Does this name/nickname combo work?

Okay, I think I’ve (finally) found a girl’s name I can love for baby #5. (We’re already 90% sure on a boy’s name) I haven’t run it by my hubby yet, but before I do, I have a question about a nickname.

The name I’m in love with is [name]Iona[/name]. It would probably either be:

[name]Iona[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name]

  • or-
[name]Iona[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name] ([name]Evelyn[/name] was a great aunt who was very dear to my mother, but I like the meaning and sound of [name]Evangeline[/name] better)

I am seriously considering my great-grandmother’s name for a nickname: [name]Nettie[/name].

She was just “[name]Nettie[/name]”. That side of my family is very French, but I generally dislike the -ette suffix that would typically be used to get there (particularly hate [name]Janette[/name]–the name of the lady who gives our phone number to all her bill collectors  ).

Is that nn too far of a reach? I’d really like to honor my great grandmother, but it’s more important to me to have a first name that I love.

Additionally, [name]Iona[/name] fits well with the rest of our children’s names, whereas a nickname name or a French sounding -ette name probably would not.

Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks in advance!

It’s a bit of a stretch, but I think it can work. What about [name]Iona[/name] [name]Yvette[/name]-- I think this could be used to honor [name]Evelyn[/name].

I agree that there should probably be a T in there somewhere in order for [name]Nettie[/name] to really “work” as a nickname, but I don’t personally feel like nicknames HAVE to have a connection to the legal name - so if you want [name]Nettie[/name], call her [name]Nettie[/name].
