Dempsey for a girl?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all! Wondering what your thoughts are for using [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] as a girl?
The last name is two syllables and starts with an “E.” I know that it is a super masculine-sounding name but I tend to like uni-sex/traditionally boy names for girls such as [name_u]James[/name_u] etc. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that it could work for a girl/ Maybe if used with a feminine middle name like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]? [name_m]Just[/name_m] want to hear your thoughts on [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m]! And if you think there are any nickname options?

Hello,

I don’t think the name sounds too masculine at all, I have never even heard it before. To me it sounds unisex, as do a lot of names ending in “ey”
I personally don’t really like the name, I suppose it reminds me too much of the word “dump” but in regards to your question, it wouldn’t be too masculine to use at all in my opinion.

I quite like it. It’s a surname so traditionally used for boys but it’s cute on a girl. I like surname names on girls! I’d definitely pair her with something obviously feminine though.

I like unisex names, but this one doesn’t feel super unisex to me. My first thought is [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m], so I automatically think ‘boy,’ but it could probably work for a girl, too. I would definite pair it with something distinctly feminine.

I’m honestly not a huge fan. It does sound very masculine to me, and masculine names for girls are not really my style. BUT, if that’s your style, there’s no reason you can’t use it! A classic, feminine middle name might provide a nice contrast.

The only nickname I can think of is [name_f]Demi[/name_f], which could be cute.

I find it quite appealing. As a surname it’s a unisex name and not a boy’s name in the same way that [name_u]James[/name_u] is. Possible nns: [name_f]Demi[/name_f], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f].

I think it could definitely work.

There are so many traditionally-masculine-surname-type-given-names being used on girls nowadays, I would honestly not automatically assume Dempsey to be a boy anyway. Also, I don’t necessarily think you need to pair it with an ultra-feminine type name either, unless of course you love one just as much. Rather, use names of your own style and what you love (based on your signature you seem to prefer more unisex type names in general?) because ultimately, middles are (generally) rarely used/known anyway, so using a feminine name because ‘it balances things out’ may not end up doing so after all. I actually think that Dempsey Harper would make for quite a nice combo.

Finally, I also think that Demi would make a great nickname for Dempsey - sweet, but spunky.

To me the name doesn’t sound appealing at all… I hear “dump” or “dumpy.” Or I could see it on a pet.
In terms of masculine or feminine, to me it doesn’t sound distinctly either way.
