Does Nicolet sound feminine?

[name_m]Nicolet[/name_m] (nik-oh-lay)

Basically what the title says. I live in [name_u]America[/name_u] and I fear if I considered this as a possible first that 1) my SO would think it sounded girly and 2) people would mispronounce it as [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f]. What do you guys think? [name_m]Worth[/name_m] it or nah?

I don’t think it’s unusable, but I definitely also assumed it was [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f] spelled differently at first glance. There’s definitely the possibility of that challenge here in the US, though I don’t think that it’s a dealbreaker and it is a lovely name.

I would spell it Nicolay

Spelling wise I defaulted pronouncing it [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f] and I think that would happen often as there are names like Violet/ [name_f]Violette[/name_f] and Juliet/ [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] taking off. The actual pronunciation actually still comes off feminine to me as it reminds me of [name_u]Nicola[/name_u] which is listed on NB as unisex but personally in [name_u]America[/name_u] I’ve only ever known this name on females… I think both of your concerns are valid and would pass.

I thought it was [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f]. Change the spelling I believe would be the better idea. Nicolay, Nicolae, Nicolaye. I think the Y’s make it look more manly.

I’m with the other berries on this one. It is a nice name, but it won’t be pronounced correctly in 99.9% of cases (outside of [name_f]France[/name_f], that is). A similiar alternative sound-wise would be [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m]. [name_m]Nicolet[/name_m] doesn’t sound feminine as much as it looks feminine because it’s only two letters away from [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f], which is definitely the more well-known name of the two.

I do really enjoy the sounds of [name_m]Nicolet[/name_m] but i do think people would confuse it with [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f]

As a name nerd I know its pronunciation and that it’s masculine, but I don’t think an average person would. It does look like a spelling of [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f]. Sorry!

I second what they all said! [name_f]May[/name_f] I add [name_m]Niklaus[/name_m] to the mix? klaus is a totally gp name of mine.

I love [name_m]Nicolet[/name_m]! I know it’s masculine but I’ve actually had it on my girls’ list. I know the pronunciation because there is a national forest called [name_m]Nicolet[/name_m] in Wisconsin. I do worry that people might mispronounce it, though. But you could say “it’s like the ending of ballet” and that might help?

Ooh that’s an adorable alternative! I do appreciate it!

Yes. It does to me. I’m not sure why it’s blue on NB as it doesn’t actually seem to have any usage as a first name.
I do like the name, but if you want the Nicolay pronunciation anyway, I would just spell it this way (even if it’s not technically pronounced this way originally), in an American context it would make more sense to me.

It seems feminine to me, and I think it’s actually a variant of [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f], not a male form. And it would be pronounced Nih-koh-let.
If you’re aiming for the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation the correct one would be nik-oh-leh and not nik-oh-lay.

Yes, and it sounds like Nicoret too.

Mispronouncing probability is high. It also reminds me a lot of nicotine gum to stop smoking :grimacing:.

it would probably be mispronounced but it doesn’t seem overly feminine to me. personally I am always a champion of hard-to-pronounce-but-I-love-them-anyway names so I am a big go for it on this one !!
