Disillusioned

After years of infertility, we are adopting from South Korea. We’re beyond stoked, but the problem with years of TTC is that any names we had picked out and loved were scooped up by friends and family members or have lost their luster.

My mother is an Irish dual citizen, and DH’s family is Irish as well. We have an Irish last name, and we always thought we wanted a truly “Irishy” first name to go with it. But DH’s cousin recently stole our favorite Irish boy name ([name]Finnegan[/name] [name]Seamus[/name]), and he has the same last name as us; so, that’s a no-go. Several of our other favorites (for boys and girls) have been taken as well.

Recently, I’ve just been feeling disillusioned with our choices. This child will be in a special circumstance. Ethnically Korean but culturally American with a mom and dad with strong Irish backgrounds…so what to do? Well, I just don’t know…

I was wondering if you all could look at some of these names in the light of our future wee one (like I said, Korean-Irish-American)…not all of our names are Irish anymore, I don’t know if we even care about that so much these days… We should be getting our referral in [name]May[/name]; so, at that time we’ll know if the baby is a girl or boy. I’d like to have our lists narrowed down to two boy and two girl names; so we can look at the pictures and choose then. That way, the foster family can start calling the baby by his/her new name.

Thanks for any and all advice in advance - much appreciated!

Boys:

[name]Colm[/name]
[name]Desmond[/name] ([name]Des[/name])
[name]Bram[/name]
[name]Indigo[/name]
[name]Rocket[/name]
[name]Moses[/name]
[name]Jago[/name]
[name]Bodhi[/name]
[name]Bardo[/name]
[name]Django[/name]
[name]Oz[/name]
[name]Barnaby[/name]
[name]Brogan[/name]

Girls:

[name]Fionnuala[/name] ([name]Ula[/name])
[name]Saoirse[/name]
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Lola[/name]
[name]Tallulah[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name])
[name]Brigid[/name]
[name]Lux[/name]
[name]Jemima[/name]
[name]Gypsy[/name]
[name]Hero[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Dylan[/name]

I like [name]Moses[/name] for a boy and [name]Delilah[/name] for a girl…

Since you are adopting maybe you could find out what the childs name is and check the meaning… maybe give a name with the same meaning???

ie. haneu means [name]SKY[/name] ( in korean) … [name]Avari[/name] also means sky or [name]Araceli[/name] means sky or…

[name]Just[/name] an idea!

I like [name]Bodhi[/name] and [name]Delilah[/name]

I like all your choices except for these which I fear would be inappropriate to attach to an adopted child.
[name]Colm[/name] - too close to Colen, even sounds the same when you say it out loud.
[name]Django[/name] - name of a big software coding program used by google.
[name]Rocket[/name] - I don’t think it’s a name for a person. Not my taste.

Favourite boys name from your list is [name]Bram[/name], [name]Barnaby[/name] ([name]Barnie[/name]), and [name]Brogan[/name]. Nice!!

Girls list:
[name]Gypsy[/name] - not a good choice of name for an adopted baby girl, gypsies already have negative connotation for being outcasts. Your precious girl does not need that idea with her.

Favourite from your list - [name]Lola[/name] (lolly), [name]Tallulah[/name], [name]Lux[/name] and [name]Jemima[/name] ([name]Mim[/name]). Super cute!

Good luck On your naming journey : )

I think [name]Abram[/name] [name]Moses[/name] would be a good fit nn [name]Bram[/name]. [name]Moses[/name] was adopted by the Egyptian queen and raised as her own and given great privilege.

[name]Jemima[/name] another biblical beauty, [name]Jemima[/name] [name]Ruth[/name] with nn of [name]Mimi[/name].

rollo

I am so happy for you! Congratulations : D! FYI I know a woman who is ethnically [name]Asian[/name] and who has a very Irish name. People generally react to it neutrally or well, I have heard people say things like “it’s a little surprising” but nothing too offensive or weird. However, that’s maybe still mildly insensitive, depending on how you look at it. [name]Hope[/name] you don’t mind that I shared that for your consideration. Here are my thoughts on your list.

Boys:

[name]Colm[/name] - I see the appeal but I think this will be lost in the sea of little Coles right now. No one will know how to spell this right. [name]Colin[/name] and [name]Malcolm[/name] are two similar names I’d recommend. [name]Malcolm[/name] nickname [name]Colm[/name] is cool. Maybe [name]Callum[/name].

