In today’s “Ask the Name [name_u]Sage[/name_u]” section, “A Name for [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f]'s [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Brother” A name for Roxanne’s baby brother? | Nameberry, [name_u]Abby[/name_u] suggested [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m] as a possible choice.
I’m really surprised at this “sighting,” because I had [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m] on my list less than four years ago and it got a lot of mixed reviews at the time. A few Berries liked it, but it was pretty out-there for most, and my sister said it, “sounded like a midlife crisis.” (I never knew what a midlife crisis sounded like in the first place, ha ha!)
Only a couple of people seconded [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m] as a suggestion, so I’m wondering if people still think it’s too out there, or if times have changed that much in just a couple of years. What do you think?
I like it, but I wouldn’t use it- mostly because I’m not [name_m]French[/name_m]…
[name_m]Devereaux[/name_m] is a cool name. Definitely a little out-there mostly because the spelling and pronunciation aren’t very intuitive, at least not to my American ear. Though [name_u]Abby[/name_u] brought up a good point in the blog saying it has the cute nickname [name_m]Dev[/name_m]. I have to admit I did give it a second thought after I thought about that. I like [name_m]Dev[/name_m] a lot!
That’s certainly an interesting suggestion! I completely second @meyera4’s sentiments, so I won’t go too much into it since it’s already been said. The only other thing I have to say is that [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m] just reminds me of [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Girls [name_f]Blanche[/name_f] [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m] lol…which isn’t a bad thing. Oh, and it seems too surnamey to use as a first name, personally. [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_m]Smith[/name_m], [name_m]Jones[/name_m], etc. I could see, but [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m] seems a bit long.
Yes! [name_u]Golden[/name_u] girls reference! That is exactly what I think of when I hear this name.
Where I live this is a common enough name that I’ve known several (Acadian surname). The “english” families who have this as a surname (I use quotations because I would argue their ancestry is also [name_m]French[/name_m] or Acadian if this is their last name) pronounce the X on the end. Which blows my mind.
I like the sound of this name but it still feels like a name trying to be unique but on trend. Which I’m not saying is bad but not something I relate to.
