Dimity?

I’m surprised that so many people have less than positive things to say about this name. I love the it! I went to high school with a girl called Dimity, nn [name_f]Mim[/name_f], and she never had any problems with the “dim” first syllable that I know of. It didn’t come across as an odd name at all.

Although it isn’t my style, I’m pretty neutral on Dimity. I much prefer [name_f]Amity[/name_f], but I can see Dimity being usable. I’m not so sure on the nickname DimT however, it just sounds like you are calling her Dim T, not a really positive nickname [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

In theory, it’s beautiful, but the Dim- part lets it down.

I love the nickname [name_f]Mim[/name_f]! I don’t think I would have thought of that. I like it even more now.

At first I misread it as [name_m]Dimitry[/name_m], so she’ll have to deal with that for the rest of her life. Then I though of ‘dimity dumbity’. Then I followed one of the links and found:

My name is Dimity and growing up I absolutely hated it! I used to get dim-dam-dumb, dim stick, dip stick, dimity wimity (When I was 7 I wanted to change it to Natalie…lol) thank god I didn’t because now I can appreciate that it’s different and unique! Plus everyone says it’s ‘pretty’ or unusual but in a good way.

She grew to like it but it could’ve gone either. Really, once we’re out of grade school people have enough tact not to make fun of someone’s name (to their face) so of course she won’t hear much negativity as an adult.

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to help with the [name_f]Mim[/name_f] thing… It’s a shame that that pther girl didn’t have such a nice time… But I really don’t think it’s as bad as everyone is making out. I really think it’s very usuable. And [name_f]Mim[/name_f] is so sweet for a little girl right into adulthood.

thanks all. quite surprised by the general view. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Mim[/name_f] as a nickname.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] Dimity. I’ve kinda been waiting to see if it ever crops up here. I know a gorgeous girl with this name, she’s never had an issue with it (she’s part of the best named sibset i’ve ever come across too). She’s never had an issue with the ‘dim’ thing at all. I think it is a wonderful and uncommon name. I think Dimsie could be a cute nn - there’s an old English series of children’s novels about a girl with that name.

I like it theres and Australian newsreader named Dimity [name_m]Clancey[/name_m], she would be in her twenties and she makes it work for her so I think it is fine. and reasonably lovely

I think it is a lovely name! And why are people picking up on the dim part? Take [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] for example prnd as dill on’ and a dill here is a drip, a nerd, a smart alec, a kid with no brains, someone that everyone would prefer to steer clear of.

Another person who misread it as [name_m]Dimitry[/name_m] here. I like the idea of using [name_f]Demetria[/name_f] to gey DimT. Otherwise, [name_f]Amity[/name_f].

[name_m]Just[/name_m] adding that I still see [name_m]Dimitry[/name_m] when I see the title of the thread!