[name]Desmond[/name] ([name]Des[/name]) - I [name]LOVE[/name] this. I think this is a great pick, it may be the most wearable of the boys’ names here. First of all and most importantly, I just think it’s a great name. Second of all, although it’s Irish in roots, it’s associated with people from diverse ethnicities - [name]Desmond[/name] Dekker, [name]Desmond[/name] Tutu, [name]Desi[/name] (sp?) on I [name]Love[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] (not actually sure he was a [name]Desmond[/name]? but still). I hope it’s not insensitive for me to kind of like that for your family. I think it’s cool : D.

[name]Bram[/name] - I really like [name]Bram[/name]. This is a good pick. I do kind of mildly prefer [name]Abram[/name] or [name]Abraham[/name] nn [name]Bram[/name], but it’s not huge.

[name]Indigo[/name] - hmm. This is cool but a lot of name for a kid to pull off. I also think it’s mildly unclear if it’s a boy or girl name. I’d love it as a middle though. [name]Desmond[/name] [name]Indigo[/name] is just incredibly handsome.

[name]Rocket[/name] - no. Sorry, but no. Too weird, the spaceship one, and also, it’s a vegetable. [name]Rocco[/name], while it wouldn’t be my top pick, is similar and I’d recommend that over this, with nn [name]Rocket[/name] if you want (or, I think [name]Rocket[/name] could just be a really fun high-energy nickname regardless of first name).

[name]Moses[/name] - I have mixed feelings. I like the sound. I love the pp’s comment on the connection to adoption. It’s a name with great history. Still, I mainly think of old men, and of [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow’s baby. If it’s your favorite, certainly use it, if it’s not, maybe something else.

[name]Jago[/name] - I [name]ADORE[/name] this name : D. However, again, it strikes me as on the “a lot to pull off” side. I do think it’s ultimately wearable, though, and I’d love to see it used. I love the idea of [name]James[/name] nickname [name]Jago[/name].

[name]Bodhi[/name] - I don’t see the appeal to be honest - it feels trendy, hard to spell…I don’t think actual Buddhists and Hindus use this name, it feels like an odd cultural thing going on, to me. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Brody[/name]?

[name]Bardo[/name] - no. This makes me think immediately of [name]Brigitte[/name] [name]Bardot[/name], which is unfortunate for a boy. Also, kind of makes me think of [name]Marlon[/name] [name]Brando[/name], who is awesome but kind of tragic. However, I think [name]Bard[/name] could be really cool, especially as a middle name.

[name]Django[/name] - it’s hip, but no one will know how to spell it usually, and it makes me think of [name]Django[/name] Rinehart who was sort of a tragic figure. I also think people would mis-hear this a lot. [name]Jago[/name]'s similar and much preferable I think.

[name]Oz[/name] - I adore this as a nickname but it is not enough name for me. [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Osborne[/name], [name]Austin[/name], there are plenty of ways to get to it.

[name]Barnaby[/name] - I [name]LOVE[/name] this name, it strikes me as somewhat hard to wear (mainly because of the chance of [name]Barney[/name] nicknames?), but not awfully so. I think [name]Barnaby[/name] with a D middle name ([name]Desmond[/name]) would be a cool way to a [name]Bard[/name] or even [name]Bardo[/name] nickname.

[name]Brogan[/name] - It’s OK. It makes me think of brogue…and [name]Logan[/name]. I think people will probably hear [name]Logan[/name]. Seems to be setting him up for the nickname “bro”, which is not the worst thing but maybe not ideal.

[name]Do[/name] you like: [name]Donovan[/name], [name]Milo[/name], [name]Brody[/name]?

Girls:

[name]Fionnuala[/name] ([name]Ula[/name]) - Gorgeous name that I love. It is a handful to spell but if you’re OK with that, OK. I do think [name]Fiona[/name] is more wearable if you’ll consider it.

[name]Saoirse[/name] - I love this name, again the spelling however and also I know it has a lot of political connotations in [name]Ireland[/name], I mean that’s fine, just be sure you’re aware of it before you go with it. I think [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Saoirse[/name] is just a gorgeous combo…[name]Fionnuala[/name] [name]Saoirse[/name] too.

