DH and I keep going back and forth, and the kiddo will be traveling home in the spring. He loves [name]Desmond[/name] (the only name he really cares about at all); I prefer [name]Colm[/name].
[name]Desmond[/name] means “man from Munster” (the province in [name]Ireland[/name] my mother and DH’s great-grandfather are from); while [name]Colm[/name] means “dove” (peace). I guess mostly I’m just sad that [name]Desmond[/name] doesn’t have a better meaning, even though it does have toally awesome namesake [name]Desmond[/name] Tutu…what do you think, should meaning trump a name my DH actually gives a crap about?
I guess I should also say that our last name is [name]Connor[/name]…i do wnder about the aliteration of [name]Colm[/name] [name]Connor[/name]??? Too much?
Hmm. I find [name]Colm[/name] sort of clunky and hard to say, although it has its appeal. Maybe the name’s clunkiness/difficulty wouldn’t be a problem where you live though?
I really like the name [name]Desmond[/name]. Its meaning is kind of nice given the family connection. Besides [name]Desmond[/name] Tutu there’s the musician [name]Desmond[/name] Dekker who was pretty cool. With your adopting, as I notice in your tag, I think it’s kind of cool that this Irish name has taken on such international, multi-cultural use. That shouldn’t dictate your naming at all, don’t get me wrong, I just think it’s a nice added fact.
I think [name]Colm[/name] [name]Connor[/name] is alliteration that works.
Is [name]Colm[/name] related to [name]Callum[/name]? I find [name]Callum[/name] easier to say and it has more sound similarity to [name]Desmond[/name], maybe your husband would like it more?
[name]Colm[/name] [name]Desmond[/name], [name]Desmond[/name] [name]Colm[/name], [name]Callum[/name] [name]Desmond[/name], [name]Desmond[/name] [name]Callum[/name], all have nice rhythms. I think you have some combos to work with here.
Thanks for the feedback! I have thought about putting them together, but we are hoping to keep his Korea name as a mn; so not sure if we want to do the two mn thing or just leave it as is.
[name]Colm[/name] is pronounced Co-lum…much like [name]Callum[/name]. I think I’ll have to concede to DH on this, because he actually cares and loves [name]Desmond[/name]; and normally, he doesn’t care much about names at all. Plus, [name]Desmond[/name] has awesome nn’s like [name]Des[/name], Dezzy, etc.
I would definitely vote for [name]Colm[/name] ahead of [name]Desmond[/name] any day of the week!
I can’t see anything appealing about [name]Desmond[/name], it’s a middle aged man’s name [name]IMO[/name] and not a very nice one. It’s clunky, old fashioned and to be honest I’d be embarrassed if my name was [name]Desmond[/name]. I don’t want this to sound harsh but people would laugh if I were to introduce my baby or son as [name]Desmond[/name].
[name]Colm[/name], [name]Finn[/name], [name]Hugo[/name] and [name]Milo[/name] are all much better options!
Really?! Totally not offended or all…that’s your opinion, but I know of three other little boys named [name]Desmond[/name] right now. Plus, it’s one of the most popular names in [name]Ireland[/name] right now. I think it’s so interesting, though, how much people’s opinions differ.
I like [name]Colm[/name] and its meaning the best but I think [name]Desmond[/name] flows better with your surname
I reckon regional differences have something to do with the varying opinions- I’m assuming you’re in the US or [name]Canada[/name]? In the UK [name]Desmond[/name] is seen as a very old fashioned name much like [name]Ronald[/name] or [name]Barbara[/name]- you’d be hard-pushed to find a baby [name]Desmond[/name] over here. But I know names like [name]Desmond[/name] are becoming a lot more popular in other countries. It’s vice versa with the US too- [name]Alfie[/name] is something like #4 here but nowhere to be seen in the US top 1000! Which is why I love NB and all the differences & trends!
All in all [name]Desmond[/name] is a nice name and I’d quite like to meet a young [name]Des[/name] or Dezzy
[name]Ah[/name], yes you’re probably right! So true…nobody would choose [name]Alfie[/name] here in the US (although I think it’s cute); but I do know it’s popular across the pond. And all the other little Desmonds I know are here in US and [name]Canada[/name]. Thanks for your input!
I am in the US and [name]Desmond[/name] is my fvorite boys name apart from my son’s name ([name]Felix[/name]). In fact we went back and forth over [name]Felix[/name] vs. [name]Desmond[/name]. The nn options are fabulous! I love the connection to family.
I don’t personally care for [name]Colm[/name] and would not know how to pronounce it if you had not just spelled it out for us - so pronunciation issues int he US will likely be an issue.
I do think it is important to consider how much your husband loves the name - he is usually not so into names, but he loves this one. [name]How[/name] nice will it be for him to have that connection?
I love [name]Colm[/name] (and especially [name]Colm[/name] [name]Wilkinson[/name]) but I vote for [name]Desmond[/name]. I think it flows better with your last name. [name]Desmond[/name] is fantastic!
I agree with previous posts that combining the two names would be great. I love the idea of keeping his Korean name as his middle.People fr church who adopted girls from [name]China[/name] all have American first names and they kept their birth names as their middle names. It was very sweet.
I prefer [name]Desmond[/name], both on its own and with your last name. (I don’t dislike [name]Colm[/name], but I do think of “column” and I suspect more people in the US are apt to say the name like [name]Cole[/name] with an M on the end.) [name]Desmond[/name] [name]Colm[/name] flows really well, and two middles would be just fine!
