so my recent obsession for a little girl is the name rhodes. it’s a family name for me; it was my great grandma’s maiden name. i’ve always had it on my list for a boy, but lately i’ve been thinking it would be a sweet honor for her and another grandma named rose on a little girl!
i’m asking your opinions and ideas!
do you think a little girl named rhodes would raise too many eyebrows?
what middle names do you think work well with rhodes? i’m really fond of rhodes magnolia but i want to see what else is out there.
do any sibsets come to mind with a sister named rhodes? i’m really liking calloway bear for a brother, but thatcher, alcott, bellamy, ever, shepherd, winslet, fifer, or remi are on my list, as well.
I think [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] can work for a girl. It’s not far off from [name_f]Rose[/name_f], which COULD work in its favor, but I do think it will be misheard as [name_f]Rose[/name_f] regularly.
For sibling names, I think unisex surnames would be most cohesive for sisters (something like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would make the set sound like [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] is a boy), and something pretty traditionally masculine for a boy (for instance, William), again, to make it clear who’s who. Those are my suggestions if gender clarity is important to you. I know it’s not to some. Most of the names you mentioned liking for a boy (I like them, too) are exactly the same style as [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u], in my mind, and would confuse me as to who’s who if I was meeting a family with those names, or seeing them written. Is [name_u]Fifer[/name_u] the girl and [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] the boy? That would be my assumption. Again, this doesn’t bother everybody, but if it would bother you, it’s worth considering.
[name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] would also make an amazing middle name for a girl, if your girl style tends to be a bit more like [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. I wish I had a middle like [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u]!
You mentioned wanting suggestions, so I’ll throw some up here.
Middles for [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u], or other girl names that would be cool with middle name [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u]:
Adeline/Addy
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_m]Joley[/name_m]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Landrie[/name_f]
[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
Brother names, or gender-specific middles:
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u] (less specific these days, but cohesive with Rhodes)
[name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]William[/name_u]
I think it would work for a girl! Most surname-y names feel unisex to me. I do think it would get misheard for [name_f]Rose[/name_f] occasionally, but not enough to become too frustrating.
[name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is lovely! A few more ideas could be [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f], or [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] Ellabeth.
I like your ideas for siblings. I would also suggest…
[name_f]April[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_u]Billy[/name_u]
[name_u]Thayer[/name_u]
[name_u]Tatum[/name_u]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_u]Sasha[/name_u]
[name_u]Carson[/name_u]
[name_u]Gardner[/name_u]
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_u]Walker[/name_u]
So I don’t like the name [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] for any gender. It makes me think of [name_u]Cecil[/name_u] [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] who was a terrible person and is sometimes referenced in dogwhistles by current white supremacists. I know lots of people here that just like the sound of the name I don’t think anyone is using it that way, but it brings up negative connotations.
I think that’s really cute, especially because it honors your grandmother! I know a darling little girl named [name_u]Royce[/name_u] (in honor of her late grandfather of the same name) and I think that it’s so sweet, and she wears the name so well.
[name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is so beautiful! I’m all for it. I think a girl could absolutely rock that name!! xx
It sounds more masculine to me, but, given the popularity of surnames for both genders, I think it could work on a girl. I agree that with potential brother names, I would assume [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] is a boy, BUT not sure how huge a deal this is. Like, how often are people going to be first introduced to your kids through seeing a list of their names with no other context? Personally, I would want something more feminine for my own name, but I adore the idea of middle name [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] for her grandmothers!
I totally think [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] can work for a girl! Especially with the family connection and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] tie. I think it’s adorable.
[name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is perfect! I love the more feminine middle with the unisex first.
For siblings - [name_u]Calloway[/name_u] [name_m]Bear[/name_m] is spot on!!! I also like [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]!
@coupletoutofrhyme thank you for responding; i love your suggestions of rhodes lilia and rhodes aveline, and rhodes and fletcher make the cutest sibset!
@snowmaiden thank you for your input and for the middle name and sibset ideas. i love all of them, especially rhodes and watson.
Oh yaaay! I think [name_u]Rhodes[/name_u] and [name_u]Watson[/name_u] (for a brother or a sister, really, though I just adore these two extra for little ladies) pair especially well! X
