[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] is our top boy name but we are having a girl…my husband has told me he also likes it for a girl…does it work?? [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] is our girl middle name choice but that doesn’t sound good at all lol so middle name suggestions are appreciated too
[name_f]Brooklynn[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f] and [name_u]Kayden[/name_u] [name_m]Gage[/name_m] are our kids names so no suggestions of those obviously lol thanks!!
Hmm I love boy names on girls but [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] is a hard one for me. I think with a feminine middle name it could work. I love [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] feels totally unisex to me, so I feel like it could work for either gender. [name_f]Brooklynn[/name_f], [name_u]Kayden[/name_u] and [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] go really well together as a sibset, though they all end in the “in” sound which might be a consideration if you want more children- do you love any other names with that ending, or would you break the pattern?
I’m going to disagree with others by saying that I don’t think it works. If you’re going to pick a boy name for a girl (which, as a woman with a man’s name myself - I would never advise doing), then I would say not to pick Dylan. And that’s because Dylan is a very popular boy name, and pretty much synonymous with masculinity in the same way that, say, Michael or Thomas is.
Having said all that, Dylan Lynn really doesn’t flow and, in the given sibset, Brooklynn, Kayden and Dylan sound like a pair of brothers and one sister, and I imagine that a lot of people would assume that as well. There’s also the slightly moral issue as to whether or not your daughter would actually appreciate having to wear such a standard boy name, but I’ll leave it with just that mention.
So my advice would be to pick an obviously feminine version of the name, e.g. - Dilys or Dylana, which sound much better with Lynn as a middle name, in my opinion, at least, and much better suited to a girl overall.
I think it’s hard to say [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] doesn’t work for a girl when it’s ranked #397 in the US, making it more popular than many traditionally feminine names. There were more girls born in the US last year named [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] than named [name_f]Zara[/name_f] or [name_f]Serena[/name_f] or [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], all of which would be considered 100% feminine. [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] does rank significantly higher for boys, but the fact that it’s as high as it is shows that it’s unisex.
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] just sounds super masculine to me, [name_m]Ive[/name_m] seen several Dylans on movies and books and tv shows and they were all male so I find it hard to imagine it on a girl
Sure, maybe it could work on a tomboy, but a girly girl named [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] just sounds off to me
I don’t like it and I think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] doesn’t flow well. [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] is not unisex imo. Sorry!
I would go with [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], it’s easier to say compared to [name_u]DyLAN[/name_u] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u].
I think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] totally works for a girl, and unisex names are really popular at the moment so I’ve found that most people have stopped assuming that a unisex name is for one gender or another. Of course there are exceptions to that rule, but I don’t think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] is one of them. I agree that [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] doesn’t flow very well though, so my suggestion would be to use a different, but still traditionally feminine mn such as:
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] really is unisex, but personally, not a fan for it as a female name. For a boy, love it, but it’s not one of my top names any more. There are just names I prefer, and [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] does seem very dated.
I think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] works really well on a girl, personally I know of a [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] who is very girly but has no problem with the fact that her name is unisex or seen as masculine by others - she knows she’s not.
On the other hand, [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] is awesome as a tomboy name; just think of [name_u]Drew[/name_u] Barrymore in [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]'s Angels!
It can work for any gender and personality I think, it’s a very universal name
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] could work on a girl but when it is suggested that you should pair it with a very feminine middle name, that really doesn’t make a difference, as she will only be known as [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] (Last name). In every day life we don’t know the middle names of people we are in contact with and I don’t even know the middle names of most of my friends, co-workers, or neighbours.
thx for the feedback and if you read my first post you’d see I said in it that obviously [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] isn’t gonna work so yeah lol but that’s what most of yall had to say which wasn’t very helpful…
I like [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]…our boy name was gonna be [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] so maybe [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] works for a girl?? Idk lol I just wanna use something we love that sounds good
We could also change the spelling if that helps with making it more girly like [name_f]Dillyn[/name_f] or something
Use what you love! No, spelling it [name_f]Dillyn[/name_f] or any other way wouldn’t make it more girly and would lead to a plethora of lifelong misspellings. Good luck
Yes! It 100% works for a girl. I know a little [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and she rocks it (and absolutely no one has ever made a fuss about it being a “boy” name!)
Honestly, if people think [name_f]Dilys[/name_f] will work but not [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] then I am at a loss. Very few people in the US are familiar with [name_f]Dilys[/name_f] (I wasn’t until I saw that suggestion!) and would be much more confused and unsure of gender by reading that than [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]. I mean, come on…
Since you love [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] but can’t use it with [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], what about:
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] – my fave!
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Emmalyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Eliana[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Elisa[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Emily[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] does not work for a girl. It’s a boy’s name regardless of how many girls are named [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], because it’s historically exclusively male.
