Do you stay away from a name if a similar name is popular?

For instance, would you stay away from [name]Audrey[/name] because of the popularity of [name]Aubrey[/name] or stay away from [name]Callie[/name] because of the popularity of [name]Kaylee[/name]?

I love [name]Callie[/name]! I don’t think it’s all that similar to [name]Kaylee[/name].

[name]Audrey[/name] and [name]Aubrey[/name] are really similar though.

I think it really just depends on whether YOU like the sound of a name. It’s inevitable that at some point every child will have a classmate or peer with the same name as them, or a similar sounding name.

I wouldn’t provided they are both well established names. If it could end up looking like a unique creation of the more popular name in hopes of being cool I’d be very careful with that consideration.

I think that [name]Audrey[/name] and [name]Callie[/name] are both completely fine.

Not if they are totally different names. I would choose the one that was the least popular.
I wouldn’t use [name]Sophie[/name] because of [name]Sophia[/name] or [name]Isabelle[/name] because of [name]Isabella[/name] though.

If popularity was one of my top concerns, it might make me pause, especially if the names are very closely related or similar to each other. In the end, it wouldn’t stop me, not if it was a name I loved.

I’d only really stay away from popular names. [name]Aubrey[/name]/[name]Audrey[/name] isn’t a good example for me because [name]Audrey[/name] is my grandmother’s name so I may use it anyway! Although, [name]Aubrey[/name] isn’t very popular in Australia (here, [name]Audrey[/name] is the more popular name). I love [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name], but they’re kind of off-limits because of their popularity, too (again, [name]Sophie[/name] is more popular than [name]Sophia[/name] in Australia).

Hmmm.
I don’t have any names that I love that line up with really popular names. I do love [name]Clover[/name], [name]Claudia[/name], [name]Claudette[/name] & [name]Claudine[/name] which are a bit like [name]Chloe[/name], but that doesn’t bother me.

For me [name]Audrey[/name] feels miles from [name]Aubrey[/name] cause of the Hepburn connection. [name]Callie[/name] does feel closer to [name]Kaylee[/name] & the like for me…in my mind all of those names blur together. [name]Calliope[/name] feels more distinct and I do love it!

It depends on whether the names belong to a popular cluster. I love [name]Isobel[/name] but wouldn’t use it b/c of the combined popularity of [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Isabel[/name] etc. The same applies to [name]Eva[/name] with all the [name]Ava[/name]'s, [name]Evie[/name]'s and [name]Evelyn[/name]'s running around.
I would use [name]Thea[/name] even though [name]Theo[/name] is growing in popularity, and [name]Audrey[/name] even with [name]Aubrey[/name] (although I’m in Australia so [name]Audrey[/name]'s the popular name!). I can’t think of any other examples!

I kept [name]Isabel[/name] off my list because [name]Isabella[/name] is so popular though [name]Isabelle[/name] feels almost more popular in my area anyway.

Yup. Totally. My SO wanted to use the mn [name]Isabel[/name] for our first, but I was not having it at all since it is so similar to [name]Isabella[/name]. I was very specific in my guidelines. No top 50 or anything that sounds too close to them. I’m just a stickler I guess…
