Desperately looking for names

Hey, guys.
So, you see me often around here, I know. Well, I don’t really need to explain, but I want to because I never know how to start a thread, so…
I have so many ideas, that’s why I’m always here. Also, I can’t decide about the names, I’m always changing, so I came here because I think I can stick better to other people’s opinions.
Well, continuing. I’m writing a story about a girl that has suffered a lot in her past and being ice-cold is her way to get over it. I will give you a description of her and some ideas I had for her name.
(insert name here) Blackthorn: as I said, she suffered a lot in her past. Her mother died right after she was born and she blames herself for that, although no one does besides her. Later on, her dad, who is a sergeant, is killed in service (I don’t know if that’s the actual word, sorry if it’s not, because english is not my mother tongue). Then, she is adopted by her aunt and she puts (insert name here) in a boarding school, so she doesn’t actually have to take care of her. Because of all that, (insert name here) becomes cold and mean to people that try to know her better. She doesn’t want to let anyone in because she has never liked to feel vulnerable. She is also very confident of herself on the exterior and she is quite spoiled. Her hair color is black and her eyes are deep green. She has angled eyebrows and an angled face as well.
So, the story is set in [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m], in 2016. Personally, I really like the nickname [name_u]Abby[/name_u] and if you could also give me suggestions for a first name for that nickname, I would be very happy. I know, I thought about [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] too, but that’s so overused. Oh, I like the name [name_u]America[/name_u], but, I don’t know.
Well, I’m open for suggestions and tips.
Thanks already, love you all.

Personally, I think a name more exotic and neutral would fit into her personality better. Like [name_u]America[/name_u], yes.

[name_u]Raven[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_u]River[/name_u]
[name_u]Tyler[/name_u]
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]

I would also recommend altering her character slightly. She has great potential but she does sound a bit ‘marysueish’, and some traits are sort of contradicting. For instance, the idea that she blames herself for her mothers death doesn’t currently seem to have much sense behind it, and to me, would only make sense if someone had been pressuring her into believing that; it isnt often that a young child adopts such a negative view. And, if she’s ‘spoiled’ but has also been sent to a boarding school so she won’t have to be dealt with, then those things really contradict each other. I think she could use more depth mixed in with her, instead of just straight tragedy. Next to that, she has obvious potential, and I’d be very excited to read into her story.

Some names that might work are
[name_u]Dara[/name_u]
[name_f]Kyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Reyna[/name_f]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
Eilliani (nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f])

In reference to her mother, I agree with the first response that her blaming herself for her mother’s death doesn’t make sense unless it’s predicated on someone providing that idea to her. It would make more sense if she was older (like around 5 and didn’t understand how death worked) or if the mother died on the way to go to a dance recital or something. Basically, the daughter thinks it is her fault because the mother was on the way to see her and if she wasn’t, she’d still be alive.

In reference to her father; a lot of people say killed in the line of duty or killed in action, but killed in service is okay.

I think because her dad was in the military, she would definitely have a bit more of an exotic name, especially if he travels a lot. Her mom may also not necessarily be from the USA. I’ve met a few people who have one parent from the USA, but they met their partner in the country they were stationed, so that could be something to look into.

With that being said, I think [name_u]America[/name_u] could work as her name, with [name_f]Amy[/name_f] or [name_f]Rica[/name_f] as her nickname.

Other suggestions:

[name_f]Harriett[/name_f], [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f], [name_f]Kyra[/name_f], [name_f]Liesel[/name_f], [name_f]Zosia[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Teresa[/name_f], [name_f]Gianna[/name_f], [name_f]Lilliana[/name_f], [name_f]Leona[/name_f]

I also agree that since her father did serve in the military, it would be reasonable for her to have a less common name.

What about…

[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Lexi[/name_u] or [name_u]Alex[/name_u])
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u])
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f])
[name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] (nn [name_u]Brooke[/name_u])
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_u]Nori[/name_u])
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f])
[name_f]Maxima[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Max[/name_u])
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Sera[/name_f])

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!

Here are some of my suggestions:

[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]
[name_f]Viveka[/name_f]
[name_f]Hana[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Anneke[/name_f]

I know they’re all vastly different styles, but they seem to me to fit the kind of person your character is.