[name]Maeve[/name] - I really love [name]Maeve[/name] and think it’s a solid pick. I think it’s an especially nice touch since you’ll probably learn more in [name]May[/name]? I trust you know the meaning that’s often given for it (“intoxicating”) and are OK with that as it’s a little odd. I wouldn’t mind at all, but I know some people have commented on that.

[name]Lola[/name] - adore [name]Lola[/name]. Great option.

[name]Tallulah[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name]) - Normally a bit much for me (although it’s gorgeous), but here again there’s something similar with [name]Desmond[/name] - the name has Irish, African American, Native American [name]Indian[/name], and alternative/pop culture ([name]Tori[/name] [name]Amos[/name]) associations, I think again that’s kind of cool. And I love the nickname [name]Lulu[/name] and also [name]Lula[/name] if you like that (since you like [name]Lola[/name]). I know I’ve seen on some boards some spellings are “more Irish”, if that matters to you. I think this is the most common spelling here, I do think the name has mild spelling issues but not so strongly.

[name]Brigid[/name] - I love this name too, if you’ll consider [name]Bridget[/name] I think it will save her a lot of spelling woes, but if you want [name]Brigid[/name] that’s perfectly reasonable.

[name]Lux[/name] - sorry, this name feels a bit too much to me.

[name]Jemima[/name] - I adore this name. In the US it still strikes me as hard to pull off though - I just think “like the syrup?” will be a comment that will get annoying. If you want to, good for you, this name needs to get used here as it’s gorgeous, but honestly I’m just a little wary of it here even though I love it. Maybe try it out on people and see if you get that reaction, I might be wrong.

[name]Gypsy[/name] - I agree with pp, this is too much.

[name]Hero[/name] - also too much. Seems masculine, makes me think of sandwiches and heroin. I know it has mythological and Shakespearean roots that are great, but please consider it more for a middle. I read a thread on here where someone used it for a daughter and got so tired of all the comments on the masculine sound, sandwiches, and heroin. See, I would never say those non-Shakespearean associations to a parent, but plenty of people are not so tactful apparently.

[name]Delilah[/name] - I love its sound, but am not personally fully over the bad girl associations (and I’m sure I’m not alone). But, if you are over it, it’s a very nice name and clearly most people are over it as it’s rising in popularity. [name]Lila[/name] is solid too.

[name]Dylan[/name] - this is the only male / uni name you’re suggesting for girls, so I’d encourage you to think if you really like it that strongly since it’s not your clear style. I think this would be great on a boy for you. It’s a perfectly nice name for a girl, but be prepared that people may read her name and expect to meet an Irish-looking boy or man. Nothing wrong with going against people’s expectations that much if you want to, and are also prepared to raise her to understand it, but it might also be a lot of work if this isn’t your very favorite name.

[name]Do[/name] you like [name]Imogen[/name] or [name]Cordelia[/name]? Shakespearean like [name]Hero[/name] with some Gaelic connections but also other connections, and lovely.

All best and good luck!

I like the idea of [name]Desmond[/name] and [name]Barnaby[/name] for a boy, or [name]Lola[/name] or [name]Jemima[/name] for a girl. Not all of them are strictly Irish (the only one with Gaelic history at all is [name]Desmond[/name], I think), but I can see it fitting your criteria and still working well on a little Korean child.

Good luck!

From your lists I like:
Boys:
[name]Bram[/name] - I like this as a nn for [name]Bertram[/name], [name]Abram[/name]/[name]Abraham[/name], or just by itself. It’s short, spunky, and strong sounding which I love.
[name]Indigo[/name] - I disagree that this is too much name for a child. It’s not that long and doesn’t have an overwhelming meaning, I think it’s fine.
[name]Moses[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the connotation of the biblical [name]Moses[/name] story here! Plus [name]Mo[/name] is just an adorable NN.
[name]Bodhi[/name] - I don’t know why, but I just love this name.
[name]Django[/name] - Again, I don’t know why I love it, I just do. Other than the spelling issue, I think it’s gorgeous.

Top two for you: [name]Bram[/name] and [name]Moses[/name], with [name]Django[/name] a close third.

