So, we originally decided for twin B’s name to be [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. We love that name, and her biological mom likes it as well. Recently some people have mentioned that others might connect it with the street name for methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy).
So, when you hear [name_f]Molly[/name_f], does your brain go to the drug?
PLEASE be honest with me. This is important, as I don’t want my daughter to have a name that others connect to a drug.
I’ve never heard of it. Perhaps it’s because I’ve got nothing to do with that sect of society or perhaps because I’m English (thus maybe my opinion doesn’t apply)…
It’s a classic nickname with far more positive associations than drugs, imo. And from what I’ve seen, there are hundreds of different code names for drugs so, even if it is a street name, it wouldn’t be strongly linked in the same way [name_m]Adolf[/name_m] is linked to Hitler, if you get my meaning. Anyhow, I’m sure once little [name_f]Molly[/name_f] comes along, they’ll have a far more positive associations than ecstasy
Not usually. I have noticed that when it’s paired with another word name (like in “[name_f]Sunday[/name_f] [name_f]Molly[/name_f]” on the homepage) I think of the drug. But [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [non-word name] or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] by itself? Totally fine.
I’m familiar with molly as slang for ecstasy, but I don’t find the association overly strong. I think you’re fine, and slang changes so quickly anyway that this particular usage probably won’t last long.
That’s so funny, I’ve always pictured the term spelled “mali” in my head (I’m in my thirties so it was just plain old “E” when we were younger, and I’ve only heard the new slang within the past few years). I never associated it with the name [name_f]Molly[/name_f], and I still wouldn’t. I wouldn’t worry. Like the previous posts have pointed out, within a few years it will be something entirely different!
I think this will be a stronger association for the younger set. I grew up knowing people with the name so that’s my main association but I’m not sure with the young ones. It is still pretty popular as a name though #90 so I think the kids will still think of it as a name. There might be teasing though, so I don’t know how you feel about that.
Not at all. [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name! [name_f]My[/name_f] best friend growing up was named [name_f]Molly[/name_f], so it has lots of great memories for me. It’s on my list too. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t overthink it.
I think of [name_f]Molly[/name_f] Weasley, which is one of my all-time favorite literary characters. Unless you regularly deal with drug dealers, I think you’re safe.
Actually, [name_f]Molly[/name_f] refers to MDMA, which is similar to ecstasy. As a college student, I hear [name_f]Molly[/name_f] tossed around a lot. HOWEVER, I hear it a lot less than I used to. I believe this is in part due to an effort by media, especially magazines with teen audiences, to make potential users aware of the risks of [name_f]Molly[/name_f] (it’s laced with anything and everything, and, when laced with bad combinations, can be lethal.) The effort has been successful, and the drug has become a passing fad. By the time your Molly would be in school, the drug will be a thing of the past.
As a college student NAMED [name_f]Molly[/name_f], I haven’t been teased about the drug anyway.
I have heard that it can be associated with a type of drug, but it certainly isn’t the first thing that comes to mind (or the second, third, and so on). I think of the spunky [name_f]Molly[/name_f] from American Girl.
