We just found out we are having a boy (our fist baby!). If this baby had been a girl, she most likely would have been [name]Louisa[/name] [name]Felicity[/name] [name]Wren[/name] our surname sounds like Ball-tiss. So far the only sure thing is that his first middle name will be [name]Walter[/name] after DH’s grandfather. We have been toying with [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] “[name]Theo[/name]” but neither of us are sold. The reason we like [name]Theodore[/name] “[name]Theo[/name]” is it goes well with [name]Louisa[/name] (for a possible future daughter) and its old but has a spunky nickname. DH is not keen on any of the names in my signature so I desperately need to expand our list so we will have some names to choose from. Also, [name]Frederick[/name] is a little boring as the second middle when compared to [name]Wren[/name] for a girl so any suggestions on that would be amazing as well.
So, names with similar style and spunk to [name]Theodore[/name] “[name]Theo[/name]”?
Thanks so much!
P.s. I am especially sad about DH’s resistance to [name]Dashiell[/name] “[name]Dash[/name]” I just don’t get what he doesn’t like!
I guess you can’t use that last one if the next name will be [name]Walter[/name], but I’m just trying to get a more exact picture of what you like. To me, these are similar in feel to some in your signature. What does husband suggest besides [name]Theodore[/name]?
[name]Louisa[/name] [name]Felicity[/name] [name]Wren[/name] is insanely gorgeous. It’s perfect.
I don’t know how well it would go with [name]Louisa[/name], but I like [name]Theron[/name] nicknamed [name]Theo[/name] as an alternative to [name]Theodore[/name]. It’s a Greek name which means “hunter”. It charted in the top 1000 up until the early 90s, when it dropped off.
It’s already been mentioned, but I think that [name]Jasper[/name] would go amazingly with [name]Louisa[/name]. However, it doesn’t really flow well with [name]Walter[/name].
[name]How[/name] about …
[name]Isidore[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Hugh[/name]
[name]Ivan[/name]
[name]Roland[/name]
[name]Edgar[/name]
[name]Dunstan[/name]
[name]Tristram[/name]
[name]Harold[/name] ("[name]Hal[/name]"?)
[name]Phineas[/name]
[name]Leopold[/name] “[name]Leo[/name]”
[name]Milo[/name] (or [name]Miles[/name] “[name]Milo[/name]”)
[name]Everett[/name]
[name]Calvin[/name] “[name]Cal[/name]”
[name]Victor[/name]
[name]Elias[/name] “[name]Eli[/name]”
[name]Ephraim[/name]
[name]Desmond[/name] (or [name]Esmond[/name]!)
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Phoebus[/name]?
[name]William[/name] “[name]Wim[/name]” (I don’t know how much this will appeal to other people, but [name]Wim[/name] is apparently a Dutch nickname for [name]Wilhelm[/name] which I think is absolutely adorable.)
[name]Heathcliff[/name] “[name]Heath[/name]” (Maybe?)
I love [name]Theodore[/name] and especially with [name]Louisa[/name]! and [name]Louisa[/name] [name]Felicity[/name] [name]Wren[/name] really is wonderful.
I would suggest names that have a similar feel to [name]Theodore[/name] for your consideration, but so many great ones have already been suggested! Are you liking any of them?
For [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] ?, I think maybe you need something one syllable like [name]Wren[/name] to keep the rhythm punchy? Here are some one-syl names and word names, some of which I’ve actually heard on men:
Keeping with F like [name]Frederick[/name]:
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Fleet[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Flint[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Ford[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Fox[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Frank[/name] (more staid, but still kinda cool to me - Sinatra and [name]Lloyd[/name] [name]Wright[/name], and the word frank)
Then there are all of these, very different in style but see what sticks:
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Ace[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Beau[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Bram[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Cade[/name] (see my note on [name]Cole[/name])
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Cole[/name] (trendy but very handsome, and there’s so much tradition here something trendy is nice : D)
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Dash[/name] (would your DH consider this as a nod to [name]Dashiell[/name]?)
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Dax[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Gray[/name]/[name]Grey[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Gus[/name]/[name]Gust[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Heath[/name] (like this from above!)
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Jeb[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Jed[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Leif[/name]/[name]Leaf[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Max[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Miles[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Paul[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Reed[/name]/[name]Reid[/name]/[name]Read[/name] (this is one of my favorites)
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Reese[/name]/[name]Reece[/name]/[name]Rhys[/name] (this is one of my favorites)
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Rex[/name] (this is one of my favorites)
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Rhodes[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Ross[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Russ[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Saul[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Seth[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Sol[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Stone[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] Swift
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Wolf[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Zane[/name]
Anyway, I am sure there are more of these but I’ll stop for now. Does thinking in terms of one syllable seem right to you? No sweat if not : D, but thought it was a place to start!
