The first thing I thought of was actually not Deuteronomy from the Bible, but Old Deuteronomy from the musical CATS. I think those are the only two places I’ve ever heard it used. In all honesty, my first reaction was that it’s not really usable, mostly just because it’s quite long and doesn’t have an obvious nickname. (Dude? [name_m]Ron[/name_m]? Actually now that I say it, I kind of like [name_m]Ron[/name_m]; it would be so unexpected when people found out that his full name was not [name_m]Ronald[/name_m], but Deuteronomy.) I don’t think that being religious or not makes a difference. [name_f]My[/name_f] only argument against it is the length… five syllables and 11 letters is a lot for an everyday name, if you weren’t planning to do a nickname. Overall, I think it would work better as a middle name; I do like that it’s unique but historical and recognizable.
Honestly I find this name to be quite cumbersome. It’s pretty long and kind of a mouthful, plus it’s a very…out there choice, even for someone who is religious. If I were to hear someone calling this name out loud to a child, I would think they were trying too hard when they chose the name and I’d feel sorry for the kid. Sorry if that sounds harsh, just my honest opinion.
Obvious nn to me would be [name_m]Deuce[/name_m]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!
Obvious nn is [name_m]Deuce[/name_m] and I love it. This whole “trying to hard” thinking is just silly, you SHOULD put some thought into your child’s name.
[name_m]Deuce[/name_m] reminds me of the movie [name_m]Deuce[/name_m] Bigalow, Male Gigolo or of the term “dropping a deuce”…taking a poop essentially
What do you think of the name Deuteronomy (dude-ah-ron-ah-mee) for a boy?
It’s very long and has some associations that I wouldn’t want for a child. Or for anyone really.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s usable in general?
No. The negative associations are too much for any person to bear.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think its usable if you’re not religious?
No. Regardless of whether you are religious or not, christianity is currently a large part of western society and therefore the name and all it encompasses will be immediately associated with religion.
What middles would you pair with it?
I just wouldn’t use it. But I guess something short to balance it out.
Not at all usable. It’s too cumbersome and it doesn’t have a nice sound.
I’ve never heard it with a “dude” pronunciation. I’ve always heard it as doo-tuh-ron-uh-mee.
Deuteronomy isn’t a name, it’s a book in the bible. It means “second law”.
It is absolutely NOT usable. It’s even weird for the super religious.
Not usable.
This. Yeah, the first syllable sounds like doot not dude. Not usable. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the book is, well, a bit of a downer since it’s all about the [name_m]Law[/name_m].
I think of the CATS musical character too! Its one of my favourite musicals, but i would never use the name… for a human anyway, it would make an awesome cat name, though!!!
Yep, this, except I’ve always heard it as ‘dyoo-tuh-ron-oh-me’.
That’s a very judgmental, ridiculous, rude, foolish, inconsiderate comment to even consider making. Everyone puts thought into someone’s name, it’s impossible not to. You have to choose a name some how, think about if you like it or not, and then decide if you can use it. Or you have to decide that you wish to carry on a family tradition. No matter what thought is put into [name_f]EVERY[/name_f] name.
“Trying to hard” is a term that relates to trying to hard to be different and out there. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that someone didn’t put thought into a child’s name.
Deuteronomy is not a name, it’s way too long and difficult to pronounce, and, it’s a bit silly. Could you honestly introduce yourself to someone, at the age you are now, as Deuteronomy? I highly doubt it.
