It also reminds me of the payment method “per diem”, but my first thought would be the expression “carpe diem”. I think it’s an interesting one, creative and a bit boho-sounding.
I think it would be nice in Europe or [name_f]Asia[/name_f]. But I’m in the US and I’ve heard way too many people (particularly in the south and midwest) pronounce the IE as an A, which essentially turns Diem in to Damn. Not exactly the nicest name for a kid.
The south would be the worst. My little cousin [name_m]Damien[/name_m] turns into Damy-[name_f]Anne[/name_f] anywhere south of [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u]. But if you’re in a place where people would actually say “[name_f]Dee[/name_f]-em” and not butcher it to make a swear word…it might actually be a nice name! Still a little too out there for my tastes, though.
I’ve actually been mulling this over myself lately, so I’m interested to see how the poll turns out. I like it a lot, but worry it’s too out-there.
@mimiottawa I figure most people’s first thought would be “Carpe Diem” which I don’t mind as that is my favorite quote; Didn’t think of “per diem” though. Thanks for the compliments, I really love this name.
@tarynamber I see your point as I have heard [name_m]Damien[/name_m] pronounced Damy-[name_f]Anne[/name_f] but I never thought of that (and not everyone pronounces it that way)! I can appreciate the criticism as I know some people may not like this name, I just do these polls to see if people liking this name are in the majority or the minority. Not sure where I’ll be living if I have kids so I guess we’ll cross that bridge when it comes, if it is unusable I have other names on there.
@courtneymarie I’m glad someone else likes this name… I actually think it is perfectly usable, I just worry other people might think it is too out there.
I thought “carpe diem” first…but my main concern is that it could easily be mis-heard as “BM.” cringe
My only experience with this as a name is Diem [name_m]Brown[/name_m] from the MTV challenges. It works on her. I vote usable.
I love this name! It completely reminds me of Diem from Road Rules/Real World and, although I’ve never thought of Carpe Diem, I’ve always thought it was such an awesome name bc it’s so pretty and rare.
Its the first time I hear that name and I think it’s perfectly usable.I find it really pretty and I don’t think it has any potential ( of all I can think of) for teasing. It’s not too out there as many names are today. And how rude of him to do that!!!
@saracita00 It is nice to hear an alternate opinion… I appreciate the feedback
@Amylin15 I agree… if she could carry the name on television it should be usable.
@hopefulmommy Great to hear someone else likes the name. I agree it is pretty and rare.
@bellerose Nice to hear from you, I agree I can’t see teasing potential. I thought it was really rude as well, but I got over it after I realized he brought the gorgeous name Diem to my attention.
My hubby and I are actually deciding tight now on a girl name and I think we have it down to [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] or Diem. I love the real world /road rules challanges. The name Diem really grew on me from that show. I really think it is strong and feminine and pretty. We already have
[name_m]Diesel[/name_m] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] [name_m]Liam[/name_m]
So his little sister may be
Diem [name_f]Winona[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
Then we’ll have [name_m]Diesel[/name_m] and Diem
[name_m]Diesel[/name_m] and Diem would be so cute! Especially because [name_m]Derrick[/name_m]'s nickname was [name_m]Diesel[/name_m] and they were partners on Fresh Meat ![]()
I think Diem is totally, completely usable. I remember when I first started watching The Challenge, I was pleasantly surprised to see Diem’s name. It totally works in every context.
Also, she was such an inspirational person that there’s not a negative context there. If I could be named after anyone, I would not mind being named after Diem at all.
Another way to get Diem is as a nickname. I believe her actual name was [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and Diem came from “DM”, her initials.
Lol, this is making me sad because that’s my favorite show actually. R.I.P. Diem.
