Desperately in need of last minute girl name!

I am scheduled to deliver my boy/girl twins in less than 48 hours. DH and I have chosen the name [name_u]Grady[/name_u] for the boy but cannot agree on a girl name to save our lives.

At one point, we were both in love with the name [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]. However, I have moved on from the name and he has not. I mean, he is in looove with the name. However I’m afraid it might not carry into adulthood as a “grownup” or “real” name and worry it could hinder her down the road, though with changes in naming trends maybe I’m more concerned about that than I should be? I also dislike how close it is to the #1 most common name of [name_f]Emma[/name_f], which is beautiful but entirely too popular for my taste, along with the other “[name_f]Em[/name_f]” makes that are so popular right now and I can only assume will result in many Emmys in practice if not on birth certificates. Some may suggest an “[name_f]Em[/name_f]” name that could be shortened to [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] but our preference is to name our children exactly what they will go by, plus I’m not in love with any of the [name_f]Em[/name_f] names I’ve come across. The “[name_f]Em[/name_f]” trend is just rubbing me the wrong way at this point.

Another name we both really like and had all but settled on at one point is [name_f]Kyla[/name_f]. However, I got cold feet on the name recently as I started realizing how often she would be called [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] which I’m afraid would drive me nuts. Also, even though [name_f]Kyla[/name_f] has never been a popular name, I fear the name would “feel” dated down the road right along with the name [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] (another reason I try to avoid popular or trendy names, so when my kids are older people won’t say “oh ok so he/she must have been born in ____ decade.”) So that started to scare me away from [name_f]Kyla[/name_f] at which point my husband leapt back in with his [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] obsession. Maybe I was too quick to move away from [name_f]Kyla[/name_f]? (We also considered [name_f]Isla[/name_f] but I know the pronunciation will be butchered and it’s gotten too trendy, and we considered [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] but it’s too similar to our older daughter’s name and has also gotten a little trendy.)

Another name we both adore but have moved away from is [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. We both love he simplicity, beauty, and “chic-ness” of it, but I’ve started to feel it seems a bit “chopped off” and easily misheard (“what was that?”), and I’m also convinced it will be pronounced [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] all the time which bothers me.

As a last minute alternative, I’ve thrown out the name [name_u]Raven[/name_u] which I love (I think, unless it’s my desperation talking), as it’s a combination of my name and DH ([name_f]Rachel[/name_f] and [name_m]Steven[/name_m]), pretty yet strong, easy to spell/pronounce, and uncommon but not too weird. DH is open to it as a middle name (i.e. [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_u]Raven[/name_u]) but doesn’t care for it as a first name at this point unless I’m able to talk him into it. We do all have dark hair so it would probably “fit.”

I feel like we need to go back to the drawing board but I’m now on my third time through the baby name book and constantly searching for names online so I’m getting a little hopeless that I will find anything new we have overlooked. Any suggestions on names or where I might draw inspiration? :-?

Or am I being overly concerned about the name [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] since I can’t come up with anything better and should I just go with it since I do at least like the sound of it and my husband adores it so much? [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_u]Raven[/name_u]? (Originally it was [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] but I fear [name_u]Rae[/name_u] doesn’t give her enough of a name to fall back on if she one day decides [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is too juvenile.) If we do go with [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], any suggestions on whether [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] feel like more of a “complete” name/less nicknames? Some may suggest [name_f]Emme[/name_f] which looks nice but I could not handle her name being read as “[name_f]Em[/name_f]” all the time.

If it helps, in addition to her twin brother [name_u]Grady[/name_u] will be older siblings [name_u]Dallas[/name_u] and Lahna. Help!!

Well, [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is in our top 3 so I’m biased. I agree that I also don’t like any other longer “em” names. [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] to me is sweet but classy.
[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_u]Raven[/name_u] makes it more “funky”

Instead of [name_f]Elle[/name_f] maybe [name_f]Belle[/name_f]? I also agree that [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is lovely but not so keen on [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

[name_u]Dallas[/name_u], Lahna, [name_u]Grady[/name_u], and [name_f]Maven[/name_f]?

