Does your name get shortened automatically?

Yes, they do.

It’s not great as I can barely tolerate my full name, let alone the nicknames that come with it.

My name is [name]Alexa[/name], and when I introduce myself, most people automatically shorten it to [name]Alex[/name], or [name]Al[/name] sometimes [name]Lexi[/name], none of which I like. So I tell them to call me [name]Allie[/name], some people just have to have a nickname. Generally I don’t mind, but I’m a very girly girl so [name]Alex[/name] and [name]Al[/name] don’t do it for me…

Only my mom and my eldest niece call me [name]Allie[/name]. I introduce myself as [name]Alison[/name], and that’s what the rest of the world calls me. I’m not much of a nickname person, so that suits me fine.

Absolutely.
I’ve never really “gone by” [name]Kimberly[/name], but I can imagine most people would automatically call me [name]Kim[/name]. I prefer it though so it doesn’t matter.

I’ve often wondered how weird or difficult it would be to change to [name]Kay[/name]…I’ve thought about it but never actually attempted it. Maybe as an old lady

My name is [name]Catalina[/name] and I do get called [name]Cat[/name] a lot. I don’t like it but I have learned to tolerate it.

I’m an [name]Emily[/name] who rarely gets called [name]Em[/name] except by a few people. I’m not really a fan of nicknames, so I only call myself by my full name.

My name is [name]Sarah[/name], so you would assume it wouldn’t be shortened or given a nickname but sometimes it’s inevitable.

My best friend called me [name]Sally[/name] until high school, and stopped because it confused people.
Everyone in my family calls me by my first and middle name together, or the initials. I almost never get called just [name]Sarah[/name] by them.

People automatically seem to nickname me based on my last name at first and if they get to know me better they use the nicknames my friends use; which are S or [name]Silver[/name].

My sister calls me Rah-rah, which written down seems horrible but I love it.

No. My name has an commonly known nickname, but most people don’t automatically assume to use it. I’m not sure why, but I don’t mind. I don’t think I’d like it if people I just met started calling me by my nickname. Maybe this is because only my close friends and family members use it. I think it would feel too personal.

My name is [name]Cora[/name], so it never really gets shortened. I have always been a bit envious of those with names that tend to have nickname possibilities.

Ugh, yes. My name is [name]Sabrina[/name] and people can’t help themselves… they instantly go to Sab (yes, like scab). I correct them so I usually end up as [name]Sabrina[/name] but people do act put out as though all those syllables are just a waste of energy.

I would never give my child a long first name unless it had a nickname that I loved.

Wow, this sounds almost exactly like my sister. She’s [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Sally[/name] and Rah-rah are the big two that she gets. And [name]Sarah[/name] is one of those names you would think would be un-nickname-able.

I’m a [name]Sophie[/name] and I get [name]Soph[/name] off so many people - literally the only people that use my full name are my family and teachers/lecturers. Friends, OH, even his family call me [name]Soph[/name] at times now too. I answer to both, and [name]Soph[/name] doesn’t bother me. I would never introduce myself as [name]Soph[/name] as I find it very informal but I never tell people not to call me it.

I’m [name]Hannah[/name] and I get Han, [name]Hans[/name] or [name]Hannie[/name] sometimes, but only from my friends. I’d never introduce myself with any of those and I would find it odd if anyone but my friends used them.

I have the opposite problem. Unless I specifically introduce myself as [name]Ren[/name] people will call me [name]Karen[/name], even if I say ‘I’m [name]Karen[/name] but I go by [name]Ren[/name].’ "-_-

Well my name is [name]Elizabeth[/name]… don’t think I need to continue! But I will go on… Yes it does!

I go by a variety of names [name]Liz[/name] mainly, but also [name]Lizzy[/name], [name]Lily[/name], E, [name]Lilibet[/name], [name]Betty[/name], [name]Beth[/name] (not keen on this one). Only my family call me [name]Elizabeth[/name].

My name is [name]Whitney[/name] and my sister is named [name]Brittany[/name] (haha, mom and dad -_-") and though those aren’t terribly long names and most people do call us by our full names, close friends and family and sometime workmates refer to us as [name]Whit[/name] or [name]Britt[/name] respectively.
Since our last name is Whitfield (more alliteration on my parents behalf), I sometimes get called Whitty-Whits. But that doesn’t happen often. Or if we’re in the same room, we might get called WhitBritt. like it’s one name. I don’t mind nicknames usually, but the last one is my least favorite since it’s said like we’re basically one person.

Like renrose, my name is involuntarily lengthened a lot of the time (I guess one syllable just isn’t enough for some people.) I don’t feel like much of a [name]Gwendolyn[/name], so I never introduce myself with my full name, and people often decide to call me [name]Gwyneth[/name] or [name]Guinevere[/name] as a sort of reverse nickname (I hate the first one and correct everyone, but I don’t mind the second at all, so I don’t bother.) The kids I’m counselor to at [name]Shakespeare[/name] camp have decided I’m [name]Gwen[/name]-gwen, and very occasionally I get called [name]Gwenny[/name] (another one I always correct.)

Well I am a [name]Marianne[/name] and occasionally get [name]Mari[/name], but I find that 90% of the time if I introduce myself as “[name]Marianne[/name]” that’s what I get called.

Very rarely. Thankfully my family know not to call me [name]Meg[/name] because I absolutely can’t stand it.

People always shorten [name]Jasmine[/name] to [name]Jazz[/name]. It doesn’t bother me if I know the person but if I just me them it really gets to me! I just told you my name is [name]Jasmine[/name] why do you insist on calling me something else! What annoys me more though is when people introduce me as [name]Jazz[/name] to someone, I always correct them but it never works.
