Am I totally off base by associating [name]Daphne[/name] with Scooby Doo?
My husband didn’t even think of that reference. I was born in 1980 and watched Scooby Doo growing up and I would assume most of my friends probably did too. I really like the name…should I let that bother me?
I wouldn’t let the Scooby Doo reference bother you. I watched it growing up as well, but I don’t instantly think of the red headed cartoon. For some reason I think of flowers. It’s a name you really like, and should you use it, your daughter would be people’s first thought when they heard [name]Daphne[/name], not Scooby Doo.
My daughter is named [name]Daphne[/name], and though we did get the Scooby Doo thing occasionally when asking for opinions on the name, I don’t think anyone has mentioned it since she’s been born (she’s almost 3 now). Besides, what could they say? “[name]Daphne[/name]? Like Scooby Doo?” She was the attractive female of the bunch, I don’t see where there would be much teasing potential beyond acknowledging that there was a character in the show with the same name.
So yeah, I obviously don’t think it’s a big enough deal to rule the name out. I say go for it.
I do think that the association is there, but it’s pretty mild. When I saw “[name]Daphne[/name]” in the title of this thread I didn’t immediately picture [name]Daphne[/name] from Scooby Doo, and I grew up watching that show as well. I don’t think it’s a big enough deal to prevent you from using the name if you otherwise like it.
I do think of Scooby Doo (also “[name]Frasier[/name]” with the character [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Moon[/name]) but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. It’s no different from thinking of Disney when I hear [name]Jasmine[/name] or [name]Ariel[/name]. As another poster pointed out, [name]Daphne[/name] was the most attractive of the Scooby Doo gang and a good guy, so it’s a good mental picture. Unlike say [name]Ursula[/name], which brings to mind an old, unattractive witch.
I grew up watching it too, but I also knew of another [name]Daphne[/name] so that’s probably why.
I don’t think it’s worth being bothered, she wasn’t a negative character either.
i only watched scooby doo a little bit growing up but i didn’t even realize there was a daphne, thats how far in the back of my mind the show is. i saw somewhere in a naming book or forum that as long as the association is not super strong that it is not a problem bc soon after naming your daughter daphne that she would be the daphne in your life, not the daphne from scooby doo. for example there is a kids show with a pig named olivia - or zoe on sesame street but lots of people look past that and choose those names. if its not an ex boyfriend/girlfriend or the president or something then i don’t think you can worry about associations bc there would be no names left!
It’s my first association too. But I don’t think it should stop you from using it. I also grew up watching Scooby Doo aswell. [name]Daphne[/name] is such a beautiful name and a great character too.
I too think of Scooby Doo when I hear this name but like others have said, it’s not a bad thing. I just personally dislike the sound of [name]Daphne[/name].
