Does Auden sound too girly??

Husband and I like the name [name]Auden[/name] for our baby boy that’s due in [name]July[/name]. I’ve noticed it’s being used as either a boy or girl name. [name]Do[/name] you all think it sounds too girly? I’d hate for my son to have a girly sounding name and be made fun of. Also, does it sound too similar to the name [name]Adam[/name]? (My husbands name). I was worried the two names would blend. AND last, if we do go with this name… we’re looking for middle names… preferably starting with J. Thanks everyone!!

It doesn’t sound too “girly” to my ears at all. It makes me think of [name]Walden[/name] or [name]Alden[/name]. The closest I can get to a girlish name in my mind is maybe [name]Auburn[/name] which is still somewhat neutral. I think its an unusual/not often used male name which should be fine.

It does seem a little close to [name]Adam[/name] and other names like [name]Aidan[/name], but I think it’s different enough that it won’t get confusing. These similarities keep it possible for boys, in my opinion. I can see it working on girls (it’s a surname and really has no history of use as a first, so I consider it unisex), but I like it for a boy too. There are very few names I like on both genders, but I definitely think this works either way. I really like it!

Since W.H. [name]Auden[/name] was an Anglo-American male poet (real name: [name]Wystan[/name] [name]Hugh[/name]), [name]Auden[/name] is perfectly acceptable and usuable as a boys name. I quite like the strong sound ([name]Aud[/name]) mixed with softer sound (en). The name has never ranked in the top 1,000 for either boys or girls in the US so I don’t think you should worry about the unisex quality of the name. I’m not usually a fan of unisex names but this is one that appeals to me! If you and your DH like it, go for it! If you decide to choose it, pair it with something strong and masculine like [name]Auden[/name] [name]James[/name]. All the best!

[name]Mischa[/name] beat me to the association I have for [name]Auden[/name]. I like it too and am not a fan of unisex names either. I can usually draw a clear line in my head between masculine & feminine and [name]Auden[/name] falls firmly onto the masculine side. It is a softer sound but I see no need to worry, really.
[name]Auden[/name] [name]James[/name] comes to mind immediately but there’s also:
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Julius[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]John[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jeffrey[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jubal[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jacob[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jagger[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jameson[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]January[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Janus[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jeremy[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jedidiah[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jebediah[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jericho[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Joseph[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Josiah[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Jude[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Juniper[/name]
[name]Auden[/name] [name]Justice[/name]

Anything grab you?

Thank you for the feedback!! This helps a lot! I like a lot of the middle names that you listed… and I agree, pairing it with something masculine, like [name]James[/name] is exactly what we were thinking. We like [name]Jameson[/name] for a middle name & my husband just told me he likes the middle name [name]Jackson[/name]… I’ve got to think about this one a bit… I’m not so sure it will sound good with our last name, Pack. On a positive note, i do see light at the end of the tunnel!! haha… i’ve had the hardest time picking the perfect name for our little guy!

Re: [name]Jameson[/name] - I have seen some talk of that one trending to girls a bit. I know of at least one. [name]James[/name] might be better in that case with [name]Auden[/name]. I think [name]Jackson[/name] is fine though, right now anyway

ETA - Actually it may be [name]Jamison[/name] that I am thinking of, and that could be from the [name]Jamie[/name] part of the name. I can’t find any data on [name]Jameson[/name] too - but it could suffer from the same thinking.
