I really like [name_u]Alto[/name_u], and have been contemplating on adding it to my list or not, but I wonder if it’s too musical or is it enough like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]/[name_m]Atticus[/name_m] to sound familiar as a name. So, I thought I would see what you berries think…
I am a choir singer myself and may be more inclined to see the musical connection than others, but when I hear the name [name_u]Alto[/name_u], I immediately think of the [name_u]Alto[/name_u] voice. I think it’s a beautiful connection and also a great sounding name, but I would use it for a girl rather than a boy. The [name_u]Alto[/name_u] voice is the lower female voice and thus sounds very feminine to me.
[name_m]How[/name_m] are you pronouncing it? [name_m]AL[/name_m]-to or ALL-to? The former sounds better to me as a name because the [name_m]Al[/name_m]- beginning is fairly familiar in male names - [name_m]Alan[/name_m], [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] etc. Also, there’s the chef [name_m]Aldo[/name_m] Zilli (sp?) who’s famous enough to make the similar-sounding [name_u]Alto[/name_u] (depends on your accent) workable. It’s not really my style but it’s not unusable, it’s got enough familiarity to it while still being unique.
Thanks for your input, ladies! I’m not musical (as far as singing goes, anyway) and pronounce it more like AL-to. Which is why I thought it might be a cute boy name, even if only in the middle spot.
@dottipanda Do you think that would really be a problem for a boy? It just doesn’t sound feminine to me, but like I said, I’m far from a vocalist. lol
Also, not sure if it makes a huge difference as to whether I could use it or not, but I live about 30 minutes away from a small town called Alto.
Well, to me it brings up the association of a female singer. But have you considered [name_m]Aldo[/name_m]? That sounds very similar and comes with a cool namesake: [name_m]Brad[/name_m] [name_m]Pitt[/name_m] as moustachioed [name_m]Aldo[/name_m] [name_f]Raine[/name_f] in Inglorious Basterds.
There’s also the traditional Scottish name [name_m]Sholto[/name_m] (Shawl-toe). I don’t know if that fits your requirements.
[name_u]Alto[/name_u] is a musical name, but not necessarily in a bad way. I think of the alto saxophone when I hear it. I would also suggest…
[name_u]August[/name_u] (or [name_m]Augustus[/name_m])
[name_u]Ashton[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_u]Auden[/name_u]
[name_m]Aristotle[/name_m] (this one’s a bit out there)
[name_u]Alton[/name_u] or [name_u]Alden[/name_u]
[name_m]Adler[/name_m]
[name_m]Achilles[/name_m] (also different)
Best wishes for you!
