Desperately Crushing on Aethelred

Hello everyone!
I’ve had the name [name_m]Ethelred[/name_m] - and then [name_m]Aethelred[/name_m] - in my mind all day and I absolutely adore it. I’m not in an actual naming-a-human-child situation, don’t worry, but I can’t get the idea of a little [name_m]Aethelred[/name_m] out of my head.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any thoughts/desperate attempts to talk me down from the ledge?

Aethelred sounds like a prescription drug for me, so in order to get you off the baby craze just imagine a little girl with a twin sister named Melatonin :joy:

Reminds me a lot of Anglo-[name_u]Saxon[/name_u] history… can’t say it’s my favorite name from that time period but definitely unique.

I like it a lot better than a lot of other long boys names.

Red would be a cute nickname!

I agree!

[name_m]Aethelred[/name_m] is definitely too much for me, but maybe Anglo-[name_u]Saxon[/name_u] is the next wave of hipster retro-revival names? They must be due a comeback by now!

I actually think it’s kind of cool, but it doesn’t feel very usable at the moment.

I would say it is “too” distinctive on an actual-human-child, as you say, but there’s an airy quality to it despite it being long-ish and complex. I find it a bit similar to [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], which is not my kind of female name, so that puts me off ever so slightly.

Aethelred is a bit fussy for me but i quite enjoy the sound and look of [name_m]Ethelred[/name_m]! It reminds me of Cenred which i enjoy

The kings aethelreds that we had were not the best people in history so aethelred unred (wise council not councilled) has ruined this name for me. But I do have a soft spot for Anglo-[name_u]Saxon[/name_u] names like [name_m]Leofric[/name_m], Uhtred, Aethelflaed, Eanflaed and Coenwulf - helped no less by the last kingdom series (books and Netflix)

I love [name_m]Aethelred[/name_m]! I’d spell it [name_m]Ethelred[/name_m] though.

I knew an Aelfgifu in real life, mostly people called her [name_f]Elf[/name_f]. I thought it was a stunning name and [name_f]Elfrida[/name_f] is one of my favourite names. I am not being much use because I think Anglo [name_u]Saxon[/name_u] names are totally usable!

I have adored Aelswith for a while, so I get where you are coming from!

I think it’s actually a pretty cool name! However, I do think it’s more suited to a guilty pleasure list than an actual baby. Sorry.

There’s a great character on Vikings called Athelstan, which this reminded me of. I have to say, I think [name_m]Aethelred[/name_m] sounds much better on my ears.

While definitely “out there” until Anglo-[name_u]Saxon[/name_u] makes a comeback (if anyone can spur that, the Berries can!), I agree that [name_u]Red[/name_u] is a wonderful (and useable) nickname.

Glad to know I am not the only one that likes the name! I also like Athelstan.

Oh gosh, if you remove a couple letters from this name it spells my surname :joy:
