When we chose [name]Virginia[/name]'s name, we planned to use the nickname [name]Ginny[/name], and we do. I would say she goes by [name]Ginny[/name] 80% of the time. Recently, however, her little preschool friends and teachers have started calling her [name]Gigi[/name], and it’s catching on at home, even though we don’t really like it.
My friend, however, planned to use the nickname [name]Tess[/name] for her daughter but it never really took root. Maybe in time it will, but so far she’s [name]Tessa[/name] all the time.
I deliberately chose a non-shortenable name for my son because I don’t like the short forms for many traditional boys names. However, we now call him Lukey frequently, which I think sounds really silly, but we just got into the habit.
My nephew is named [name]Luke[/name] as well. We call him [name]Luke[/name]-o pooke-o. It’s just a silly thing that we started when he was a baby. No one in my family has gone by the nickname that was intended. We just pick up what feels right.
We picked out my son’s name because we loved the nickname that we assumed we would call him by… But we NEVER call him that. We mostly use his full name or one of his dozens of random unofficial nicknames. Maybe when he’s school aged we’ll use the official nickname… Or maybe not! :-p
With [name]Elias[/name] we actually planned to stay AWAY from calling him [name]Eli[/name] but that’s what we call him mostly (along with brother)
With [name]Juliet[/name] my husband planned on calling her [name]Jules[/name], which he does on occasion but she’s usually Jujubee or lettie
and with [name]Helena[/name] we had always planned on calling her [name]Lena[/name] which we do, we hardly call her [name]Helena[/name].
Not a child but… when I got my pet rats and named them [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Leonidas[/name], Periwinkle and Archimedes I didn’t think we’d be calling them anything other than [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Leo[/name], [name]Perry[/name] and [name]Archie[/name].
[name]Ezra[/name] ended up being known as Ezzy or Ezwez, [name]Archie[/name] got [name]Arch[/name] and [name]Perry[/name] was P-winkle or Perrywinks.
It’s weird how nicknames develop. And thinking about it, I chose [name]Odette[/name] for my rabbit and ended up calling her Detty, Dets or Detsy even though those nicknames had never occurred to me at the time.
We named out first daughter [name]Evangeline[/name], and we stuck to calling her [name]Lina[/name] from day 1. Lately we’ve actually been considering getting her legal name changed from [name]Evangeline[/name] to [name]Lina[/name] because really to us and everyone else, her name is [name]Lina[/name], so [name]Evangeline[/name] is just sort of a hassle. I really love the name, and I like that it has so many nickname options, but it sort of seems like there’s not really a point to it in everyday situations.
For our second daughter we chose [name]Kyla[/name], so we didn’t have to deal with the nickname thing really.
Also on the subject, one of my best friends since childhood is named [name]Stephanie[/name]. As long as I have known her she’s gone by [name]Steph[/name], but one time her and her mother told me about how her parents had planned on calling her [name]Stevie[/name], like [name]Stevie[/name] Nicks, but it never stuck apparently.
We never really planned on giving our children nicknames as they sorta evolve over time. But my husband always thought that [name]Eliska[/name] would be nn [name]Ellie[/name] and so far she only goes by [name]Eliska[/name] (she is 11 now).
My son [name]Gabriel[/name] is almost always [name]Gabe[/name] and if not [name]Gabey[/name]. Its only when he in trouble that he gets [name]Gabriel[/name] or [name]Gabriel[/name] [name]Blake[/name]!
We always thought [name]Naomi[/name] would go by [name]Naomi[/name] and 90% of the time she does. However [name]Eliska[/name] has started calling her [name]Mimi[/name] for some unknown reason and its starting to catch on. I have always love the nn [name]Mimi[/name], so I love it!
As for the twins, [name]Scarlett[/name] has really got a nn. Sometimes we call her Starlett [name]Scarlett[/name] but thats longer than her original name. [name]Murphy[/name] however goes by Smurf, smurfy or Smurfy [name]Murphy[/name] by his older siblings. It kinda caught on because [name]Naomi[/name] can’t say [name]Murphy[/name] and when she tries it comes our as Smurf!
