Does Lousia sound hispanic to you?

I’m currently loving [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], which I see as a less-seen classic. I think pretty, sophisticated, strong and love the reference to [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_u]Alcott[/name_u]. My grandma’s middle name was [name_u]Lou[/name_u] and I think this is perfect.

Husband thinks [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] sounds Hispanic, which is a problem because we are not Hispanic but people sometimes assume he is (which I don’t see at all, but it happens. Some Native American ancestry we think). He just wants to avoid confusion or looking like we are trying to be Hispanic, if that makes any sense at all, lol.

What do you think? Sibling name is [name_m]Daniel[/name_m].

No, it just sounds classic and international to me. Maybe if you spelled it [name_f]Luisa[/name_f] that would be a different story.

I think your husband is probably overthinking since he’s got his own issues with being identified as Hispanic

Thanks, yes it is a running joke so I’m sure he is over thinking it. Hoping to show him this thread and change his mind!

Unfortunately Hub’s sis agrees that it might sound too Hispanic…c’mon I need some back up here

I don’t think it sounds Hispanic at all.

Oliviasarah is right, [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is perfect.

If it were spelled [name_f]Luisa[/name_f], I would consider it more Hispanic.

I am Mexican and I dont associate the [name_u]Lou[/name_u] beginning with our culture.
I think [name_m]Luis[/name_m] is more common in our culture then [name_m]Louis[/name_m].

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] gives me more of a [name_m]French[/name_m]-Italian vibe, if anything.

Maybe [name_f]Louise[/name_f].
Maybe he just doesnt like the name.

It seems English more than anything- I think of a well-bred young ladies wearing bonnets with ribbons and long flowing dresses trimmed with lace, a country manor, high tea or tea parties with fine china and dainty little scones and desserts, balls and dances, going riding in the fields, things like that. Something that could be a scene out of a [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] novel.

The only [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] I ever knew was of Chinese descent though.

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] doesn’t feel hispanic to me at all.

Thanks everyone! Hopefully your unbiased insight will help when I show this to the hubby!

It reminds me of the Austrian [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] in The Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f]!

My name image for [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is European.

My association is “The Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f].”

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is the Anglicized version of [name_f]Louise[/name_f] ([name_m]French[/name_m] fem. of [name_m]Louis[/name_m], the name of many [name_m]French[/name_m] kings). [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] and [name_f]Luisa[/name_f] may be considered Hispanic, or more generally Latin (incl. Spanish/Italian/[name_m]French[/name_m]), but [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is quite English. I’d just pick a different name to avoid bringing up issues that could be interpreted as prejudicial.

Agreed. I don’t associate the name [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] with hispanic culture. It’s a name that has strong roots in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] / UK, and I’m pretty sure nearly every latin-based language has some variation of it – making it international more than anything. I think of [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_u]Alcott[/name_u].

Overall, I don’t hear the name [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] very much, among any ethnicity in my area – of which there is plenty of hispanic culture.

Thanks everyone, I get the same references so hopefully hubby will be able to consider it without his bias. He may not even like it after all, but at this point I really do and he is just too concerned about the possible Hispanic sound to consider it fully. I’m sure your answers will help!

Yeah, they’re my associations too.

I think your husband/sister in law are probably thinking of [name_f]Luisa[/name_f] which I believe is fairly popular in Spanish speaking countries.

If it still bothers him, these are some that feel or sound similar…
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
[name_f]Aloisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]

I know, it’s not a very common name… In the U.S. Or in Mexico.
I only new one [name_f]Luisa[/name_f] in grade school and she was [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Luisa[/name_f].
