I love [name_m]Richard[/name_m]! I’ve never thought of it as dated though- more of a handsome underused classic, like [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_u]Francis[/name_u] or [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. I would also use it in the middle spot but I’d love to start meeting more young [name_m]Richards[/name_m]
I was just thinking about [name_m]Richard[/name_m] the other day! It was my grandpa’s name. I like [name_m]Richard[/name_m] with the nickname [name_u]Ricky[/name_u] but with any other nickname, I don’t care for the name.
Handsome and underused! I love [name_m]Richard[/name_m]. It’s super kingly and dignified to me. Very handsome. Makes me think of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] the Lionheart.
[name_m]Richard[/name_m] has a nice sound actually, but [name_m]Rick[/name_m] and [name_m]Dick[/name_m] are pretty awful, imo. [name_m]Rich[/name_m]/[name_m]Richie[/name_m] is slightly better. But it’s not bad for a middle name.
As long the nickname “[name_m]Dick[/name_m]” is still hanging around, I’d avoid [name_m]Richard[/name_m] like the plague. That being said, I do find nn [name_m]Rich[/name_m] charming on the right person.
I’m surprised by the responses! Dantea, I completely agree about [name_m]Richard[/name_m] being kingly and dignified.
And yeah, I don’t like any of the nicknames. I would just stick to [name_m]Richard[/name_m].
[name_m]Richard[/name_m] dropped in popularity after [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Nixon[/name_m]'s resignation due to the Watergate scandal in the early 1970’s. It’s a classic name that is ready for revival. I think [name_m]Richard[/name_m] Armitage is a classy English gentleman so he’s helped me view the name in a new light. I like [name_m]Rico[/name_m] for a nickname or just [name_m]Richard[/name_m].
I hate [name_m]Richard[/name_m].
Okay, hate is too strong of a word but for me… no. Never, except as a middle name.
I have a friend named [name_m]Richard[/name_m], (25ish) and he’s the only one I’ve ever known to go by “[name_m]Richard[/name_m]” in full.
We have numerous [name_m]Richards[/name_m] at the company I work for, all go by [name_m]Rick[/name_m]/[name_m]Dick[/name_m]/ and one [name_m]Rich[/name_m].
I don’t see the appeal, though I do see it as a “classic”.
I just can’t understand the appeal of this name. I think was so overdone that it’s automatically dated, no matter how classic it is.
As well, it’s one of those names with a ton of nicknames, horrible nicknames. [name_m]Rick[/name_m], [name_m]Dick[/name_m], [name_m]Rich[/name_m], none of them are even remotely appealing. Because it has so many nicknames, it feels to me like it has to have a nickname. I’ve never known anyone who goes by the full [name_m]Richard[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] dad and cousin are both [name_m]Richards[/name_m] with no nickname. I like it
I think the -ard ending still feels heavy (though the Twilight boom of Edwards might help lighten it). That being said, any name with centuries of continuous use will feel dignified and strong.
The responses seem to be split evenly now. Any more feedback?
I personally think it’s awful… the nicknames, the sound of it, how it looks on paper. I just don’t see any appeal in the name at all, unfortunately. Personal feelings aside, I think it should stay on hiatus until people stop using [name_m]Dick[/name_m] as a slang term for… well, rude people and actual dicks. Which will probably not be for a long, long time.
This doesn’t in any way mean I dislike PEOPLE named [name_m]Richard[/name_m], I just don’t like the name itself. I’m sure there are lots of [name_m]Richards[/name_m] who are perfectly lovely people.
I actually do like [name_m]Richard[/name_m]. It was one of my husband’s favorites for a while during our battle of names for our son. It is more classic [name_f]IMO[/name_f] than dated. We had finally decided against it mid-term simply because there are too many others with a variation of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] between both our families. If not for that, we might have pondered [name_m]Richard[/name_m] as a mn.
I know a [name_m]Richard[/name_m], a [name_m]Rich[/name_m], a [name_u]Ricky[/name_u], and a handful of [name_m]Ricks[/name_m]. It really doesn’t appeal to me. The only positive association I have for it is [name_u]Ricky[/name_u] [name_m]Ricardo[/name_m] but that was short for [name_m]Enrique[/name_m].
I love [name_m]Richard[/name_m]! It’s a very handsome name. [name_f]My[/name_f] best friend’s boyfriend is a [name_m]Richard[/name_m], and I guess that makes it feel more current on a younger person. Confession: I secretly love [name_m]Dickie[/name_m] as a nickname for it, I think it’s the cutest thing. I could never bring myself to do it, though. [name_m]Rick[/name_m] and [name_u]Ricky[/name_u] are usable, but I don’t like them as much. [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] might also work, if it’s more your style.
