Do you have an unusual name?

Hello,

Was just wondering if there was anyone else on here with an unusual name? [name]Do[/name] you know the origin of it? Did you find it limiting in anyway growing up/now? Did you resort to a nickname to make it more user friendly? Spelling or pronunciation issues? [name]Do[/name] you like it? Did you like it as a child? Would you give your child an unusual name?

Here’s me!: My name is Evalda (eh-[name]VAL[/name]-da) - I don’t know anyone else with the name or even what it means(!) although dad was brazilian so I’m assuming it came from there? I have pronunciation issues with it: ee-val-da mainly but some people try saying [name]Eva[/name] then get stuck! I resorted to nickname [name]Val[/name] which has stuck although I tried [name]Evie[/name] (eh-vie) for a while but of course that came out ee-vie anyway! I do love my full name now (although am stuck as [name]Val[/name] now…) but it was irritating to have to correct people all the time as a child. I try to avoid names which are difficult to pronounce or spell for my children - although I do also try to avoid the really popular ones.

Thanks [name]Val[/name] x

Hey [name]VAL[/name],

My name is [name]Meryl[/name]. I was the only one with that name at all my school, jobs ect. Sometimes when I meet people they will say my grandpa/grandma/great aunt has your name. My dad chose all our names starting with M. He chose [name]Meryl[/name] just because he liked the way it look and sounded. If I were a boy my name would still be [name]Meryl[/name]. I lived In Mexico and Spain in my childhood and the latins could NOT say my name so I went by my middle name [name]Anne[/name]. I like having an unusual name and don’t mind that it is misspelled and mispronounced sometimes. The only complaint I have is that my name was not super feminine I always wanted to be a [name]Lily[/name] or [name]Rose[/name] something delicate. It was very important to me to give my children unusual, but not made up names.

[name]Hi[/name] & yes I do!
My first name is Tyreena, pronounced exactly as its spelt.
My dad made it up…well he thought he did! Its actually quite popular in the Caribbean. He also made up the meaning which is “A princess singing & dancing from her castle”, pretty cool ah?! The funny thing is my whole childhood I spent singing & dancing & went into performing arts as an adult! The power of a name!
I’ve always loved having an unusual name. i have meet a couple of people with similar sounding names, but no one with exactly the same name & spelling. People do often pronounce it incorrectly but this has never bothered me.
I love my name & hope that maybe one day someone else will hear it & choose it (with its beautiful meaning!) for their precious wee girl!

I guess it depends. My name is [name]Linnea[/name], which is rather unusual where I live now. But it is very common in [name]Sweden[/name] where I was born, but not in my age group though. I have lived in [name]France[/name] and Spain too and I have never met anyone with my name there.

My name [name]Kailee[/name] isn’t unusual now, but it certainly was when I was growing up in the 1980s! Nowadays, when I hear someone say, “[name]Kailee[/name]!” I turn around and usually see a mother calling after her young daughter!

The spelling is something that people NEVER get correct. But, you just can’t get upset with it. There are so many variations of [name]Kailee[/name] out there, and mine happens to be one of the more unusual. That being said, I love my name. I don’t get bothered by the occasional mispronunciation ([name]Ky[/name]-lee instead of [name]Kay[/name]-lee) or misspellings. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my name and its spelling, so I quite like having a less popular name!

My name is [name]Maggie[/name], which isn’t unusual but the circumstances surrounding are.
My name is actually [name]Helen[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] and I just go by [name]Maggie[/name]. My mom always wanted a [name]Maggie[/name] but she thought [name]Helen[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] sounded better than [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Helen[/name], so I just have to explain to every person I meet that I like to be called [name]Maggie[/name]. It can be annoying sometimes but I love my name!

My name, [name]Jade[/name], is uncommon but I wouldn’t call it unusual. I have met two girls named [name]Jade[/name] and one boy. I’ve never really used a nickname, sometimes go as [name]Jade[/name] [name]Diana[/name] but that’s it. I have always loved having a name that is a little different.

My sister’s name is a bit more unique, [name]Brogan[/name]. My mom wanted a Celtic name and found [name]Brogan[/name]. Since she and my father couldn’t find a girl’s name they both liked they decided to use [name]Brogan[/name] either way. And here she is! She went through a phase where she hated her name for being to masculine and tried to get people to call her by her MN, [name]Marita[/name], but now loves it because it is so unique. There was a reality show on recently surrounding a girl named [name]Brogan[/name]. [name]Brogan[/name] was excited for about five seconds that she wasn’t the only one and then started getting really annoyed that the people on tv kept using “her” name and she didn’t like it. We have met one other girl named [name]Brogan[/name] around my sister’s age in the area (which I guess shouldn’t be all that surprising since there are a lot of Irish families in the area) and one boy, also in the 17-20 age range.

My name is [name]Celeste[/name], which, though it seems to be gaining in popularity, is still fairly unusual (I think). I never met another [name]Celeste[/name] until high school, and I didn’t like my name growing up. I wanted to be a [name]Stephanie[/name] or [name]Jennifer[/name] or something more popular because people have always had trouble spelling or pronouncing my name. I got called “[name]Chelsea[/name]” a lot, and I still do sometimes. I don’t understand how you get [name]Chelsea[/name] from [name]Celeste[/name], but oh well!

I thought maybe I could respond cryptically because I’m not comfortable sharing my name.

I have a name that was nearly unheard of growing up, but it’s become more popular for the current generation (similar to [name]Kailee[/name]'s situation). It is sanskrit in origin, though I’m as caucasian as they come! In fact, now that I’m married and have taken my husband’s Japanese last name, most often people who see my name written before meeting me expect me to be of [name]Indian[/name] or east [name]Asian[/name] descent instead of the redheaded scottish girl I am :stuck_out_tongue:

There is a name that’s identical in pronunciation to mine, but a different spelling, that’s of Greek origin. I really wish my parents had chosen that spelling instead, both for aesthetic reasons and because its origin is closer to my obvious ethnic background.

No nickname because it’s short enough already, in fact, since it ends in an “ee” sound people often ask if it’s short for something. It’s made me want to give a nicknameable name to my kids, I always hated having to say “no” to that question, and then feeling inferior because my name doesn’t sound complete as-is.

[name]Even[/name] so, I really loved having an unusual name as a kid. When I was little I hated never being able to buy those stupid souvenirs they print all the most common names on and buy at gift shops, but that’s a pretty silly concern. I admit I felt a little bad for all the Katies, Sarahs and Melissas in my classes and activities that had to tack on their last initial to distinguish themselves. I felt my uncommon name added to my individuality.

That makes me definitely care about giving my children uncommon names. I don’t want a [name]Sophie[/name] M., I hope my child(ren) will be the only one with their name - at least in most situations, if not all.

Hello! I have an unusual (well, less commonly seen) spelling of a common name: [name]Elinor[/name]. No pronounciation problems at all but so many spelling problems ([name]Eleanor[/name]…etc)! I had the worst of both worlds… I was still one of 3 Eleanors in sound but people couldn’t spell it either! Although, it never really bothered me and I have always loved my name. Having said that my kids all have easily spelled, instantly recognisable names ([name]Lucy[/name], [name]Peter[/name], [name]Joseph[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name]…), but that’s probably a naming style preference on my part.

I love the spelling [name]Elinor[/name]! So streamlined and sleek.
