Dolores: Is it Useable?

Hello berries! I have a small dilemma; I like the name [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], especially with the nns and paired with mn [name_f]Bee[/name_f].

But I dislike the association it has, well mainly the one of the many nns: [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], not because of Japanese fashion, but because of the book with the same name. i despised the book full heartly, especially being triggered by it.

Anyways my main question is this; is [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] still useable, as long as I use Lola/Lori or [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and not [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], or as long as people don’t actually give [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] the nn [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] to her?

I actually love [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]! Definitely due up for a revival. I wouldn’t instinctively call her [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], so I think you’d be ok there. And [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is a fun nickname for her!

Ugh I love [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] too! [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] just doesn’t come naturally to me either honestly, so I personally think it’d be fine

I love [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], and I think it’s completely usable. [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] seems unlikely as a natural nickname as it’s not very intuitive (and I would question anyone who went to this nickname immediately tbh).

I’ve known several people named [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] and none of them went by [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]. In fact, that nn would never have occured to me.

It is usable and a nice name.

I don’t associate it so much with [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] and I doubt people would give her that nickname, for me the unusability of the name lies more in the awful [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character.

I am not a fan of [name_f]Delores[/name_f], not only because I’m not a fan of the sound of it, I can’t get over the [name_f]Delores[/name_f] Umbridge reference from [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].

I do think of the HP character but I still think it’s usable. I don’t think of [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] at all.

[name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is Dolorese with an extra e at the end, it was my grandmother’s name. Her siblings used to call her [name_f]Dot[/name_f] or [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]. I don’t associate [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] with the name at all, and I don’t think many people would make a connection to that book either. [name_f]Lola[/name_f] would be a super cute nickname!

I doubt anyone would ever shorten it to [name_f]Lolita[/name_f]. Totally fine imo!

Nabokov’s Lolita was written a long time ago and so while people will unmistakably recognize it if you named a daughter Lolita they are not going to conflate Dolores with the book. Personally, I see Dolores as being one of two things: a) elderly woman in a retirement home and b) Dolores Umbridge :face_vomiting:

The nickname Dolly or Lo would liven it up and make it more 21st century. Or you could opt for Delores (sometimes alternate spellings do what originals can’t) if the association between Dolores and Lolita is really too strong for you.

I will say though this may well be heavily influenced by your place of residence. In Arizona I wouldn’t dare name my girl Lolita (pretty as it is) but Dolores or Delores sure. Now I happen to have a Filipino aunt and according to her Lolita was a name she commonly saw growing up in The Philippines (as well as Imelda) so in certain parts of the world it might be a stylish choice

i think it’s fine - lolita is almost never called dolores in the book, and since it’s a double diminutive i don’t think it’s an obvious nickname unless you live in a predominantly hispanic community.

That’s true, since I live in AZ as well, and I know not to name my kid [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] as well. Thank you for the your thoughts. And I’ve actually forgotten about the character in HP, since the author, and some of the actors ruined the movie, is kind of not a deal breaker for me.

I like the name. [name_f]My[/name_f] first association is [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] O’Riordan, the singer from The Cranberries.

This is mine as well.

I also think of Evan Rachel Wood’s character in Westworld.

That’s where I actually first heard the name from, bc I didn’t begin to watch HP until like high school
