My husband and I are considering the name Digory/Diggory for a little boy, but can’t decide on a spelling! Growing up reading The Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] I always assumed that Digory with one G was the correct spelling, and so it looks more visually appealing to me. After researching the name further, I’ve gotten conflicting results as to which is the “normal” spelling, but most say that Digory is a variant on the original Diggory.
What do you think? Is Digory a made up spelling? I usually prefer classic spellings and wouldn’t want his name to constantly be misspelled.
That would make such an awesome name! As a quirky middle it would be nice. I like the Diggory spelling more, but it’s not like you will be correcting many people as much as just telling them how to spell it. But it is quirky/cool : )
I too love Digory from the Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f].
However, I also love [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] Diggory from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].
I see Digory as more first-name-ish. Best of luck!
Digory certainly isn’t made up. It’s been in use for hundreds of years, especially in Cornwall where it remained popular from (at least) the 16th century right through to the Victorian era, far exceeding the popularity of the Diggory spelling. It’s got bags of history.
I prefer the spelling with one G. It seems more attractive to me and more like a given name, whereas Diggory looks like a surname.
I prefer the Diggory spelling. The second “g” makes it look more complete to me. With that said, the Digory spelling doesn’t look made up either, and if you like it better, use it! Diggory (or Digory) is such a great choice, by the way! It’s pleasant sounding and quirky.
Being more [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] influenced than [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] influence, Diggory feels better to me than Digory, but even so, I can’t see it as a first name.
I prefer the Diggory spelling because that’s the spelling I’m used to seeing in the numerous baby name books I’ve collected over the years. But if Digory means more to you, it’s perfectly fine too!
I like the Diggory spelling. It looks more complete that way. My uncle had a best friend named Digger when I was little (it was a nickname) and I always thought it was the coolest name! I love Diggory!
