I love my bf’s name, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. I think it is a great classic, and I like the imagery of the apostle. I would not want to give my son a [name_m]Jr[/name_m]. name though, so I’ve grown to love [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]. I don’t like [name_m]Tim[/name_m] or [name_m]Timmy[/name_m] as a nn, so I went to [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. My bf isn’t a fan as of right now, but I think it’s great. It’s intuitive enough of a nn, and it’s a cool name to me as is. People might think his full name is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] if they only hear the nn, but that’s not a hard thing to correct when people mess up.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] wanting some external opinions :] so what do you think?
Btw, I am not pregnant, nor do I plan to be for a few years, but this is something I’ve liked for a while, so I don’t think it will change between now and then.
It’s been used as a full name before ([name_u]Bryce[/name_u] [name_u]Dallas[/name_u] [name_u]Howard[/name_u]'s son is named [name_u]Theo[/name_u]). Personally, I don’t like nickname names and would rather you named your son [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u], but that’s just my opinion. Some people are bound to assume his full name is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]; depends if that bothers you or not. Example: When I wrote our my wedding invitations, I assumed the longer versions of the names for people who went by nicknames. E.g. [name_m]William[/name_m] for [name_m]Bill[/name_m] and [name_m]Reginald[/name_m] for [name_m]Reg[/name_m]. They’re older so I think I was right. But similar things will probably happen to your son over his lifetime.
I think [name_u]Theo[/name_u] works for [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]. Your son might end up preferring [name_m]Tim[/name_m] or [name_m]Timmy[/name_m] though. If you really dislike [name_m]Tim[/name_m] or [name_m]Timmy[/name_m] you might want to rethink [name_m]Timothy[/name_m].
Works for me! FWIW, I think you can select any NN for any FN you want…especially if you like the NN but not the whole FN it’s derived from. I don’t like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] but like [name_u]Theo[/name_u] and don’t associate the two.
Things change when you’re pregnant, so give your guy some time here.
If you plan on calling him [name_u]Theo[/name_u] why not name him [name_u]Theo[/name_u]? I don’t understand wanting to use a certain nickname with an unrelated name. [name_u]Theo[/name_u] isn’t short for or anywhere close to [name_m]Timothy[/name_m]. If you don’t like [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] or [name_m]Timmy[/name_m] or [name_m]Tim[/name_m], don’t use it. If you don’t like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], don’t use it. If you like [name_u]Theo[/name_u], just name him [name_u]Theo[/name_u].
I don’t care for [name_u]Theo[/name_u] as a nickname for timothy.
