Have you ever really loved a name that everybody hates? I mean, the kind of name you actually plan on using on your child? [name]One[/name] of those names you cringe telling people, because you fear their reaction?
Sigh… For me it is [name]Rowan[/name] on a girl. We plan on naming our daughter that if she is born with red hair. The first time I ever heard the name it was on a girl and I have never actually met any boys/men with the name, so in my mind it is easily a good and true unisex name. Whenever we express interest in the name people say it is a boys name and that it is too masculine for a girl. Anyway, it makes me sad. On top of that, our second choice for a girl is Allaina (hubby’s name is Allain) and people don’t like that one either. We can’t win. End Rant.
I don’t mind [name]Rowan[/name] on a girl, but it is definitely more a boys name than girls in the UK and people would definitely still raise an eyebrow over a female [name]Rowan[/name]. However, as a nature name I see it working on a girl and prefer seeing this than things such as [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Avery[/name], [name]Ryan[/name] etc.
[name]Jemima[/name] is the one that people always question on here!
Considering [name]Rowan[/name] was a top 3 girl name in the [name]Berry[/name] awards yesterday, I think you’ve found your space You’d probably get better reactions on [name]Elena[/name] than Allaina, but hey, if its the name you love.
I’m usually a fan of names that are pretty mainstream, so even if someone doesn’t like them, it’s very likely that someone else will. But I do love [name]Agnes[/name] for a girl. Granted, [name]Agnes[/name] gets a better reception on here than anywhere else, but still, the reactions against it are incredibly strong. I like that it has the same meaning as my mom’s name, and with the French pronunciation (ahn-YESS), I could use the nn [name]Annie[/name], and it’s just so vintage and unused these days! I think it’s fabulous. I really love [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Violet[/name] as a combo, too. I’m just not sure if it’s too unusual, and I honestly love the [name]AG[/name]-ness pronunciation, too, and if I used [name]AG[/name]-ness, could I still use [name]Annie[/name]? I like the French pronunciation in theory, but I don’t know that I’d ever use it. Still, I think [name]Agnes[/name] is gorgeous. Not sure I’d actually use it, though, even if it was more socially acceptable.
Other than that, I don’t know, really. I like [name]Parker[/name] and [name]Brady[/name] (guilty!) on girls, but I would never ever use them in a million years (even if more people used them there!). I [name]LOVE[/name] Madelief, too, but I’m not even going to attempt that because it’s just too unusual. I’m not sure there are any names I truly love and would like to use that get that many negative reviews.
I think I would [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Bentley[/name] for a boy if it weren’t so trashy, and I already [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Bailey[/name] for a boy, I guess that might be one. I want to use it, but comments from other people make me hesitant about using it. Although it is growing in my state for boys, so maybe one day.
I really like [name]Rowan[/name] for a girl! And coming from me that means something because generally I do not like unisex names.
My name I love that we were gonna use if it was a boy was [name]Amadeus[/name]. And yes I cringed thinking about telling ppl. However we are having a girl… our third girl… and last child ever. So I guess I don’t have to worry about it.
Éponine, [name]Clemency[/name] & [name]Liberty[/name]. They are all names both my boyfriend & I love, but everyone we’ve mentioned them to hates them. So we are not mentioning names anymore… it’s too sad.
I like quite a few names that everyone else hates, because I seem to fall in love with very unusual names from very different time periods. My #1 choice was like that until my mom and husband came around to it, and now they love it. They even love my second choice now. But I’m afraid of how others will react, and as much as I love my choices, I don’t think I’m brave enough to announce them proudly. My plan is to go to places where you get a takeout order and they have to call your name (like Starbucks) and see how they react, or how often they butcher the spelling and pronunciation.
For the record, I think Allaina and [name]Rowan[/name] are both awesome.
ChristinaMariane, your takeout idea is brilliant.
[name]One[/name] of my favorite names of all time is [name]Ginger[/name]. I think [name]Rowan[/name] is a great name for a redheaded girl! Then again, don’t listen to me. I love the name [name]Ginger[/name], so there goes my naming cred.
Sooo many! -ette names & 'dated’names & boys names on girls! And though I have found acceptance here people in the real world have a lot of hate for [name]Edna[/name], [name]Agnes[/name], [name]Lake[/name] & [name]Marigold[/name]…
I think that someone will always hate the names you’re considering but only total jerks will actually hate on a name once you’ve bestowed it! My daughter’s name got criticism when I was pregnant & shared our list…now those critics are full of compliments & I pretend I forgot what they said!!
No one understands my love of [name]Zoe[/name]. My fiancé hates it, my mom hates it… Sigh. I know it’s popular and maybe even a little trendy but I love it.
For me, its [name]Montana[/name] for a girl. I don’t know why, but I really like this name and no else seems to… I was considering using this but it got shot down by a lot of people.
I’ve never known anyone else that loves it… Other than [name]Prince[/name] lol
I can’t stand [name]Apple[/name] as a nickname. I’d probably use Lo, [name]Lola[/name] or [name]Nia[/name] as a nn for [name]Apollonia[/name].
You can tell by my sig that I do care what people think when it comes to names. [name]Reason[/name] being- first impressions are everything, whether it’s on a resume or college application or just a brief social interaction. So, I’d probably not use many names due to other people opinions.
Definitely! Lots of the names I love others hate. @emma, I laughed out loud, becuase I too am guilty of loving [name]Ginger[/name]
My name taste is all over the board (I think [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name] are great!), but two of my favourite girls names are [name]Bonnie[/name] and [name]Polly[/name]. So I’m not surprised if others disagree.
No one in my life cares for Athénaïs, some of them have told me they hate it and even on most name boards people don’t care for it but it doesn’t bother me because I love it!
I love, love, love the name [name]Liam[/name] because I always picture it on a friendly, likeable, easygoing guy (plus I love that it’s Irish). But on Nameberry everyone dismisses it because it’s so popular.