@dantea - I love [name]Vincent[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Oliver[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Edward[/name], [name]Henry[/name], but DH either doesn’t like them, or I worry about popularity (mostly with [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name]) do you think they are in the “popular enough that there are more than one a class” zone? Names like [name]Thaddeus[/name] and [name]Tobias[/name] don’t sound that great with Ball-tiss becuase of the repeated “s” sounds
@thetxbelle - I love many of those names but [name]Theodore[/name] is as far as DH would go, and he’s not even sold (although neither am I)
@natrose - my husband doesn’t suggest any names! I hate it. I thought I had him liking [name]Jude[/name] at one point, but when I brought it up again later he completely changed his mind! It’s for the best though as someone we know is considering [name]Jude[/name] if she has a girl! I love tons of names on your list like…oh seriously I like them all. A few won’t work like [name]Silas[/name] Ball-tiss just doesn’t sound right. I especially love [name]George[/name] but we get such a negative reaction from people I think it scared DH off.
@nono - DH says no to [name]Jasper[/name] becuase of Twilight, which he hates and [name]Theron[/name] becuase of the actress sigh :s he has also already said no to [name]Oscar[/name], [name]William[/name] and [name]Milo[/name]. I love [name]Leopold[/name] and DH likes [name]Leo[/name], but it would prevent us from using [name]Louisa[/name] in the future, which is very important to me (it’s a family name).
@jesba - I like tons of the suggestions, it’s just none of them fit. I think [name]Theodore[/name] is amazing and I think I would choose it (because nothing else so far feels “more right” than [name]Theo[/name]) but I feel like DH is getting cold feet about it and he’s started to push away from it. It’s hard though when he doesn’t like anything else! I think your really getting what I was trying to get at with a spunkier second middle for [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Walter[/name] There are some really great ones on that list, fox , dash, leaf, [name]Reid[/name], stone, wolf, and [name]Jude[/name] to name a few (although [name]Jude[/name] is off the table for the reason above!)
Well, in my daycare experience, I’ve never met a [name]Henry[/name] or an [name]Oliver[/name], but I know that [name]Henry[/name] seems to be getting popular. I’ve never met a kid walking around in public named either of those either, and i do tend to ask or listen for their names. I think [name]Oliver[/name] is less popular than [name]Henry[/name] though and sounds better with your last name. [name]Oliver[/name] Ball-tiss.
Why not just go with [name]Theo[/name] as a first name instead of [name]Theodore[/name]? Its a legitimate name and says a lot in just a few letters Its very distinguished sounding on its own if you ask me!
Thanks dantea, I really do appreciate the insight! I think sometimes I do get a little caught up on avoiding popular names to the point where I eliminate some of my very favourites. I think [name]Oliver[/name] is a fantastic name so hopefully DH will Agree to add it to the list ( that will then consist of [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name]!)
Please give me feedback on the ones I have here. The names that come to mind for you would be:
[name]Joel[/name]
[name]Justus[/name]
[name]Eli[/name]/[name]Elijah[/name]
[name]Kenneth[/name]
[name]Westley[/name]
[name]Isaiah[/name]
[name]Gideon[/name]
[name]Palmer[/name]
[name]Niles[/name] or [name]Miles[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name] (Which I particularly like with you ln, and [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Walter[/name] or [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] both sound good)
[name]Asher[/name]
[name]Edmund[/name]
[name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Xavier[/name]
A name I was recently introduced to: Nealan ([name]Neil[/name]-in)
Also just a side note, did you know the French form of [name]Theo[/name], Théo ([name]Tay[/name]-o)?
Actually my DH would rather just go with [name]Theo[/name], but Im not so sure…I think I prefer [name]Theodore[/name], especially along side our other name choices (for girls) like [name]Louisa[/name]. It’s definitely a conversation we are having though!
@ redtulips
[name]Joel[/name] - I think we grew up with too many [name]Joel[/name]'s for it to be a contender
[name]Justus[/name] - I know a little girl named [name]Justice[/name], plus we are not fans of the repeated s sound with our last name
[name]Eli[/name]/[name]Elijah[/name] - too religious sounding for us I think
[name]Kenneth[/name] - same as [name]Joel[/name]
[name]Westley[/name] - just not a fan, not sure why!
[name]Isaiah[/name] - too religious sounding, at least to me, I just think bible
[name]Gideon[/name] - I love but DH hates
[name]Palmer[/name] - too obviously surnamey although I do like [name]Dashiell[/name] and some other surname names…hum…
[name]Niles[/name] or [name]Miles[/name] - repeated s sound again
[name]Hugo[/name] (Which I particularly like with you ln, and [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Walter[/name] or [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] both sound good) - I like it but can’t seem to get anyone else on board!
[name]Asher[/name] - meh, I prefer [name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Edmund[/name] - love! But DH is not a fan of [name]Ed[/name] names, I also love [name]Edwin[/name]
[name]Alexander[/name] - like, but too popular I think…
[name]Xavier[/name] - I like it, but for some reason I feel like we would be trying to hard lol maybe that’s weird
A name I was recently introduced to: Nealan ([name]Neil[/name]-in) - that’s seriously awesome seeing as DH’s middle name is [name]Neil[/name] (and actually my grandfathers name is [name]Cornelious[/name] “[name]Neil[/name]” and my uncle’s name is [name]Neil[/name]) it was a strange coincidence when I first met my husband.
Also just a side note, did you know the French form of [name]Theo[/name], Théo ([name]Tay[/name]-o)? -I didn’t know that, but I think I still like [name]Theo[/name] better. Argh, this is so hard!
Thank you so much for your response, lots to think about
