Do you like Benedict?

Eggs [name]Benedict[/name] is my husband’s all-time favourite breakfast so we don’t mind that association too much  I certainly do know about [name]Benedict[/name] Cumberbatch, he went to my University!

When I hear [name]Benedict[/name], I think of [name]Benedict[/name] Cumberbatch, too! It’s a strong name, but with the cute nn “[name]Ben[/name]”. I think it goes very well with [name]Agatha[/name].

I do think [name]Benedict[/name] is a strong and handsome name and is a nice change from [name]Benjamin[/name], although I slightly prefer [name]Bennett[/name].

I love [name]Benedict[/name]! With the Catholic associations, plus eggs [name]Benedict[/name], and the actor [name]Benedict[/name] Cumberbatch (of BBC’s [name]Sherlock[/name] fame!), I think it’s even more usable in the US than some people realize, I think it’s great and it has a great meaning, and [name]Ben[/name] (and even [name]Ned[/name]/[name]Eddie[/name]) are cute nns. It’s my favorite [name]Ben[/name] name right now (narrowly beating out [name]Reuben[/name]!). I think [name]Agatha[/name] and [name]Benedict[/name] are lovely together.

Good luck!

[name]Benedict[/name] makes me think of eggs, sorry. Of course that could be because I haven’t eaten anything but a piece of cheese since dinner last night and I’m starving so anything will make me think of food. But honestly I don’t think that’s it. [name]Benedict[/name] immediately made me think of eggs.

I’m so pleased by all the positive feedback, thanks everyone. [name]Even[/name] the negative stuff isn’t too bad, [name]Benedict[/name] is definitely in our top three now! I cannot believe how hard it is to find “the” boys’ name.

Funny, as an American I didn’t make the [name]Benedict[/name] [name]Arnold[/name] connection at all. I don’t think it’s really on people’s radars now days. Actually I am also a [name]Sherlock[/name] fan just like a pp, and made that connection right away with the actor [name]Benedict[/name] Cumberbatch. Anyway, I really like it. I also like the nn Beney/Bene. [name]Benedict[/name] and [name]Agatha[/name] are a fabulous sib set. ([name]Love[/name] [name]Agatha[/name]!) [name]Aggie[/name] and Beney/Bene are cute rhyming nn too. You’ve got a winner

Yay! Thanks [name]Amanda[/name].

I also think of eggs benedict. [name]Benedict[/name] is great brother name to [name]Agatha[/name] though.

It is cute, but I think of the eggs and the person, though I do live in the states and that doesn’t matter anywhere else. The egg connection may matter in other places though, if they have that in Australia. Anyway, it is a cute name that will hopefully outlive it’s bad associations sometimes soon.

We do have eggs [name]Benedict[/name] in Australia but I think even if people do make the connection it’s not a horrid one and [name]Benedict[/name] is still a name in its own right. It’s not like calling a kid “Scambled” or something

I don’t really like it, only because it automatically makes me think of Egg’s [name]Benedict[/name]. Which just happens to be a delicious breakfast, which in my mind is something a little odd to name a child. I prefer [name]Benjamin[/name] over [name]Benedict[/name]. However, that is only my opinion and if you really love the name then you should stick to it.

I completely understand the eggs connection but the name [name]Benedict[/name] first appeared in the 6th century and has been in use as a name in English speaking countries since 12th century so it’s very well established as a name in its own right. The egg definitely came second in this instance!

I like the name as far as patina of antiquity, I just sort of put it in the box with [name]Evangeline[/name] and [name]Christabel[/name] and ones like that, that wouldn’t work culturally for my family, several steps beyond other saint’s names like [name]Agatha[/name] or [name]Katherine[/name] or what-have-you. I don’t know if other people would feel that way about them though.

I do not think of eggs if that’s any comfort.

Thanks for all the responses. DH and I have been talking again tonight and [name]Benedict[/name] has dropped to number three on our list! It sounds so wonderful on paper but I’m not sure if I can picture myself shouting “[name]Benedict[/name]” across the park. Plus I’m starting to worry about the nephew-named-[name]Ben[/name] thing. [name]Will[/name] think on it some more…

Have you asked your sister how she feels? I know your parents said they think it’s OK and I know they live far away. If they’re OK then I’d not worry about that. Perhaps especially if you would consider [name]Ned[/name] or [name]Eddie[/name]? My cousin and I had the same name growing up and we were far apart and it was fine, although she was also further removed (like a 2nd cousin - not my mother’s sister’s kid).

It’s my brother and we haven’t discussed names but I know he wouldn’t be bothered. His [name]Ben[/name] is 12 so it’s not even like they’d play together. It’s just me being a worrier I think! I like [name]Ned[/name] as a nn.
