does this first/last name go?

Ok, I really like the name [name]Farrah[/name], due to the simplicity, the fact that it’s not common, and the meaning (happy, happiness).

Problem is my last name…[name]Carey[/name]. The name would be [name]Farrah[/name] [name]Carey[/name].
Now, my husbands sister is [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Carey[/name], and that doesn’t sound bad, so do you think [name]Farrah[/name] [name]Carey[/name] sounds bad?
Thank you!

It is a little bit rhyme-y, though I don’t think it sounds any worse than [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Carey[/name]. If you just look at vowel sounds it’s basically AEH-ah AEH-ee. If you absolutely love [name]Farrah[/name], I say go for it, but if you aren’t set on it, it seems like it would be worthwhile to keep looking, possibly for something with a different number of syllables or a two syllable name with emphasis on the last syllable. [name]Fariha[/name] is a related name that might work better, although it seems a little more ethnic (even though they have the same roots). Eija (pronounced AY-ya, apparently) also means happy in Finnish, whille Furaha means joy/happiness in Swahili. Meanwhile, I think names like [name]Frayda[/name] and [name]Freya[/name] have a similar sound, and the long AY sound at the start hides the repetitiveness.

[name]Farrah[/name] is a beautiful name but I know what you’re saying about the similar sounds. I think you can pull it off if you really love it though. One suggestion: what about [name]Phaedra[/name]? Kind of similar feel and still unique!

[name]Vera[/name]? F and V are very similar sounds and you can make it more like Vee-ra/[name]Veer[/name]-a than V-air-a. It means ‘faith’ and ‘true’ – not ‘happiness’ but great meanings. [name]Felice[/name]/[name]Felicia[/name]/[name]Felicity[/name] means ‘happiness’ and starts with F.

Also I think you can totally use [name]Farrah[/name] [name]Carey[/name], but I second it’s worth looking around to see if something works as well. If it doesn’t, you’re set : D!

Best wishes!

oh thank you guys! I actually do have other names on my list, but this is in the top 5 and I just wanted ya’ll’s opinion! As for some of the other suggestions, I like them, but we live on the beach and I’m looking for a more beachy, carefree feeling. So that knocks out [name]Vera[/name] and I just don’t get the same vibe from [name]Felicity[/name] as I do from [name]Farrah[/name].
But thank you so much for your help!

I had the same problem you did! I absolutely loved the name [name]Stella[/name], but our last name is [name]Fain[/name] so [name]Stella[/name] [name]Fain[/name] sounds like cellofane and my husband immediately said no. I was crushed and still to this day am dissapointed that we aren’t using it (we decided on [name]Penelope[/name] instead) BUT my theory is, how often are people going to say your daughters first and last name together? The first day of role call in school and on a business card when she’s older (to which she will be probably be married by then, and her last name will be different). She will mostly be known as “[name]Farrah[/name]”. Go with the name you love, which is obviously [name]Farrah[/name]. Give her a middle name that offsets the first and last name too, that may make you feel better. I hope that helps and good luck!

You are so right! I mean, the names aren’t that bad together, and the fact that, like you said, they won’t be said together all the time! Actually, the more I say them together, the more I like it!

I had a similar problem - my favorite name of all time is [name]Cara[/name], but I could not use it for my daughter because my own name is [name]Sarah[/name]! But as between a niece and aunt, i don’t think that should stop you. My issue was in having to say “hi I’m [name]Sarah[/name] and this is my daughter [name]Cara[/name]”. But presumably your sister in law won’t be facing this dilemna on any sort of regular basis.

As for [name]Farrah[/name], well, I am a child of the 70s, so [name]Farrah[/name] is all [name]Charlie[/name]'s Angels to me. In fact, and this is the truth, my birth name is [name]Sara[/name] but I changed it to [name]Sarah[/name] at age 8 because I wanted to be like [name]Farrah[/name], my idol!

BTW, I ended up naming my daughter [name]Laura[/name], but still regret not being able to use [name]Cara[/name] (which I was going to recommend for you until I noticed your last name).

What about [name]Bridget[/name] – that is a great beachy name.

I have to disagree with [name]Sarah[/name]–as an adult your daughter will be saying her first and last names together all. the. time. Think about it, every time you introduce yourself, every time you call someone and say this is [name]Jane[/name] [name]Smith[/name]… Keep count of the number of times you yourself say your first and last names together. At least I do.

BUT, [name]Farrah[/name] [name]Carey[/name] works just fine for me, it’s not rhyme-y at all. My last name ends with -er which has taken every name that ends in that sound off my list, much to my dismay.

^oh, I totally misread her original concern as being that [name]Farrah[/name] was too close to [name]Sarah[/name], not whether it went with her last name. Oops! I think [name]Farrah[/name] [name]Carey[/name] sounds fine.

As somebody whose husband (and daughter) are last named [name]King[/name], I completely agree that you have to consider how the first and last name sound together. We had to rule out SO MANY names on this basis

[name]Jo[/name] [name]King[/name]
[name]Paige[/name] [name]King[/name] (PKing is a place in [name]China[/name], not to mention [name]Paige[/name] [name]King[/name] sounds like a copy center)
anything ending in -ly ([name]Cecily[/name], etc.), because it sounds like Leaking.
anything ending in rey ([name]Audrey[/name] etc.), because it sounds like Reeking
etc, etc. etc
