DH and I love the name [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], but I was bummed to see it’s #147. That’s much higher up on the list than we prefer! Our daughters’ names are [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f].
Only thing is, I have never met a single young child or baby named [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (but I’ve met a lot of Georgias, a name that is a 100+ spots lower).
What do you think? Would you consider the name [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] to be popular? “Not heard very often” is important to us.
ETA: middle names we are considering for Ivy are: Cordelia, Seraphina, Clementine, Ramona, Cecilia, Louisa.
I think it’s fine. I have only met one [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and she was a lovely girl, the name was a shock to see so I can say it’s anything but! #147 isn’t popular at all if you think about it. For example, [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is a really popular name, yet I know 0. See what I mean? I think [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] are lovely.
I don’t know anyone young named [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. I think it’s more on people’s radar because of the character on Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] and similarity to [name_f]Isla[/name_f], but I don’t know that it’s popular. It seems more similar to [name_f]Willa[/name_f] than [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] within your sibset. If you love it, you should use it!
I have never met an [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. So I don’t think it is popular. I have heard of the name. It is a name that is a “this is a name” kind of name. But i dont think it is common at all. It is just a name type of name. You have heard of the name but dont know a lot of people name that. Thats how i think of the name.
If you’re concerned with popularity, then it’s important not to think just of where the name is currently ranked (or how many people you’ve met in real life by that name as the pp have), but also the direction of travel. If you’re based in the US, it’s well worth checking out the Name Voyager at http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=ivy&sw=f&exact=false. You can [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is fast-rising and may be on course to crack the top 100. It’s #66 in the UK already.
I certainly wouldn’t consider it popular, but I have known a handful, and no [name_f]Willa[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]'s.
I don’t think its popular enough not to use. Your daughter will likely be the only [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] in her class, and possibly her school.
I should also note I live in an area with a very large [name_f]Asian[/name_f] minority, and 4 of the [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]'s I know are [name_f]Asian[/name_f] girls in their 20s (one is a white girl the same age). I don’t know if it’s as popular with other demographics.
I wouldn’t worry about its popularity. It’s unlikely to make a big jump soon, I believe it’s held steadily around that spot for a long time.
I have only ever known one [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. I don’t think its common, it is very cool and I think its rising to popularity. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] are very nice, I like the name [name_f]Freya[/name_f] with those two! Something to consider!
I love [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. And I don’t know any. It really depends on where you live [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. Like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is really far down on the list and i know of 4 under one that live near me. If it doesn’t seem popular where you are I say go for it.
I have never met an [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], and I think it fits perfectly with your other girls. I think it really depends on where you live though. Here, I have met no [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], but 2 [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] (1 is 10, the other 16)
I don’t know about in the US, but I’ve certainly never come across an [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] in [name_m]Britain[/name_m]. I hadn’t even heard of the name until I came across it on Nameberry. And by the way, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]!
I don’t consider anything outside of the top 20 as “overly popular” and even then I don’t mind that much. I don’t really understand what’s so bad about having a popular name - it won’t get spelled wrong that frequently and kids like to bond over sharing a name. A lot of people really don’t overthink that stuff. I really don’t think you should worry over [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] being #146. I think it might rise more but I don’t think it’ll become the next [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. I could see it getting to the same spot as names like [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are right now (somewhere between #50 and #100). If you don’t know any young [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]'s in your area I think it’s safe to go for it.
I only know two [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]'s ones 17 the other is 2 months old. It’s top 100 in Australia (so’s [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]). I don’t really consider it too popular and it works well with [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f].
I love your names [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]. So lovely.
To me [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is a lot more popular than either [name_f]Willa[/name_f] or [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], but I much prefer it to [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]. If you like [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] go with it. Also [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is lovely, but you may prefer the original [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling of Heloïse.
One of my coworkers has a three year old [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. But thats the only [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] young or old that I’ve personally come across.
I think its lovely. Yes, [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is more popular than [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], but it’s not SUPER popular. Its not like your little [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] will encounter 5 other [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]'s in her class. And I think it does work well with [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]. They all have a vintage charm to them.
I’ve never met an [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. Have you looked at the top 100 names in your state? If [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] isn’t there I don’t think you should worry.
Popularity is so strange. I personally know TWO boys named Diem, but less than 5 children in the entire USA were named that in 2014! I know two babies named [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] (not in the top 1000). I know zero persons under the age of 30 named [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] (#23) and only one named [name_m]Liam[/name_m] (#2). With social media we are way more aware of what people outside our personal circles are named and that makes a lot of names feel way more popular than they are, in reality.
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is a lovely name. It doesn’t feel incredibly unique (people have heard it before and won’t be shocked by it) but it’s certainly not ubiquitous. I agree that 147 feels a little high. It’s climbed a lot in the last few years which might mean it’s likely to get more popular in the next few years. I prefer [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] to [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] as it seems like a little bit more of a “serious” name, but that’s just a style preference and not universal. Best of luck!
