Does Atticus need a NN?

I love the name [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] for a boy - it’s absolutely inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird, and it has significance to my classics-obsessed DBF as well. My cousin recently had a baby girl, which has led me to ponder over names even more than I was before, and I was discussing my current favorites with my mother today - [name_f]Filomena[/name_f] (after my grandmother) for a girl and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] for a boy. My mother’s first response was “What would you call [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]?” Meaning what nickname would we give him. My sister and I both have easily shortened names ([name_u]Courtney[/name_u] and [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f]), so I’m not surprised she was curious about it. But I honestly didn’t have an answer other than “[name_m]Atticus[/name_m].”

What do you guys think - does [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] need a nn? If so, what would you go with? I love the name, so it seems a shame to shorten it…but you guys always have the best insight so I’m curious to know what your opinions are!

I love [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] on its own. It’s a really cute name that I think would work perfectly on a grown man too.

I don’t think it needs a nickname at all!

But [name_f]Atty[/name_f] seems the most intuitive. I’ve also seen [name_m]Ace[/name_m] as a suggested nn too but that seems like a pretty big stretch to me. And stylistically it seems off as well.

For general, everyday use it doesn’t need a nickname imo but I’m sure one will develop naturally over time, even if just for use by family/close friends.

I don’t think so. I would tell your mother that [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] has been rising in popularity (it’s currently at #410 and has been going straight up since 2004) and that, though it isn’t yet common, it will be a more normal name in your son’s generation than she might expect. I don’t think that a three syllable name requires a nickname at all.

If she needs a nickname, I think [name_f]Atty[/name_f] is the most intuitive one. I also like [name_u]Kit[/name_u] for [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], though that’s a bit more of a stretch.

I know a no-nickname [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]. I don’t think it needs one.

As a preschool teacher I know that we shorten all names and he’d most likely get called [name_f]Atty[/name_f] quite a bit. Which looks odd written but is cute aloud. I think [name_m]Ace[/name_m] would be really cute, especially if you had a [name_f]Fia[/name_f]. [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_f]Filomena[/name_f] nn [name_m]Ace[/name_m] and [name_f]Fia[/name_f] is darling to me. Yeah, if I had an [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] I’d call him [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_f]Atty[/name_f] and [name_m]Ace[/name_m] interchangeably.

I like [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] with no nickname. However, if you wish to give him a nickname, then my favourite is [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. At first, I thought it was a bit of a stretch, but if you think about it, it’s quite intuitive. [name_f]Love[/name_f] your other name choices too, especially [name_f]Filomena[/name_f], [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_m]Roman[/name_m].

I love [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and he definitely does not need a nickname. Our kids have always gone by their full names. It’s a great name and I would leave it full for sure!

I don’t hear an organic nickname for [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], but he probably would get one anyways. I think that name is a touch too long for little kids to grab on to. I think [name_m]Ace[/name_m] is a great nickname for [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]! The only reason I don’t prefer [name_f]Atty[/name_f] as a nickname is it reminds me too much of “batty”, then you might have a “batty atty” and things could get less then favorable…

I really like [name_f]Atty[/name_f] as a nn for [name_m]Atticus[/name_m].
While it’s the most obvious it also has the distinction of not being used much or being common so it doesn’t matter.
I understand who it could be used to tease a kid and it’s clearly a name that needs someone with a strong/resilient personality but as [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] also allows for [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_m]Ace[/name_m] etc as nn’s I wouldn’t allow that to turn me off.

I like [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] by itself. It seems difficult to find any nn’s for. These may be stretching it, but if you want a nn, then may you will like:
(atticus plus his middle name may give you some hidden nn you haven’t thought of when combining the two)
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m] nn’s:
[name_m]Aric[/name_m]
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]
[name_m]Ace[/name_m]* sounds cool now that I think about it
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]

I like [name_f]Atty[/name_f] or [name_u]Kit[/name_u] the best. Great name

I saw on another website [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] as a possible nn. I feel like that might be a good option if people start insist on shortening it. Thank you guys for all the input!

You probably won’t like this, but Tick? My mother in law’s step father went exclusively by Tick even though his name was [name_m]Lester[/name_m], I have no idea why. Anyway, just throwing it out there.
