DH is driving me up a wall...

Rant: [name_u]Ever[/name_u] since we found out that we are having a girl (Last [name_f]Monday[/name_f]). All I can think about is names. The handful of names DH contributed are non-starters with me…and he dislikes most of what I throw out. His taste is very feminine names that where super common for our generation (ie. [name_f]Rachel[/name_f], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f])…and would be perfectly happy naming her after one of his sisters. My preference is for feminine with vintage charm (top of my list right now is [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]). So far, the following have made our short list (names that haven’t been shot down by him):

[name_f]Claire[/name_f]/[name_f]Clara[/name_f] (I prefer [name_f]Clara[/name_f], he prefers [name_f]Claire[/name_f])

We are also fans of traditional middle names:

Does anyone have any other names I could pitch to him? [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

I like [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f], quite a bit.
I suggest [name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

I like all the names on your list! (although I definately prefer [name_f]Claire[/name_f] to [name_f]Clara[/name_f], and for your middle I like [name_f]Marie[/name_f], as I think it’s the only middle that isn’t heard all the time right now. I probably like [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] or [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f] the best!

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful. I really like [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] too.
Other ideas:

[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] would be lovely.

Since the theme of his favorite names are similar to the kinds of middles he likes, why not compromise with one of his picks in the middle?

[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridgette[/name_f] [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Nicole[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] [name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

That’s awesome that you both like the same middle names!
I love [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f] in the middle name spot-can’t go wrong!
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is another classic middle name fav of mine.
As for your first name options, [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful! I love [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] best from your list. [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] grace and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are stunning.
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] is lovely as well but I’m not loving it with your middle name options. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is adorable but feels a bit boring next to your other options.
As for other first name suggestions that are feminine with vintage charm but kind of classic/more common for dh:

Since he likes [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] how about [name_f]Savannah[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is about as pretty as it gets. Since you like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]… how about [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]? [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]?

I will also suggest [name_f]Maple[/name_f] for a name with a lovely vintage feel that is still modern.

[name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_f]Antonia[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Nancy[/name_f], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Simone[/name_u], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Philippa[/name_f], [name_f]Dina[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Hallie[/name_f], [name_f]Delia[/name_f], [name_f]Dinah[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Camille[/name_f], [name_f]Annamarie[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Bianca[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] / [name_f]Annalise[/name_f], [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] / [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], [name_f]Sally[/name_f], [name_f]Wendy[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Cassie[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], [name_f]Angelica[/name_f], [name_f]Joanna[/name_f], [name_u]Meredith[/name_u], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] / [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Angelina[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], [name_f]Bessie[/name_f], [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Jennie[/name_f], [name_f]Carolina[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Serena[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Julianna[/name_f], [name_f]Alma[/name_f], [name_f]Corinne[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Giselle[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_u]Josie[/name_u], [name_f]Judith[/name_f], [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f], [name_f]Laurel[/name_f], [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_u]Connie[/name_u], [name_u]Stevie[/name_u], [name_u]Billie[/name_u], [name_f]Georgina[/name_f].

I think a lot of men don’t pay much attention to the baby names they hear around them. In all likelyhood, he probably thinks that little [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] would be teased for their unusual names. Maybe you could show him some of the current popular baby name lists?

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] are gorgeous!
But [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is not vintage to me, and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is very very popular. [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is not vintage either, I think it’s more out-dated. I don’t like [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f] and [name_f]Viviane[/name_f].

I would choose [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. It’s vintage but it has modern sonorities, it’s sweet and elegant, I love it (it’s my grand mother’s name. Her middle name is [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]).

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] sound perfect!

I would suggest [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], it seems to suite both of your tastes. And it’s very pretty!
My husband vetoed all of my favorites, feeling your pain. But a lot of names just had to grow on him awhile before he started to like them, maybe just give it a little time. Good luck!

I like from your list:
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] – definitely my favorite. (I prefer spelling [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] but that doesn’t matter lol)

Wow, I went to bed and woke up to 3 pages of replies.

I think part of our issue is that my husband doesn’t rush into things. He rarely feels a sense of urgency about anything. Lol he thinks “we still have 4 months, we have plenty of time!” I, on the other hand, am rather anxious and can’t stand the thought of not having a perfect name picked out for her when she comes into this world.

First off, I’m not ready to give up on [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] just yet…and I did show him how that the popularity of [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is on the rise…but not yet top 10. He doesn’t hate the name, but he doesn’t seem to like the nicknames associated with it as much as I do….Our last name rhymes with beach….I wonder if he has an issue with the super long ee sound in a first name? ([name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f]) I’ll have to ask him.

I feel like [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is pretty with just about any middle name. It’s fluid nature lends itself to many different sounds following it. I consider this a vintage name because even though it’s not Victorian it evokes the 20s and 30s…ie. [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] Plath. (I love a good nod to literature!)…In my mind, if we used it, we would probably call her [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f].

Ahhh the name [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], I have a love, hate relationship with that name. Hubby likes it, and it was my late Grandmother’s name and I would love to honor her in that way….I just don’t like the name much. That being said, it will probably make it in as a middle name in the future.

I agree that [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is a bit over used at the moment…it’s too bad :frowning: It’s how [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] got thrown out as well.

Names suggested here that have been shot down :frowning: :
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] (this one would actually be kind of cool to use. We were actually planning an African safari when we found out we were expecting. We ended up back burner-ing that adventure for one far more amazing :))…I may bring this one up again.

[name_m]New[/name_m] Names to Pitch:

There are a lot of names that I like that are already present in his rather large family….but we aren’t trying to name our daughter after anyone that isn’t a parent or grandparent. So that nixes [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_f]Corrine[/name_f], and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a first name.

Of all the options you’ve presented so far, my vote is for [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (combining your classic/popular middle picks of [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f]).

What about (sorry for repeats):

[name_f]Margery[/name_f]/[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] (derived from [name_f]Margaret[/name_f])

I got some of these ideas from here: Top names of the 1900s You might find some from other decades that aren’t as common as [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], but still feel fresh to you.

[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] would be very pretty!

On your list, I like [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] (spelled this way). [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t despair! Sometimes you have to sit with a name for a while before you see the light (and when I say “you,” I mean your husband. And pretty much men in general)
I haven’t gone through all the postings, so forgive any repeats.

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] (simple, classic, elegant, timeless)
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f] / [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]

A thought just occurred to me…what do y’all think of using [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as a first name but calling her [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] for short?