I’ve been eye-ing [name_f]Maven[/name_f] today, so I’m putting it out there. Plus, I’m not sure how attached you are to [name_u]Raven[/name_u]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Grady[/name_u] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Maven[/name_f]?

I like [name_u]Raven[/name_u] and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f].

Maybe try [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] for a few days after she is born before you make it official?

If your partner doesn’t like [name_u]Raven[/name_u], what about [name_f]Ravenna[/name_f]

All the best with your beautiful twins.

I think [name_f]Dawn[/name_f] or Gwenny!

I like [name_u]Raven[/name_u]. There’s also [name_f]Ravenna[/name_f].

What about [name_u]Ember[/name_u] which can be shortened to [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]?

My niece’s name is [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], we both really like [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] but I’m worried that too could be shortened to [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is a great name, and you’re probably overthinking it. My sister in law is an [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] within our family, but professionally she’s just [name_f]Em[/name_f].

Out of all the names you listed, [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is by far my favorite. To me it seems the most wearable as it is a name that will grow with her. It’s just so timeless and classic, but is one of those names that will never feel dated. I have a friend named [name_f]Elle[/name_f], and the “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” thing has never been an issue! She just introduces herself as [name_f]Elle[/name_f], and after saying “No, just [name_f]Elle[/name_f]” once in a new environment she never seems to have issues with people calling her anything else.

Go with:
[name_u]Grady[/name_u] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f]

Thry sound great together.
Call her [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] for short.

I like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_u]Raven[/name_u].

But it’s difficult if you dislike all of the em- names. My own favorite of those is [name_f]Emmeleia[/name_f]. I also really like the [name_u]Ember[/name_u] suggestion, but I get that you don’t want another name that you can shorten to [name_f]Emmy[/name_f].

I can’t tell if you have last minute cold feet or if you truly don’t want [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], which makes it hard to comment.

[name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] are probably just as trendy as the em- names right now. Oh, and so is [name_f]Kyla[/name_f]/[name_f]Kayla[/name_f]/[name_f]Kaylie[/name_f] etc. This name I believe will sound dated in the future. I don’t think [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] or [name_f]Elle[/name_f] will.

My cousin is named [name_f]Emily[/name_f], and has always gone by [name_f]Emmy[/name_f].

I also like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] [name_u]Raven[/name_u].

Best of luck!

Some thoughts:

I know you’re not crazy about using a nickname, but what about choosing a first name beginning w/M & a middle name beginning w/E? M-E could be [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] for a nickname while she’s growing up & she’d have the option of using something completely different as she got older. Something like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but more off the beaten path…

[name_f]Maia[/name_f] [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Marin[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Meryl[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
etc.

In the similar-to category for [name_f]Kyla[/name_f] would be [name_f]Kyra[/name_f]/[name_f]Kira[/name_f]/[name_f]Keira[/name_f]…the first two especially don’t seem like they’re tied to any particular decade.

From your other children’s names, it seems like you like two-syllable, not-popular, not-way-out-there, easy-to-pronounce names. Maybe:

[name_u]Dallas[/name_u], Lahna, [name_u]Grady[/name_u], &…

[name_f]Rayna[/name_f]/[name_f]Raina[/name_f]/[name_f]Reyna[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_u]Ren[/name_u]ée
[name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_u]Malin[/name_u]
[name_f]Marin[/name_f]/[name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Tara[/name_f]/[name_f]Terra[/name_f]
[name_f]Cara[/name_f]/[name_f]Kara[/name_f]
[name_f]Maia[/name_f] ([name_f]MAY[/name_f]-ah)/[name_f]Maya[/name_f] (MY-ah)
[name_f]Brenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Catrin[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]

Good luck!

[name_f]Jade[/name_f]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Hallie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]

Could you spell [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] this way “[name_f]Emme[/name_f]” so as she gets older if it doesn’t translate you can call her [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and it still works with the spelling? Also [name_f]Amy[/name_f] is very close to [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], do you like that any better? It means “beloved”
which is rather lovely I think. [name_u]Grady[/name_u] and [name_f]Amy[/name_f]. They sound similar but not the same. A nice twin pairing with their similarities but enough differences to make each an individual.
