Do William and Callum sound too similar?

We still don’t know yet what were having, only 11 weeks along at this point. Last night DH said he think we should start a boys name list (YAY! Although I’m convinced it’s a girl.) He wants to put [name_m]William[/name_m] on the list because it is his grandfather’s name. [name_f]Do[/name_f] [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_m]Callum[/name_m] sound too alike? Are they hard to say together? Thanks for your input!

I think they’re too close for brothers, sorry. The double l sound, the -um ending, I just wouldn’t do it. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]William[/name_m] as a middle name if it means a lot to your husband to use it? Looking at your signature, [name_m]Callum[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_u]Chase[/name_u] [name_m]William[/name_m] or [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]William[/name_m] would all make fantastic brother sets.

I love them together! I don’t find them too close at all.

I love [name_m]William[/name_m] and I think [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_m]Callum[/name_m] go nicely together. They have different sounding phonetics and differing numbers of syllables, so I think it works fine!

It depends. Are you a person who doesn’t mind themes, alliteration, or sound-alike sibling names in general? If so, they’re fine together.
I’m a person who avoids themed sets like the plague, partly because I feel they can cut into a person’s sense of individuality and partly because I wouldn’t want to lock myself in to something I can’t maintain.

[name_m]Callum[/name_m] and [name_m]William[/name_m] are very very close, and if you had a third, you’d need something that fits the trend. [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m]? I’d assume the parents ran out of ideas. [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] would fit the pattern more closely.

They don’t look “too close” on the page, but when I say them out loud, they feel much much closer.

@yellow - That is a good point, I also tend to shy away from alliteration and the like.
@essjay - Good idea for using as a middle, and I think DH would go for that too!

Thanks everyone who responded!

I agree with essjay. I wouldn’t use both for brothers.

I think they sound lovely together x

I’d put [name_m]William[/name_m] in the middle spot.

I must pronounce one or both of these names differently than you do. To me both are 2 syllables and end in the -um sound. I think that this makes them too similar for siblings.

I agree. I think some of the disconnect here is that some people pronounce [name_m]William[/name_m] wel-lee-am and others pronounce it will-yum (more like [name_m]Willem[/name_m]). Whereas [name_m]Callum[/name_m] is much more clipped–almost one syllable in some accents cal-um. The way [name_m]Liam[/name_m] sometime sounds like [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-um and sometimes sounds more like leam.

So saying all that, I think it would depend on where you live and how closely the names sound in your accent. It would be out of the question for me, like naming kids [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f], but it’s clearly not as much of a problem in many places. It would also depend on whether you’re planning to use their full names.
