Do you think Charlotte will be seen as outdated in 20 years?

Could [name]Charlotte[/name]'s be the next [name]Melissa[/name]'s,[name]Ashley[/name]'s,[name]Jennifer[/name]'s or do you think that it it timless? I’ve been considering this name, and I really don’t want to name my daughter something that could later on be seen as outdated. It’s #27 on the popularity list,so it’s not as popular as [name]Isabella[/name],[name]Sophia[/name],etc. Thanks!

No, I don’t think so. [name]Charlotte[/name] has been around for years and I think it’s one of those names that has a timeless quality to it. There isn’t anything about it that makes it particularly trendy nor does it seem particularly relevant to any specific time period. I think it’s a name that has the same qualities as [name]Kate[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Emily[/name], [name]Abigail[/name], [name]Audrey[/name]… that makes those names timeless.

No, I think [name]Charlotte[/name] is a classic. It might be experiencing an upsurge in popularity right now, but like sadlola said, it’s just like [name]Sarah[/name] or [name]Emily[/name] – always usable and relevant, whether popular or not. Go for it!

No way. [name]Charlotte[/name] is definitely timeless and classic.

No, [name]Charlotte[/name] is a classic with lots of history.

Absolutely not! [name]Charlotte[/name] has been used for years and years! E.M [name]Forster[/name] used in in 1908, and so have other authors and parents in the years since. As strawberry shortcake said, it’s classic with lots of history. Not trendee or a fad.

I dont think its the next [name]Jennifer[/name] at all, if anything, I would compare it to names like [name]Rebecca[/name] or [name]Sarah[/name] that may have been more popular at a certain time, but tend toward the classic.

Never! [name]Charlotte[/name] is a timeless classic. I see it more like [name]Elizabeth[/name], which has been perennially popular, or like [name]Sarah[/name], which spiked in the 80s, but it still is really popular and feels quite classic. I don’t think it’ll ever be like [name]Jessica[/name], [name]Ashley[/name], or [name]Jennifer[/name]… They’re nowhere near as timeless as [name]Charlotte[/name] is.

Another vote for timeless classic.

[name]Charlotte[/name] is a classic and therefore doesn’t fit with the Jennifers and Ashleys of this world. Yes, it has been popular recently and yes one may be able to date a [name]Charlotte[/name] baby to around 2012 BUT it is not a name to steer clear of it is simply a fabulous classic that any child would be happy to own. Go for it!

rollo

In the UK, I’d say it’s already become/is becoming dated (although not as much as [name]Jennifer[/name], more like [name]Rebecca[/name], [name]Sarah[/name], [name]Anne[/name]). I would not call it ‘timeless’.

I agree that [name]Charlotte[/name] is more like [name]Sarah[/name], [name]Rebecca[/name], [name]Emily[/name] or [name]Rachel[/name] - it has its peaks and valleys, but it’s always around. I wouldn’t quite put it at the level of [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Mary[/name], [name]Catherine[/name] or [name]Jane[/name] (even though some of those are far less popular right now) but it’s close. Right now, if I see someone named [name]Rachel[/name] I assume they’re probably born in the 80s/90s, but it doesn’t sound odd on an infant whereas, [name]IMO[/name], names like [name]Tiffany[/name] or [name]Deborah[/name] still are heavily identified with their era of popularity. [name]Charlotte[/name] will probably give a slight assumption that the child was born in this time period, but nothing more.

[name]Hi[/name] there, I hope i didn’t start your worry, as I posted this thought yesterday in another thread. I completely agree that [name]Charlotte[/name] is a traditional, beautiful and timeless name…but I personally think, and I’m by no means an expert, that vintage names have become very, very trendy…so even if you have always been a traditionalist, right now, everyone else is joining in on the “Traditional” bandwagon. 15 years ago, the majority of people were not naming their children, [name]Betty[/name], [name]Ester[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Ella[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], and those names would have stood out as different, maybe funky, but still different…(at least where I am from these names have not been used much and felt grandma-ish…I still remember “[name]Golden[/name] Girls” with [name]Rose[/name], [name]Blanche[/name], [name]Sophia[/name],…now those names are the names people are choosing for their children)

I had only ever known one [name]Charlotte[/name], who is now 18 and lives in the UK…I’ve lived across [name]Canada[/name] and worked in childcare for 15 years…maybe it has always been more common in the US? But, in the last 5 years, I have come across at least 5 personally who are under 5 years old. In fact, I know two “[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Avery[/name] …'s” and their parents didn’t even know that [name]Avery[/name] was also a character from [name]Charlotte[/name]'s web, which proves to me that [name]Charlotte[/name] had become a more recent name choice and not one that they had loved since they were young. But, I guess it varies with where people live, for 2011, it was the #13 most popular name in my province.

I love it as well and think it’s a beautiful name…but unfortunately, I do think it will get overused (as different subsections begin to use it) and the parents ten years from now will groan and not use it for a while…but it will come back because it is timeless… That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use it if you love it. I have an “[name]Ella[/name]” and already people are groaning about the [name]Ella[/name], [name]Stella[/name], [name]Bella[/name], [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Gabriella[/name], trend…just as they do with the -den trend in boys, (cayden, brayden, aiden, etc.) A friend named [name]Shannon[/name] did a quiz on facebook awhile back on name originality, and her name was rated a “D” for the year she was born. It said, if she was born in 2010, her parents would have probably named her [name]Ella[/name]…enough said…the [name]Ella[/name]'s of today are the [name]Shannon[/name]'s of yesterday…and [name]Charlotte[/name] is right behind [name]Ella[/name] on the most popular list here…sorry! I know, it’s disappointing…
