Does our name work? Dad unsure

We are struggling to find a name for our baby boy who is arriving shortly.

The family name is [name_m]Wells[/name_m] and my wife really likes [name_m]William[/name_m] and so do I. However, i’m really unsure if [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] (which his friends would inevitably shorten things too) works, frankly i feel like its almost a tongue twister.

The other name my wife likes is mine, [name_u]James[/name_u], but i’m not a fan of [name_m]Junior[/name_m] or big and little [name_u]James[/name_u], and don’t like [name_m]Jim[/name_m]. Plus my family already calls me [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], so that’s sort of out.

We clearly like classic names… I’d be grateful for any help!

I agree that [name_m]William[/name_m]/[name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is a little comic-book-like. If you’re sold on [name_m]William[/name_m] you can pick his nickname as [name_m]Liam[/name_m] or use [name_m]Liam[/name_m] as the first name. Instead of [name_u]James[/name_u] have you considered [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Jake[/name_m], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m]?

Some other classic name suggestions:
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_u]Michael[/name_u]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m]/[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Timothy[/name_m]
[name_m]Zachary[/name_m]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]

If you like [name_m]Jack[/name_m], that can conceivably be short for [name_u]James[/name_u]. Also [name_u]Jem[/name_u]. I agree [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] is too close, but if you were okay with [name_m]Liam[/name_m] or [name_u]Billy[/name_u] you could potentially offset that nickname. Have you considered [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_m]Charles[/name_m]? Those could be perfect fits for you and I think they sound very nice with your surname.

I think that [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] “[name_m]Will[/name_m]” wouldn’t be too bad, actually. I’ve heard worse (I know a [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m]). Since you guys like classic names, how about [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m]? [name_m]John[/name_m] allows you to get loosely similar to [name_u]James[/name_u] (at least by initial), is familiar but not super out-there, and lends to other nicknames, like [name_m]Jack[/name_m], if that is what you’d prefer. In any case, I think moving [name_m]William[/name_m] to the middle spot would solve the issue of your [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] concern.

I agree with the [name_m]Liam[/name_m] suggestion. It’s a nod at [name_m]William[/name_m], but goes better with [name_m]Wells[/name_m], so maybe it ticks the boxes? [name_m]Liam[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] sounds great. Let us know what you decide on. Good luck!

It’s quite similar, and can be a little bit of a tongue-twister, but I think it’s completely usable. Honestly, it’s surprising how little a first name and surname are used together and I don’t think its necessary for them to be perfectly flowing. [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] sounds great together - [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] sounds a little messy but is probably even less likely to be said together. I think loving the first name is most important, and if no other name is comparable then go for it! Though I agree with others - [name_m]Liam[/name_m] is a fantastic alternative if you like it!
Jblack11 mentioned some great classic names - A couple others I can think of would be [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] or [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]. Congrats and good luck

If you use [name_u]James[/name_u], maybe you could use JJ (short for [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m].) as a nickname?

Wanted to respond because we have a [name_m]Will[/name_m] and a [name_u]James[/name_u], so maybe I can suggest some others you might like. We also have a [name_m]Zach[/name_m] and a [name_m]George[/name_m].

Others:
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] (would sound nice w/ [name_m]Wells[/name_m])
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Allan[/name_m]
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]

Another option is to use [name_m]William[/name_m] and have him go by [name_m]William[/name_m] or a non-[name_m]Will[/name_m] nickname.

Good luck!

The suggestion of [name_m]Liam[/name_m] is great! [name_m]Liam[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] works much better than [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] in my opinion.

Some other classic names that you might like:

[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_u]Jameson[/name_u]
[name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]

I personally love the sound and look of [name_m]Albert[/name_m] [name_m]Wells[/name_m] and the nn [name_m]Albie[/name_m] is a really nice option.

Good luck!

thank you everyone for your input! Sounds like some like and some don’t which is like having the conversation with my wife and I! I will bounce some of these ideas off of her and see if we can agree on something for this poor little guy!

I like [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_u]James[/name_u], but I can see the problem with the last name. I’m personally not a big fan of [name_m]Liam[/name_m] - to me, it takes a great classic name and makes it sound a bit trendy.

There are many similar names that would go very nicely with [name_m]Wells[/name_m]. I’ll list some, but I really want to highlight the name [name_m]John[/name_m]. It is THE classic name, sounds great with [name_m]Wells[/name_m], has a charming simplicity and would be somewhat surprising on a baby today.

[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Richard[/name_m]
[name_m]Robert[/name_m]
[name_m]John[/name_m]
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_m]Timothy[/name_m]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]

[name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], and [name_m]Paul[/name_m] would also be good matches, but have their own problems with the surname [name_m]Wells[/name_m].
