I am really liking the name [name]Ellis[/name], for a boy. It is not common and it sounds pretty good with our daughter’s name. When I search the name, I often see it for a girl. Unisex names are fine but I just wanted to see what you all think.
Also, what comes to mind when you hear this name? Our daughter has a vintage-y name.
I certainly feel like it is androgynous just by the sound and look of the name [name]Ellis[/name]. I honestly feel it could either be boy or girl and unless the middle name was definitely very masculine or femme, I would question the gender. I love it for either but lean more towards using it as a girl’s middle name. [name]Love[/name] the name though.
I would assume [name]Ellis[/name] was a boy, but it does seem somewhat unisex. It has an old-fashioned feel to me. Probably because it makes me think of [name]Emily[/name] Brontë and immigrants arriving on [name]Ellis[/name] Island around the turn of the 20th century.
I’ve never heard of or known an [name]Ellis[/name] and its the first name that I have really felt connected to and excited about. I will find out what I am having this week and I have a strong feeling it is a boy.
Any other thoughts of what you think of when you hear the name?
Someone said strong and handsome. Anything else? Thank you all for your opinions!
It does have a softer sound like [name]Elliot[/name], and it has some similarities with [name]Alice[/name]/[name]Allison[/name]. It definitely is masculine to me, but it’s certainly not a hard and tough name like [name]Drake[/name] or [name]Max[/name]
Reminds me first of [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Ellison[/name] the writer.
I personally like [name]Ellis[/name] and think of it as a boy’s name. It may work for either gender, though the only female [name]Ellis[/name] I’ve ever heard of was [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Grey[/name]'s mom on [name]Grey[/name]'s Anatomy and that’s not even a real person. Anyway, with a definitive masculine middle name, I think it would be an awesome name. If my husband liked it, we would consider it for our son.
[name]Ellis[/name] is my surname and, with an Australian accent, I (along with everyone else I know) tend to pronounce it the exact same way as [name]Alice[/name], which I have learned is not the case in other countries - so to me, [name]Ellis[/name] is quite androgynous as it looks masculine, but sounds feminine to my ears…though I have no doubt that it couldn’t work perfectly for a boy - it does conjure up the strong and handsome image for me too.
The thing is, how often do you use a middle name, ya know? I think the first name is more important than the entire name together. But either way, have any ideas for middle names? My daughter is [name]Camille[/name] [name]Elise[/name] if that helps at all.
Oh wow I’ve never even contemplated the idea of anyone using [name]Ellis[/name] on a girl. That was probably an error on my part, since it starts with ‘[name]El[/name]’ (because [name]Ellie[/name]/[name]Elle[/name]/[name]Ella[/name]! = all the rage) and is a surname, making it an obvious choice to start in on co-opting. Nevertheless, it sounds in no way feminine to me, and it looks like [name]Ellis[/name] is low on the hierarchy of names-to-be-flipped, since the only time it was in the girls’ top 1000 was in 1883.
It’s a little vintage to me, and a little bit country. The latter thing usually puts me off, but it doesn’t really in this case. I get a similar vibe off of [name]Emmett[/name] and [name]Everett[/name]. [name]Ellis[/name] is a very orange name to me.
I view Ellis as masculine. Boys’ names with “s” endings are starting to trend, which I think will help detract from the popularity of “El” names for girls. With an older sister named Camille - a lovely, feminine name - I would not expect a sibling named Ellis to be a girl.
