[name_m]New[/name_m] baby expected early 2016 and we don’t know the gender (and won’t until birth!)
We already have a little boy - [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]. At the moment we’ve discussed and discounted the following boys’ names for a variety of reasons:
[name_m]Bertram[/name_m]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m] (can you guess we were trying to find a route to little [name_u]Bertie[/name_u]?!)
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_m]Horatio[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]
The current option that’s stood the test of time over the past few months (suggested by me and not vetoed by OH) is [name_m]Diggory[/name_m].
What do you think? Useable? (We’re in [name_u]London[/name_u], UK).
I’m not sure about [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] and having a hard time warming up to it. I like [name_m]Bertram[/name_m] especially if you would like to call him [name_u]Bertie[/name_u].
Not a fan of [name_m]Diggory[/name_m]; it’s just too clunky for me and I wouldn’t pair it with [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]. But it does lead me to [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] (as in [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] in the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] novels) which I love with [name_m]Rufus[/name_m].
I can only think of [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] [name_m]Diggory[/name_m], as someone pointed out. I’m not a fan of surnames as names. I like [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] on your list, but I also would suggest [name_m]Cedric[/name_m].
Interesting to hear that people associate it with the HP character though and think of it as a surname because of that. Literary connections take me to Digory [name_m]Kirk[/name_m] ([name_f]Narnia[/name_f]) and [name_m]Venn[/name_m] ([name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Hardy[/name_m]) before Rowling! And it’s a first name in Cornwall, where I’m from…
Thanks for the input though If we do go for a [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] name it will probably be [name_m]Bertram[/name_m] as there’s no way OH will consider [name_m]Albert[/name_m]. I suggested [name_m]Wilbert[/name_m] the other day (as in Rev W Awdry of [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] the Tank fame) and that might have legs… Why is it so much more difficult this time round?!
I ” [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] (and [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m]). OH really not convinced but I think I’d have more of a chance convincing him of the former. I also like [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] but think it might be a bit of a stretch from there to [name_u]Bertie[/name_u].
I like [name_m]Wilbert[/name_m] and [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] together. I think like others said, [name_m]Diggory[/name_m] may be a little much next to [name_m]Rufus[/name_m]. I also like [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] and [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] as well. I think [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] would work for a nn for [name_m]Bernard[/name_m], but [name_u]Bernie[/name_u] would come to mind first.
Other “[name_u]Bert[/name_u]” ideas
[name_m]Robert[/name_m]
[name_m]Rubert[/name_m]
[name_m]Herbert[/name_m]
[name_m]Elbert[/name_m]
I like [name_m]Diggory[/name_m]. It reminds me of the actor [name_m]Dougray[/name_m] [name_m]Scott[/name_m] (I loved him in Arabian Nights). Are you going with the nn Diggy? Rev Run (member of Run DMC) has a son called Diggy ([name_m]Daniel[/name_m]) and I always thought it was a cute nn.
Thanks Nat108! Yes, we’re thinking Diggy or Digger as nns… I like [name_m]Dougray[/name_m] too. And [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], from your signature, is another favourite but it’s been chosen by two sets of close friends recently x