Girls:
[name]Lola[/name] - Super cute, maybe a little insubstantial but I love the idea of it.
[name]Tallulah[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name]) - [name]Love[/name]!
[name]Lux[/name] - I like the meaning, I like that it’s short and easy to say/spell, and I love that it feels very glamorous but still strong.
[name]Brigid[/name] - I agree with the pp who said [name]Bridget[/name] might be less of a headache, but I know too [name]Brigid[/name]'s and they don’t have too many issues.
[name]Delilah[/name] - I like this for you, and it has a sweet nickname ([name]Lila[/name]).

Top two for you: [name]Lux[/name] and [name]Tallulah[/name], [name]Brigid[/name] in third.

Are you planning on keeping your baby’s original, Korean name at all (as a middle or second middle)? Or giving him/her a completely new name? I think either way is fine, but if you are considering keeping his/her name as a middle maybe you could wait until you get more information about him/her and see which names fit the baby and sound best with his/her Korean name. Good luck and congrats on adopting!

From your list, I would pick [name]Bram[/name] or [name]Jago[/name] and [name]Maeve[/name] or [name]Tallulah[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name]).

[name]Bram[/name] has always been a favorite of mine as a nn to [name]Abram[/name]. I’m really starting to like [name]Tallulah[/name] a lot too.

My favorites from your list are:
Boys:
[name]Indigo[/name]
[name]Moses[/name]
[name]Bodhi[/name]

Girls:
[name]Lola[/name]
[name]Lux[/name]
I would like to suggest either [name]Gem[/name] or [name]Gemma[/name] to add to your girls list

I love love love [name]Bodhi[/name] and for some reason it stands out to me as being the most appropriate for a Korean boy as opposed to something like [name]Desmond[/name] or [name]Barnaby[/name]. [name]Bodhi[/name] has a really cool, laid back vibe and the cute nn of [name]Bo[/name]. For a girl I love [name]Dylan[/name], [name]Delilah[/name] and [name]Maeve[/name]. [name]Bodhi[/name] and [name]Dylan[/name] or [name]Bodhi[/name] and [name]Delilah[/name] would be a great brother and sister set! I think [name]Fionnuala[/name] sounds extremely Irish for a person who will have Korean features. [name]Rocket[/name], [name]Lux[/name], [name]Hero[/name] and [name]Gypsy[/name] are just way to much, I think there would be teasing potential. Have you looked into Korean names for your child? Or maybe even for a middle name?

Out of the names you listed, I like:

[name]Colm[/name]
[name]Desmond[/name] ([name]Des[/name])
[name]Bram[/name]
[name]Moses[/name]

Girls:
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Lola[/name]
[name]Brigid[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]

I also second the suggestion of [name]Gemma[/name]. It has a similar sound to [name]Jemima[/name], but without the social stigma.

I really wouldn’t worry too much about using an Irish name on a Korean child. Most people’s name don’t match their heritage these days anyway.

I love [name]Desmond[/name] ([name]Des[/name]), [name]Bram[/name], [name]Moses[/name], [name]Jago[/name], and [name]Django[/name] for a little boy. For a girl, I love [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Lola[/name], [name]Tallulah[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name]), [name]Jemima[/name], and [name]Delilah[/name]. I know everyone else thinks of syrup when they hear [name]Jemima[/name], but I think of [name]Jemima[/name] Puddle-Duck, the [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] character. It’s charming and soft and frilly.

I literally agree with everything jesba said. Favorites for boys: [name]Moses[/name] and [name]Desmond[/name]. Favorites for girls: [name]Jemima[/name] and [name]Dylan[/name], although I also see “[name]Gemma[/name]” as a more wearable name in the states.

[name]Desmond[/name] and [name]Maeve[/name] GMV from your list.

Congrats! Many well wishes on your upcoming adoption. To share some of my background with you, my sister was adopted from South Korea in the 1970s. She has an “American” first name given to her by our parents. Our parents kept her Korean middle name as a tribute to her heritage. We have a very typically Jewish last name. She did have some teasing, but much more often, confused looks from people when they heard her name and then met her face-to-face. I’d like to think that people are much more accepting and understanding of adoption than 35 years ago. Most importantly, as you know, is that your child and their name are filled with love and it sounds to me like you guys are bringing that to the table in spades.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Congratulations!! [name]How[/name] exciting you get to meet your [name]Babe[/name] so soon, after what sounds like a very long and no doubt tough journey for all.

Sorry to hear you are feeling a bit disillusioned about the naming process… but that maybe just means you haven’t found the ‘right’ one yet? I always get a bit of a thrill when I stumble upon a new favourite… it will come to you!

