I have recently started loving the name Aderyn, which means bird in Welsh. I think it would be a cool way to honor my great grandmother who was from [name]Wales[/name]. Her name was [name]Nona[/name], and I love that and would use it but my husband absolutely hates it. I worry Aderyn looks and sounds too trendy or made up even though it is a legitimate name with meaning. What do you think? Would it work with [name]Rowan[/name]?
Sorry but it looks very made up to me I think [name]Adelyn[/name] would be a much better alternative.
Doesn’t look made up to me, but I follow Welsh names a lot. [name]Love[/name] [name]Nona[/name]! Would he consider [name]Nina[/name]? That might be another way to hint at the name if it’s not too indirect for you. And there are so many great Welsh names. [name]Anwen[/name] comes to mind for you.
I agree it looks made up but since you know it’s a legit name, I’d say go ahead and use it and don’t worry about it. On the other hand, I love [name]Nona[/name]. Aderyn reminds me a little of [name]Adrianne[/name] too.
[name]Deryn[/name] is one of my favorites so I’m familiar with it. However Aderyn will seem made up because most are not familiar
I like it and don’t think it looks made up…also I love it with [name]Rowan[/name] which is my favorite name
[name]Rowan[/name] is gorgeous, and initially I liked Aderyn as well but then I realized it sounds similar to Adderall, or another medicines name.
I love the idea of honoring your grandmother but, unfortunately, it does look rather made-up to me. Also, I keep thinking “Adderall” which is definitely not a positive connotation.
I suggest going to these website:
BBC Wales - Living in Wales - Names
Welsh Baby Names - BabyNames.com
They seem very helpful and full of great names (I only gave them a brief look-over but already saw two I really liked: Arwyn and [name]Avalon[/name]).
The problem I’m having with Welsh names is that the ones I really like all end with -wen or -wyn and they sound too similar to [name]Rowan[/name]. I like [name]Alys[/name] (the Welsh version of [name]Alice[/name]) but it looks made up and trendy too because of the y. Stupid “yooneek” spellers have ruined all the legitimate names with y’s in them!
It looks a bit made up to me but if it is a real name then go for it. A friend was recently telling me that she knows someone that named their child [name]Ellery[/name] and thought it was made up - but it is a name that is a real name and i really like, so you can’t control everyone knowing the names you know - but it depends how much it would bother you if people think that or you have to explain it a lot. You may have to spell it a lot and it might get the nickname [name]Addy[/name] - but both of these are fine if you are ok with it.
I guess you can take the view it only looks made up because some people will not have see it before. I know a girl called [name]Deryn[/name] which is a shortened version and she has no problems at all …she gets called Ryn as a nn. Good luck.
I think Berries are often better informed on names than the general public. I am aware that Aderyn is a real, Welsh name, and I know how to pronounce it. Others might think you’ve made it up (since names starting in “[name]Ad[/name]” and/or ending in “yn” are rather trendy these days) or they might be unsure as to its pronunciation.
However, YOU know it’s a real name and it has meaning to you. Therefore, in my opinion, the only real issue is whether or not most people in your life/area would know how to say it.
No it doesn’t look made up. I think it sounds great with [name]Rowan[/name] too
Who cares what other people think? You love it and that’s what’s important. I think it’s a lovely name
I think Aderyn is cute even though it reminds me of “Aderall”. All names were made up at one point but no this doesn’t look “made up” to me. I think it would go great with [name]Rowan[/name]
Aderyn sounds cool to me, especially when paired with [name]Rowan[/name]. Go for it!
I would have never even thought of it sounding like Adderall… Isn’t it pronounced more like A-deryn, with the A sound being prominent? [name]Deryn[/name] is pronounced like [name]Darren[/name] almost right? I guess I need a Welsh speakers help…
And even if it is pronounced with the [name]Ad[/name] sound at the beginning, why wouldn’t other names that start with [name]Ad[/name] remind you of Adderall? The -deryn ending doesn’t sound anything like -erall. Why wouldn’t [name]Adelaide[/name] remind you of Adderall too?
@rowangreeneyes I’m Welsh waves
Aderyn is pronounced [name]Ah[/name]-deh-ryn so you’re right the A part is most prominent.
[name]Deryn[/name] is pronounced Deh-ryn
I prefer Aderyn to [name]Deryn[/name] personally, but both are lovely names. I don’t get the “aderall” thing at all either. I find it funny that on here so many people are all over Irish names but completely don’t get Welsh names!
Thanks! I had a feeling I was pronouncing it right, I have been around people with Welsh accents. I don’t get the Irish name thing either, Irish names are [name]WAY[/name] harder to pronounce than Welsh names in my opinion. Maybe because there are more people with Irish backgrounds in [name]America[/name] than Welsh? So it’s sort of less foreign to the ear. Especially if you’re from a city like New [name]York[/name] or [name]Boston[/name].
