Seems most names I like have some kind of issue. Some really minor, but enough to bug me. I like the name [name_u]Dakota[/name_u], but it feels both dated and the issue with the Native American thing. Also I know somebody with this name, and I just can’t shake the thought of them when I think about using this name. Not long ago I gave in and replaced it on my list with a name I think is the closet to it, [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] (both start with a similar Da/De sound, are 3 syllables, the end can be used as a nn, Kota/[name_f]Lilah[/name_f], Koti/[name_f]Lily[/name_f]). But now I’ve run into a problem with this one. The biblical thing, some religious people seem to really, really dislike this name for it. I’m having a hard time letting go, and it seems like it’s definitely rising in popularity fast with each year (this is a good thing for me), currently almost in the top 100, so I sort of think this means it’s a very acceptable name? [name_f]Every[/name_f] time I ask about it somewhere though there is always that one, two, or three comments referencing the bible, and that bothers me. what do you guys think?
You won’t be able to find a name that 100% of people like and do not have a problem with. If you are not religious, then [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] is only a character in a parable. It is not inappropriate to use, nor is the [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] of the Bible the only cultural reference for the name.
I wouldn’t worry about it. I think [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] is really cute and there are plenty of them walking around. Of course there will always be some people who aren’t happy with names from the Bible that are “negative” but I wouldn’t even consider those people when naming your child. In the US there’s a famous syndicated radio show called [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], the host’s name, and she’s very religious and obviously has no problem being called [name_f]Delilah[/name_f].
I had no idea [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] was in the bible (goes to show how educated I am when it comes to religion). I would just research as much as you can and remember that you can’t please anyone.
Not christian so I dont have the religion association with it. But I am welsh so have the [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_m]Jones[/name_m] association instead. However the name is still on my list because I like it. If you and your partner likes it, dont worry.
I hear you. It’s an oldie but a goodie and not for everybody but how about [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]? Good nickname options, Lo / [name_f]Lola[/name_f] / [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and more I think
Definitely use [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] over [name_u]Dakota[/name_u]. Yes, I think of the Biblical [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], but it’s still a lovely name. I find [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] to be both dated and tacky.
