Disappointed by zika

Anyone else disappointed regarding TTC and having to wait because of zika?

I feel so ready to start TTC for first baby, but related to some travel plans, this can’t happen for about 5 months!

I know it is not that long in the grand scheme of things, but it is so frustrating!

And I am not cancelling my travel plans.

I would love to hear your plans and frustrations!

This summer I asked my OBGYN how her patients, if at all, were reacting to Zika. She said if they are traveling, they are only going to Europe. I am conscious of it and glad mosquito weather is passing but do think it is very nerve wracking!

I live on a subtropical island. One island in our chain has had cases of local Zika virus infections. Our island hasn’t yet thankfully. While we’re no longer TTC because of other plans I have a few friends who are pregnant who have made sure that they keep plenty of bug spray on and citronella candles lit when they’re outside.

I put off TTC for 2 months due to travelling to a Zika infected country. It is so hard, but I really feel for the women living in places where Zika is a risk - they don’t get to wait until after the danger has passed. (I’m so sorry for you, @thefuturemrsb )

I talked to my doctor about it prior to travel, and she recommended we wait. We also had to be really careful while we were there, because Zika can stay in your system for months even after the symptoms have stopped showing (the symptoms are similar to a common cold in adults - it’s really only unborn children that are at major risk). It can be sexually transmitted, so your partner has to be careful too. We wore mozzie repellant 24/7 from the moment we stepped out of the shower, and wore light fitting, long sleeves and long pants. Maybe overkill, but we didn’t get bitten. We’re Aussie, so we’re used to wearing Aeroguard pretty much round the clock in warm weather.
