My husband’s name is [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] and our boy baby name idea is [name_m]Ian[/name_m]…do these sound bad together since they are so similar? I definitely wouldn’t use the combination for siblings but is it acceptable for father/son? Thanks for any input!
No, maybe just put emphasis on the Eth in [name_m]Ethan[/name_m], and the Ia in [name_m]Ian[/name_m], when talking to them. I think it’s cute that they sound close.
Too much for siblings, perhaps, but I think it would work for father/son! I mean, some people do Jrs so a similar-sounding name wouldn’t be bad. I’ve known people in my hometown who have done spinoffs of the father’s name for the first child: [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]'s daughter [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_m]Harlan[/name_m]'s daughter [name_u]Harley[/name_u], [name_u]Loren[/name_u]'s daughter [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_m]Eli[/name_m]'s son [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m] “[name_m]Jack[/name_m]”'s son [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_m]Adam[/name_m]'s son [name_u]Addison[/name_u], and so on.
They do sound really similar - definitely too similar for siblings and to me they’re in a grey area as to whether they’re too close for dad and son. [name_m]Just[/name_m] try calling them from another room in the house and seeing if [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] can tell when you’re calling his name and when you’re calling [name_m]Ian[/name_m]'s name. Neither of them would use both names out loud a lot, so it’s up to you I think.
I think father/son is fine! Maybe too much for siblings
I agree with everyone else that siblings [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] and [name_m]Ian[/name_m] would be too close, but father and son is fine. I like those names too.
Thanks for the replies everyone! It definitely makes me feel more confident in making that our boy name choice!
If you are hearing a sound similarity when you call out e.g. [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] -[name_m]Ian[/name_m], would it cause confusion at times? In my pronunciation it would which is sad, I love the names.
Then again people name their sons after the father.
We had cousins. [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] -3 generations -they seemed happy.
Husbands family just repeated [name_m]William[/name_m] each generation and resulted in either a nn or use of the 2nd name for the son.
I wouldn’t use [name_m]Ian[/name_m] but depends whether the issue would bother you- and how much you love [name_m]Ian[/name_m].
Yes like you’ve said. As father and son it works just fine. Lots of people name their sons after their father anyway. As siblings it would be too much.