We don’t use either of our girls the nicknames we planned on! [name]Elizabeth[/name] was going to be [name]Lizzy[/name] but we call her Miss E. [name]Annabelle[/name] was going to be [name]Anna[/name] but always call her [name]Belle[/name] [name]Belle[/name]
My niece [name]Isabelle[/name] doesn’t have a nickname, she’s always called [name]Isabelle[/name] or we call her our Isabellie. But I think as she’ll grow older she will most likely develop the nickname [name]Izzy[/name] in school, even though I’m not a huge fan of [name]Izzy[/name].
No! My kids all had planned out nicknames from the beginning and none of them are used on a frequent enough basis to consider them actual nicknames. I think nicknames are something that can’t really be planned, they just happen and work or happen and don’t work.
We planned on calling my son [name]Tyler[/name], “[name]Ty[/name]” when he got older. Well, he’s twelve and I don’t think he’s ever been called [name]Ty[/name]. He’s just [name]Tyler[/name], it’s not long and there are no silly nicknames to go with. We call my daughter, [name]Cambry[/name], “[name]Bree[/name]” on occasion. Her friends tend to call her “[name]Cam[/name]” “[name]Cammie[/name]” and “[name]Bree[/name].” I really dislike [name]Cammie[/name]. [name]Asa[/name] and [name]Jett[/name] are practically impossible to make nicknames out of, but their siblings call them AJ when talking about both of them, because they’re twins and constantly together. [name]Teagan[/name] was going to be called “T” as a cute pet name, but if we use a nickname for her it’s “Teag.” [name]Ryder[/name] goes by “[name]Ry[/name]” about half of the time, it’s been catching on among friends, too. [name]Spencer[/name] goes by “[name]Spence[/name]” more than any of my other kids go by their nicknames. We never planned on calling him [name]Spence[/name], which I think is funny because is such a [name]Spence[/name]. Sometimes his sisters call him Spencie. [name]Adelyn[/name] is called [name]Addie[/name] by nearly everyone and I hate it. I never wanted her to become [name]Addie[/name], but it’s hard to kill the nickname once it has spread. Oh well.
My parents purposefully chose nicknames for my brother and I that could not be shortened as my grandpa has a habit of immediately calling you by its traditional nickname. My dad is 44 years old and is still [name]Robbie[/name] even though he’s never gone by it.
My half sister is frequently called Katydid and my fiance gets called Martini on a regular basis (about the same as he gets called [name]Marty[/name]).
When I was pregnant I was told I was having a girl, her name was going to be [name]Agatha[/name] nn [name]Aggie[/name]. [name]Percy[/name] or [name]Percival[/name] nn [name]Percy[/name] was our back up boys name. Well SURPRISE we ended up with a boy and when it came down to it [name]Percy[/name] didn’t fit him at all.
[name]Felix[/name] came out of no where. It wasn’t on our list at all so we didn’t have any nick name ideas.
Mostly he is [name]Felix[/name] or Flex. My sister sometimes calls him [name]Lex[/name] so I guess he has a few options for when he gets old enough and needs a nick name for sports teams etc.
No. We planned on using [name]Oak[/name] for our oldest son. We have never once called him [name]Oak[/name]. His name is [name]Oakley[/name], and we often call him “[name]Oakie[/name].”
Ahhh this scares me! I adore the nn [name]Rio[/name] and have a combo that I love that works with it and everything, but now it looks like the odds are against me.
We Picked a name we both loved and a nick name before DD was born, and she goes by her nick name 99% of the time. I have tried using her full name more often, but I forget. lol
We chose our son’s name - [name]Weston[/name] - because we loved the nn [name]WEST[/name] so much. It never happened. He’s a [name]Weston[/name]. And it’s funny. you can tell who are most involved of your friends… they call him [name]Weston[/name], while the ones who’ve not been around called him [name]West[/name]. Until we corrected them.
Most of our choices now also have nn. so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
Oh! And my brother only got called his nn by his friends - [name]Nate[/name], and was [name]Nathan[/name] for family.
My sister [name]Shannon[/name] was [name]Shanny[/name] as a baby, [name]Shanny[/name] to only my high school bff, and is once again Aunt [name]Shanny[/name] to my little boy.
I don’t have any nn. And my son has taken to calling my Aunt [name]Linda[/name] “[name]Linny[/name]” because my husband also has an Aunt [name]Linda[/name].
