Does it clash with the others?

I’ve been thinking about which names from my favourites lists are actually names that I’d consider using, and I think I’ve come up with a short list for now. In alphabetical order:

[name]Eleanor[/name] ([name]Nora[/name])
[name]Eulalie[/name] (Lalie) yoo-[name]LAY[/name]-lee
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Lillian[/name] ([name]Lily[/name])
[name][name]Matilda[/name][/name] ([name]Milla[/name])
[name]Mirabel[/name] ([name]Mia[/name], [name]Belle[/name])
[name]Olive[/name]
[name]Pomeline[/name] ([name]Poppy[/name]) [name]POM[/name]-eh-LEEN
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]

and my boy favourites right now are [name]Elias[/name], [name][name]Jasper[/name][/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Noah[/name].

Another absolute favourite of mine is [name]Delilah[/name] ([name]Lilah[/name]). I love it in spite of (perhaps even slighty because of) what some would call its ‘stripperish’ quality. I’m not religious, but I’ve heard some Christians say she was a (for lack of a better word, no offence meant) “whore” in the Bible, and that seems to put quite a few people off.

It sounds a bit more modern than my other favourites, maybe a little less sweet. I’m wondering if that would mean it would sound odd in a sibling set with my other names? I know that’s something that shouldn’t be worried about too much because they won’t be together forever, but I have a compulsive urge to make sure my future set doesn’t sound too off. I don’t plan on having more than one girl, but there’s every chance that I might get broody and change my mind at some point!

So, could you imagine [name]Delilah[/name] as a sister to any of those? Or is it just too “edgy” to work alongside them? Are there any names similar to the above that might work with [name]Delilah[/name]?

I’ve put potential nicknames in brackets because I know a lot of people think that whether the nicknames match is more important than whether the full firsts do.

N.B. Some of those names would never be used with each other (such as [name]Ivy[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]), and some would never be used with [name]Delilah[/name] (such as [name]Lillian[/name] “[name]Lily[/name]”). They’re just all there to give you a feel of what my childrens’ names might be like.

I really like [name]Delilah[/name]. Whether you’re religious or not, it might help you to read the story of [name]Samson[/name] and [name]Delilah[/name] ( Judges 16 NIV - Samson and Delilah - One day Samson - Bible Gateway ) to understand the cultural reference to her character and why some people percieve her the way they do. She was NOT a prostitute – that is a different unnamed woman in the beginning of the passage. (Personally, I think the flawed individual in the story was [name]Samson[/name], but this is not the place for that discussion. )

I think it fits just fine with your other names. I don’t find it to be edgy at all – I think it’s vintage, charming and just unusual enough to be fun to grow up with.

I see [name]Delilah[/name] as just as sweet and old fashioned as the others. My great-great-great-great grandmother was named [name]Delilah[/name], as was one of her granddaughters (called Dill.) The name was actually rather popular with the Puritans, oddly enough.

Thanks for the link, I’ll have a read  Would be nice to know what all the “fuss” is about. I’m glad you both see it as sweet, I’ve always worried that the slightly harsh sounds would give it an “edge” that my other names don’t have. But it seems that is not the case