From your list my favourties are [name]Bram[/name] and [name]Lola[/name]. I adore both these names.

Here are some other suggestions that might work for a Korean/Irish/American child, as a middle name for a nod to their Korean heritage

GIRLS
[name]Bae[/name] (this is actually my daughters name but we spell it [name]Bay[/name]- could be used for boy or girl. Means ‘inspiration’ in Korean)
[name]Min[/name] (means ‘greatness’ in Korean. You could use longer version like [name]Mina[/name] or [name]Minne[/name] or [name]Minette[/name] with nn [name]Min[/name])
[name]Hana[/name] (Easy to anglesize- meaning ‘flower’ in Korean)
[name]Sun[/name] (beautiful and bright middle name)

BOYS
[name]Jae[/name] (means ‘respect’ in korean)
Hanuel (means ‘sky’
[name]Dae[/name] (means 'greatness" very cute as middle name)
[name]Sam[/name] (meaning 3rd but whatevs
Isuel (could also be for a girl meaning dew)

My favourite Irish names for boys are Ailbe, [name]Cormac[/name], [name]Casey[/name] or [name]Ennis[/name] ([name]Innes[/name]) for a boy… and I love [name]Nola[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Wynne[/name] or [name]Sabia[/name] for a girl.

Goodluck!

I like [name]Bram[/name] for a boy and [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Talullah[/name], and [name]Brigid[/name] for a girl. Good luck and congrats on your adoption!

Congradulations!

[name]Desmond[/name] ([name]Des[/name]) - I never liked this but then I met someone with the name and it grew on me
[name]Bram[/name] - not crazy about this either
[name]Indigo[/name] - I like it but I think I’d prefer it for a girl

[name]Moses[/name] - nice name
[name]Jago[/name] - interesting and new, I like it
[name]Bodhi[/name] - I really like this
[name]Bardo[/name] - just nuetral, no positive or negative associations for me
[name]Django[/name] - probably too hard for a child to say
[name]Oz[/name] - I like it as a nickname but not a full name
[name]Barnaby[/name] - not crazy about this
[name]Brogan[/name] - I like it

Girls:

[name]Fionnuala[/name] ([name]Ula[/name]) - too much of a mouthful
[name]Saoirse[/name] - not sure how to pronounce it but if it’s how I think it is I like it
[name]Maeve[/name] - not my favorite but I don’t dislike it
[name]Lola[/name] - I like it better as a nickname
[name]Tallulah[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name]) - I like it
[name]Brigid[/name] - great name, also love [name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Lux[/name] - cute, I like it
[name]Jemima[/name] - I love it
[name]Gypsy[/name] - not crazy about it
[name]Hero[/name] - I like it but I think it’s better for a boy
[name]Delilah[/name] - love it!
[name]Dylan[/name] - I like it and even more for a boy

Yikes it was like jesba was reading my mind or something; I agree with almost everything she said! Also like pp’s suggestion of [name]Gemma[/name] for a little gem of a girl. [name]Will[/name] also just add my nix to [name]Bardo[/name] on a boy.

Ideas…

[name]Indigo[/name] [name]Desmond[/name] nn [name]Indy[/name]
[name]Jago[/name] [name]Abram[/name]
[name]Barnaby[/name] [name]Osmund[/name]
[name]Boone[/name] [name]Malachy[/name]
[name]Dexter[/name] [name]Moses[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name] [name]Cyrus[/name]

[name]Tallulah[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Jemima[/name] [name]Lux[/name]
[name]Journey[/name] Finnula ([name]Journey[/name] instead of [name]Gypsy[/name], honors her path to you?)
[name]Delilah[/name] [name]Dove[/name]
[name]Lotus[/name] [name]Aveline[/name] nn [name]Lola[/name]
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]

I love that you are thinking outside the box on names - you have good ideas so don’t worry -and congratulations on the upcoming marvel of adoption and parenthood!

The only ones I don’t think will work are:
[name]Moses[/name]
[name]Bardo[/name]
Girls:
Finnoula

My favs are
Tululah
[name]Gypsy[/name]
[name]Desmond[/name]
[name]Indigo[/name]

GGC also introduced me to [name]Boheme[/name] which means almost the same as gypsy

Good luck
