Recently, I named my daughter [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. We thought [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] fit with her sister’s names-[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] was for my grandmother. However, based on feedback from family and friends, we are a bit concerned about the [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] association. Should we change it or leave it as [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]?
Nope. You’re good. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] isn’t a bad association, and it’s a pretty name.
However, if you want to change it, go for it.
I really love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]! [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] is not a bad association, and she was not the first to have the name. It’s a lovely name, and I think you should stick with it!
I think hermione is nice. It’s not a bad connotation to have since she’s a really strong and smart character. People might think you like [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] a lot though.
No! I love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and although [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] is the first thing that will come to mind to most people, it’s actually a Greek mythology name. I love it and the names of your other two girls!
I think changing it depends on whether you really love the name. If [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is the name you fell in love with, then you should stick with it despite the associations!
I love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]! It’s on my own list. I think it goes great with her sisters’ names.
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is gorgeous. I wouldn’t change a thing.
If you love the name, keep it! As others have said, it’s not a negative association!
I looooove [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] I think it’s a wonderful choice!
In combination with [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], it does make me think of Harry [name_m]Potter[/name_m] a bit – [name_f]Sybill[/name_f] is another character’s name – but as others have said, it’s a positive association to me.
Hermione is such a smart, strong, beautiful name. If you’re no longer in love with it, it’s not too late to change it, but if I were you I’d stick with it! [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is awesome.
Update:
Thank you for all your helpful advice! We’ve decided to keep [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] as it suits her very well.
I agree that [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] is not the only person to have the name nor is she a bad association.
I completely agree with my fellow posters- [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is a beautiful name and moreover one that has meaning to you. I’m so glad you decided to keep it!
Stick with [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. It’s a lovely name and the association isn’t a bad one
Leave it. It’s a lovely name.
Yay Thanks for the update.
I would love to be called [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], I’m sure your daughter will appreciate her fabulous name when she’s older!
Okay, I just commented on someone else’s concerns about [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], so a bit of this is actually copy and pasted.
I adore the name [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. I don’t think it’s unusable - it definitely has a heavy [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association, but I don’t think it’s that much of a problem. I mean, people still use the names [name_u]Harry[/name_u] and [name_m]Ronald[/name_m]. The only reason [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is so strongly associated with HP is because it was fairly uncommon before the books came out - but it’s starting to pick up now! Not just on kids, I’ve seen a couple of adult women named [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] on TV shows.
Besides, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] isn’t a bad association. She was a strong and clever female lead, who, quite frankly, is a big reason why [name_u]Harry[/name_u] survived the series. She has her flaws, sure, but so does every character – that’s what makes them interesting.
If your daughter ever decides she doesn’t want the association, she can always go by [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. If you love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], keep it!
I love, love, love the name! I don’t think that you should change your daughters beautiful name because of [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] at all!
It’s not a bad association. If it’s a name you really love then you should keep it.
Don’t change it! [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is a lovely name and the [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] association isn’t at all a negative one.
I love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], especially with big sisters [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]! [name_f]My[/name_f] only thought is [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is also in the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] world (a professor at Hogwarts) so it maybe is a lot of connection. I wouldn’t let other people sway you though! [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] from [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] is a wonderful connection, and she’s an amazing heroine to be named for. In addition, the actress [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_m]Watson[/name_m] who played [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] does a lot of philanthropic work and is also a great role model for a young girl. What about a nickname to distance it slightly from [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_m]Granger[/name_m] (no nicknames)? Hermy, [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Hen[/name_f], and tons more ideas that I can’t think of right now.
TLDR don’t change it! As long as you love it, that’s all that matters! People will get used to it! Maybe try a nickname to make it more approachable.
