of Sorrows”

This reminds me of [name_f]Deidre[/name_f].

I think both are very pretty! [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] could also be shortened to [name_f]Lola[/name_f] or [name_f]Dot[/name_f] as well!

delores is nice, but i prefer dolores, especially nn lola. lolita would be even better if not for the unfortunate connection. desiree isn’t really my thing.

I really like Delores/Dolores! I prefer the second spelling, but either way it sounds so elegant and pretty. I don’t like [name_f]Desiree[/name_f] as much, it still feels pretty dated to me.

I really love [name_f]Desiree[/name_f]! So cool and bright!! [name_f]Delores[/name_f] is a bit clunky and reminds me of the HP character but it’s not bad

I really like [name_f]Delores[/name_f] but don’t think I’d ever use. [name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f] would be my favoured nicknames - which is odd because I really don’t like [name_f]Lola[/name_f] in its own right but find it cute as a nn for [name_f]Delores[/name_f]. I’m really not keen on [name_f]Desirée[/name_f], it just isn’t my taste.

[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] is still too old fashioned for me but I did like the character in Encanto so I think the name could see a surge from the movie. I much prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f] myself.

[name_f]Desiree[/name_f] was popular enough when I was younger that I associate it heavily with the 90s so it feels dated to me.
