Do you know anyone with a hyphenated names?

Im wondering after seeing several first name combos that contain a hyphen. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know anyone with one? [name_f]Do[/name_f] they go by both names?

Personally [name_m]Ive[/name_m] never met anyone with a hyphen in their first name although [name_m]Ive[/name_m] known several people who go by their first + middle name. ( [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], for example) Is it more common than I appreciate?
I live in the US, maybe its more common in other places…

I’m from the UK and I’ve known a few, including my sister and my cousin. All bar one have gone by the first name only, and the one who goes by both is only 5 years old so, time will tell!

I know a few people with double names but I’m not sure if any of them use a hyphen. I’ve noticed that a lot of the [name_f]Emily[/name_f] Anns and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Graces from elementary school are now “just [name_f]Emily[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Grace[/name_f].” I know two or three people (both genders) who have a double name with [name_m]Boone[/name_m] (could be because its historical in my area, could be the parents know each other, not sure) and they’ve all kept [name_m]Boone[/name_m], even if they don’t go by it every day it’s still their formal name for social media or school.
ETA: I’m in the US if [name_m]Boone[/name_m] wasn’t enough of an indicator

Hyphen, no.
Double-barrel, yes.

I knew someone called [name_u]Angel[/name_u] [name_f]Isla[/name_f] (she had a middle name too) who went by [name_u]Angel[/name_u] [name_f]Isla[/name_f] mostly but then chose to be just [name_u]Angel[/name_u] by the time we got to our late teens

That’s funny you mention [name_m]Boone[/name_m] since I have a friend who I call “Firstname”boone as a sort of smooshname but Im the only one who calls them that :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I know an [name_f]Anna[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] whose parents named her fn [name_f]Anna[/name_f] mn [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and she decided to hyphenate it herself, but I don’t think I know anyone who was given a hyphen at birth. I’m in the US

I’m in the US and can think of one I know. She’s an [name_u]Anne[/name_u]-[name_u]Marie[/name_u] who always go by both in full.

I can think of three!

Ruby-[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f], and [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_u]Jay[/name_u]. All 3 of them go by their full, hyphenated names, rather than a nickname.

This is all in [name_u]New[/name_u] Zealand.

I only know one, a guy named [name_u]Nile[/name_u]-[name_m]Job[/name_m]. He mainly goes by [name_m]Job[/name_m] (pronounced joeb)

I’m from the US

I know people who go by first and middle, like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. They’re usually older though

I know tons I know several [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f]’s, a [name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]-[name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]-[name_u]Blu[/name_u], [name_f]Evie[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Peyton[/name_u]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Carla[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_m]Ritchie[/name_m]-[name_u]Ray[/name_u], [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]-[name_u]Jay[/name_u], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]-[name_u]Jay[/name_u], [name_m]Tommy[/name_m]-[name_u]Jay[/name_u] and [name_m]John[/name_m]-[name_m]Paul[/name_m]. Masses!

Mostly younger ([name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-[name_u]Rae[/name_u], [name_f]Ava[/name_f]-[name_f]Jade[/name_f], [name_f]Hollie[/name_f]-[name_u]Jay[/name_u], [name_f]Amber[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_m]Tommy[/name_m]-[name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]-[name_u]James[/name_u], etc. etc.) but I also went to school with [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]-[name_f]Jayne[/name_f], [name_f]Ana[/name_f]-[name_f]Lea[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-[name_u]Louise[/name_u], and I’ve known several older hyphenated name bearers too. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_u]Anne[/name_u]-[name_u]Marie[/name_u] seem to be the most popular for people over the age of about 30.

I’m in :uk: as well. Hyphenated names are currently given to about 1/5 or 1/6 (can’t remember the exact figure, but it’s a lot) of baby girls here, and a significant number of boys too.

I know sisters who all have hyphenated names, but they go by the first name only.

Otherwise, there are plenty of hyphenated names around here! I know at least three girls called [name_f]Luna[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], a few [name_f]Anna[/name_f]-[name_u]Maria[/name_u]/Anne-[name_u]Marie[/name_u]/Anna-[name_u]Marie[/name_u]’s and a few more interesting combinations such as [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]-[name_u]Rue[/name_u] or [name_f]Maia[/name_f]-[name_f]Eve[/name_f], mainly with younger children.
